Forever obsessed with how close Rabbot is, but also the very visible distance that Jack puts there to keep himself safe, which consequently keeps Robby feeling safe because we're close but you don't fully know my heart you don't know the depths of my vulnerability (but I kind of want you to), and seeing in real time Jack realize how much space there actually is when Robby and Duke shake hands, hold for a second, and both let their fingers trail.

doing ten lines of jealous Robby who gets all pitiful and whiny instead of commanding and rough. who buries his face in Dennis's neck to hide little sniffles as he fucks into him, shaky and deep, whimpering isn't this good? please, I can make you feel good.. love you, den, love you, please.. tell me you're mine.. you are mine, right? all mine?
What made it all worse is it didn't even explode at work.
No, this fucked up body of his crashed through his normalcy during a quiet night with Robby. Jack had handed off with them about fourty minutes prior, and the two of them had gone to the supermarket with the intent of getting stuff for dinner. Maybe even snacks for work that they could take, quick and easy.
Dennis should have said no, his boyfriend would have accepted it, no real questions asked. Just, well, he'd had a long shift as it was and damn it, he wanted pasta, no matter the dull ache in his legs making itself known.
The two of them were his space to feel okay, like his body wasn't broken beyond repair, and no matter what Trinity had pointed out about his borrowed time here, that his boyfriend's were fucking attendings and obviously would figure it out-
Couldn't this stay? Just for a little longer? Couldn't he get Robby's tea for him on still warm nights after work, letting the older man rest just to see the appreciation swimming in honey brown eyes? Why the hell couldn't he shower with Jack, standing between his thighs while the other sat on his shower stool. Steadily ignoring any pangs of jealousy when his back went numb from pain, and ultimately alleviated by huge warm hands trailing up and down his back in bed.
Apparently the day had come that the answer was a resounding no. His very own judgement day.
The cart's wheels squeaked between them, exhaustion lining both of their faces loosely.
Robby hummed, stilling to look over the different kinds of apple's avaliable. Even looking over at Dennis so he could ask "Did you like the granny smiths Jack bought? I know he likes them, but-
"Jack also loves sour," Den pointed out, his lips quirked up slightly "but no, not really, at least I like sweeter apples"
"Me too, I think the old man snoozes and loses in this case" Robby remarked, picking up a bag of much more brightly colored envy apples. Setting them in the cart and continuing to move through the produce.
"Says old man number two" Dennis teased, letting his eyes close once they stopped moving for a moment. Robby would be at least a minute here, checking the prices between the two bags of grapes and hopefully it would be enough time for his head to stop swimming.
"Hey sweetheart, you okay?"
"Mm?..oh, uh, tired" He managed, very pointedly ignoring the ice slipping down his back and the heat rising to the back of his neck. A cheap imitation of Robby's hand curling around him during work to steer him someplace.
Beside him, Mike made a sympathetic noise.
"I know baby, today was a long one, huh?" He murmured, leaning forward to press his lips to his forehead. Only to make Dennis privy to the way his lips downturned.
"Dennis are you sure you're okay? You're clammy"
" M'fine, s'just hot in here" He muttered, pulling himself back with a harsh swallow. Just managing to open his eyes in time to see the disbelief on Robby's face.
Ah, great, it was in fact not hot in here.
"Michael please, can we finish shopping?" Dennis's voice came out thinner then before, his chest clearly rising and falling slightly faster.
Robby didn't look happy about it, but he nodded nonetheless.
unfortunately for Dennis, going faster once it started to go downhill only made the ground come up that much faster to meet him.
Several more minutes in and he could feel the way the back of his scrubs and hair were wet with sweat, a nauseating mix of hot and cold swirling up and down him and an dizzying fog settling that made it so he didn't notice the increasingly concerned and fed up looks Mike was giving him.
Fuck ow, fuck ow, fuck-
He reached out for the cart handle and pressed his forehead hard against Robbys shoulder, quietly panting at the pain making his legs and hips feel weak. He couldn't help the thin whimper he gave over it, suddenly too out of it to think about much else.
"Den? Jesus, Dennis you're red baby, what?-"
"It's okay, just..just give me a second, please" He tried to reply, not catching Robby pulling out his phone or the quick set of texts he sent off.
"Here, come here, we're done, I promise come on" He muttered, pulling Dennis from the cart and into his side to support him.
The small whines and breathless little "ow"s under his breath his younger boyfriend kept giving broke his fucking heart, and only solidified his choice once they got back into the car to turn back towards the pitt
In the passenger seat, Dennis had tipped his head back, squeezing his eyes shut against the onslaught of spinning like he was in a dryer set on tumble dry.
"I know, I know baby, we're gonna go see Jack, okay?"
" What? No, no no, Robby, Michael it's okay" He begged, his head rolling to the side to look pleadingly at the other man.
The look he got in return was nothing short of incredulous.
"Dennis you're obviously sick, I felt your pulse getting you in the car, you're tachy right now" He argued
God this couldn't be happening today-
"Robby please, I promise it's okay, really, it's not new, I've dealt with it before and-"
"You've dealt with this before?"
Dennis winced at the sudden sharpness to his voice, far too unsteady not to slice himself open upon it's edge.
"Yes, look, I..I can explain at home, but-"
"Oh, oh no, you can explain at the ER Dennis"
Fuck.
Robby didn't even grant him chairs, instead all but picking him up to take him into the ambulance bay
The fog was beginning to clear, as was the heat from sitting in the car on the ride over. Leaving a different kind of fire burning beneath his skin, in the form of embaressment that only heightened when Jack met them at the door. A worried set to his jaw as he directed them to an empty room, the two of them immediately setting about getting his vitals and setting up both his pulse ox and pressure cuff.
"I don't think you're supposed to treat family," He tried to protest, grasping at straws at this point.
"We're two attendings, I'd fucking dare anyone to say anything to us right now" Jack muttered, both said attendings heads jerking up to look at the screen when his heartrate immediately began to scream.
Dennis closed his eyes tightly, finding kindhip with the at peace dog meme Trinity had sent him yesterday during lunch.
"Your heartrate is 140 fucking bpm" Robby hissed above him.
"Give it a second, it'll rest soon" He replied, suddenly finding the florescent lighting on the ceiling very fascinating.
Robby scoffed at his blaise attitude, standing up straight so he could pace the end of the room. On the other hand, Jack had straightened up to study him, something too akin to recognition lighting up in his gaze.
"..this isn't new to you, is it." It wasn't a question, but Dennis slowly shook his head anyways
"..No, it's not" he mumbled.
"How long? how long has this been going on? Better yet, how long have you been hiding this from us?" Mike huffed, his jaw winding tight and painful out of stress.
"You make it sound like I've been lying to you guys" He protested, a weak deflection from the real answer of 'too long'. All due to the fear of the follow up answer that he was terrified it'd always be like this now.
The bark of laughter that followed anyways was just as scary though.
"I mean, were you not?"
"Michael.." Jack tried, glancing over at his partner.
"No, no, do not." He snapped, but still came to a stop at the end of the bed. Pressing his lips together till they turned white before he asked "Okay. okay, how..when did this start? let's start there."
"In 2020, I uh, got really sick, I had to be hospitalized. It was pretty bad, and I just thought that I had to spend a while recovering afterwards but it.." He swallowed hard, not meeting either of their gazes right now.
"It just kept getting worse, over the next six years, and I never considered that something was really wrong until about roughly a year and a half ago, that I was..sick, and not just generally weak or, uhm, from being homeless" He explained, quiet beneath the beeping over his heartbeat that Jack ultimately silenced so he could speak.
Both men looked pained, if not sad.
"Baby, we could've helped" Robby began, straightening once more to drag a hand over his beard.
It was Dennis's turm to laugh incredulously, shaking his head before he replied "and done, what, exactly?"
"Helped with apointments, at home, you didn't have to deal with this alone Mouse" Jack murmured
"To what end? I mean, when, when is this over? what if it doesn't? Do I go from Capable Dr.Dennis Whitaker to someone who almost made it but ended up being nothing due to being sick" He spat, sitting up further in the bed.
"Mouse-"
"No! I have to push through it, there is no, 'you should take it easy', I'm a year one resident, I have a life, I got out with my best friend and my boyfriends and I..I'm finally getting to live, and I can't let pain or symptoms get in the way of that, I refuse."
Dennis's outburst hung in the air heavily, both of his partners sharing a silently devastated look between them before they sank back down in the chairs by their younger's bed.
"Den, no one's asking you to give up anything, we just want to help." Michael whispered, slipping his fingers into Dennis's free hand. "Baby..how long are you in pain normally? When does it start?"
Dennis glanced at their hands between them, his mouth twisting slightly with an apparent lack of answer.
"It..does have a start and stop, right?" Robby whispered, only to lean his head down between his arms and against the bed railing when Dennis shook his head.
"Dennis your life doesn't end just because you're disabled" Jack pointed out after another beat of heavy silence.
"I know it wouldn't, but I'm not, so it's..I'm just sick" He frowned
"Sweetpea, you've been sick for six years, increasingly getting worse symptoms, being sick like that is being disabled" He replied gently
"But I'm not- I don't need anything, for that, so- I don't want to take a label when I can still move and clean, and.." Dennis trailed off
"Am I able bodied Den?"
Dennis opened and closed his mouth, before ultimately shaking his head.
"Exactly, I'm disabled, but I still have a life, a pretty active one, right pup?" Jack gave him a small smile, claiming his other hand for himself.
"Yeah, I just.." He suddenly felt so tired, compounded by the flare from earlier- he swallowed thickly and managed to whisper "I just thought it would be different Jack"
Jack's smile turned a little sad, before he brought Dennis's hand up to his lips to plant a few warm kisses to his knuckles.
"I know treasure, i know" He murmured into his skin.
Dennis closed his eyes tightly for a moment, taking a big, shaky inhale and exhaling slowly.
"..I'm sorry I didn't say anything, most days I don't want to even think about it, much less have conversations about it." He explained
"Does Santos know?" Robby spoke up for the first time in a few minutes to ask
"Yes, she does" Dennis admited
"Good," he sighed, lifting his head to drag his gaze over Dennis's features and adding "I'm glad someone else did, I think it'd be worse to know you'd been alone thusfar."
"And now you definitely aren't, you have the rest of us in your corner baby" Jack murmured, reaching out to tuck a brown curl back around his ear. His wrist catching the first tear falling down Dennis's face followed by a steady stream spilling over his cheeks.
The two of them leaned in, crushing him between their steady and warm chests. His hands coming up to grip their arms, little hiccuping cries tearing out of him, both mournful and full of relief in equal measure.
He didn't know if he'd get worse, or if he'd get to be a doctor for long at all, and having them both here didn't ease the grief tearing through his organs over what his life was supposed to be. However, he wasn't alone to bear the brunt of it anymore, and that was enough for tonight.
hc that dennis started checking up on duke while robby was on his sabbatical, and the two became friendly, to the point that duke offered to teach dennis how to ride
by the time robby gets back, duke is almost done salvaging a motorcycle to offer dennis, and he tells robby as much, says maybe he, robby and dennis can all ride together sometime
dennis is giddy at the prospect while robby, hypocrite that he is, says absolutely not. there is no way his dennis is riding on that DEATH machine
dennis takes it as a rejection- his boss doesnât wanna spend more time with his intern, of course that makes sense -when really robbyâs mind is cycling through all the motorcycle accidents he had to treat in his career while picturing dennis
i luv accidental text stuff but robby texting dennis instead of his husband (jack) at like 9 AM and it says
why does he have to tuck his top in?
none of the other guys do that.
it makes his ass look so good it's like he does it just to torture me.
and dennis spends the rest of the shift trying to figure out what other guy tucks his scrub top in because surely it's not him and no he's definitely not jealous that robby's looking at someone else's ass he's just curious but none of the guys in the ED do so maybe it's someone from another department that came for a consult?
Dennisâs eyes trail after Robby as he watches the older man thunders through the ER, a volatile storm ready and poised to snap. Nurses and doctors alike part like the Red Sea, his bad mood so visible and in your face that even they know pleading their case would do nothing to get him off their back.
Even the rowdiest and most aggressive patients lining the hallways donât dare stop him and demand service like they do for everyone else. As he passes, their heads stay down, and their mouths are clamped shut.
Dennis watches for a moment longer, watching carefully as Langdonâs face twists into a frown after getting snapped at by Robby over nothing but a small nitpick. The interaction ends with Robby disappearing angrily into the stairwell before Dennis decides to do something.
âIâll be right back.â He murmurs softly, getting a nod from Dana in response, her eyes still trained on their patient. Should he have left her? No, but Dana is one of the most capable people inside the entire building; she could handle herself without Dennis helping her.
Dennis pats Langdon on the arm as he passes, giving him a small smile and receiving one back, before slipping out and following Robby into the empty stairwell.
Heâs greeted with the sight of Robby pacing around anxiously like a cornered dog, muttering to himself and cursing.
Dennis takes a step forward and softly closes the door behind him. âWhat are you doing?â He questions, his voice soft and light. He knows how not to startle a snarling dog. Robby was no different.
Robby looks up, a scowl still firmly on his face. âWhitaker-â
âShut up.â
Robby stiffens and finally stops moving, his jaw clenching as he stays silent.
Dennis moves forward until heâs directly in front of Robby and slowly reaches up, cupping the older manâs cheeks in his hands. âLook at you. So stressed out.â He murmurs, rubbing his thumbs against Robbyâs cheeks before reaching even further up and gently smoothing out the deep crevice marring Robbyâs brow, then cupping his cheeks again.
âDennisâŚâ Robby whispered softly, melting into his hold and nuzzling his cheek against the palm of his hand.
âYouâre being real fucking annoying out there, Michael.â Dennis continues, his voice still soft even as Robby stiffens. âDo you think that because youâre having a bad day, you get to act like a bitch to everyone?â
Robby stayed silent, but he slightly shook his head.
âThatâs right, you donât. Youâre not the only person in the world having a bad day. You're definitely not the person having the worst day in the ER at this moment.â
Robby lets out a soft, wounded sound, and Dennis can see the tears building behind his eyes, making them nice and glassy.
He likes it.
âTwo more hours, baby.â Dennis drawls, a small smile playing on his lips. âYou can handle it, canât you?â A nod. âGood. I know you can.â
âPleaseâŚâ
Dennis shakes his head, ignoring the pitiful expression on Robby's face from being rebuffing his plea. âLater.â He whispered, leaning in and pressing the softest chaste kiss to his lips and pulling away as if it had never happened.
Robby chased his lips desperately, but Dennis refused to give him any more. He hasnât earned it yet, especially not with his attitude.
âYouâll take me home with you after work, wonât you? And Iâll show you the consequences of taking all your big emotions out on our lovely coworkers.â
Robby whimpers. Dennis relishes in the pathetic sound. His pathetic sound. Dennis is the one who pulled it out of him; itâs his now. Robby is his.
âIâm sorryâŚâ
âYou will be,â Dennis promises, smiling at Robbyâs flushed cheeks and the way he shifts on his feet. âBut...â Dennis lifts his voice into a soft sing-song, chuckling when Robby perks up. âIf youâre good for the rest of the shift, I can promise thereâll be a reward for you. Can you do that?â
âYes,â Robby whispered reverently, leaning down even more and bumping his forehead lightly against Dennisâs. His larger hand comes up to hold one of Dennisâs wrists in place as he nuzzles even harder into his palm.
Dennis allows for the moment to linger before pulling away and stepping back, breaking the comfortable and warm bubble around them. âPull yourself together Dr Robby. We need you to take control of the ER.â
Robby straightens his Littmann and stands taller, a fresh, determined look in his eyes. âRight. Letâs go save lives.â
Robby steps back into the bustling ER, immediately getting to work, and Dennis slips back onto the floor right behind him, unnoticed. His change of attitude is immediately noticed, and beside all the ailing people around them, the ER is in harmony again.
Dennis watches as Robby gives a nod to Langdon, the closest thing the older man would get to a full-blown apology. Langdon readily accepts it.
Good.
Dennis turns and comes face to face with Dana, looking beyond exhausted, but as beautiful and sharp as ever. She looks amused and slightly concerned. Her eyes dart back and forth between Dennis and Robby as if she's trying to solve a puzzle.
âWhat was that?â Dana asks, an eyebrow raised as she juggles two blood transfer bags in her hand.
Dennis takes one and starts walking backwards towards a quietly waiting patient, a small, secretive smile on his lips. âJust a pep talk.â
ââ
My mind is jumping back and forth between âtheyâre not in a relationship, but theyâve been kinda flirting back and forth. This is the first time this has happened, but it's immediately perfect.â And a âthis is an established relationship already.'

she hadnât ever really been jealous before this. she hadnât needed to be. but then becca got a boyfriend, and mel felt so alone. this ugly, envious feeling exploded in her chest, and there was nowhere to put it. mel was trying to get over it, trying to accept the newfound independence. some days, she even enjoyed the space that was growing between her and her sister.
the days she spent with trinity were her favorite.
it was weird. they hadnât exactly been friends before the forth of july, but after many beers and a couple songs, a tenuous thing started. that drunken night turned into dinners after shifts and a horrible groupon mani-pedi experience. but, regardless of the hangovers or the burnt food or the risk of staph infection, mel alway had fun with trinity.
she had thought her jealousy cured. she had thought herself evolved. yes, beccaâs distance was hurtful, it wasnât what mel expected for them, but it left all this room for something mel could actually choose. and it seemed like trinity was choosing mel too.
they were finishing up charting, trinity was getting faster with melâs tips. they left at the same time most nights, usually grabbing something from a food truck together, at least.
trinity was twirling a strand of her hair around her finger while proofreading, and mel started to ramble âwhat are you thinking tonight? the taco truck will be there since itâs a tuesday, but iâm kinda feeling greek. i think the crepe people will be there, but i donât know if theyâll have the one you like this week. we could-â
trinity interrupted with an uninterested tone, fixing a spelling error as she said, âactually, iâm gonna talk with garcia tonight. she said she wanted to meet up.â
âohâŚâ mel deflated but tried to hide it. she was needy. she was overbearing and demanding and she shouldâve known she would always be the second choice. mel imitated a happy tone when she responded, âwell, i hope it goes ok.â
trinity sort of chuckled and looked at mel with a sarcastic expression. âitâll go swimmingly, iâm sure.â
mel felt that twist in her stomach. that feeling that confirmed she was still bad. that childish feeling she was becoming too acquainted with as an almost thirty year old woman. she swallowed the bitter taste in her mouth, nodded, and said, âiâm sure. i think she really likes you.â who wouldnât? mel thought.
trinity huffed and stood up, straightening out her scrub top. âiâll text you about how it goes.â trinity sort of stiffly asked, âare we still on for brunch and the farmers market on friday?â
mel took her consolation prize with grace. mornings were good, mel could be sunny again by friday morning. âyeah! iâll let you know when adam picks becca up.â
ânice.â trinity smiled down at mel, who was still sitting. she awkwardly turned away, not be able to look at mel as she spoke. âiâm looking forward to it.â
yolanda realizing that she sees trinity in everythingâshe has permeated every part of her life, every thought, every breath, every actionâwith the âambitiousâ comment. trinity has become the center of her life. everything, even ogilvie, brings yolanda back to her.
yolanda being forced to reckon with that while working a holiday shift at a level one trauma center. working and reckoning and remembering that theyâre supposed to be casualâperhaps simply because itâs what they agreed upon earlier, perhaps because trinity recently restated it.
yolanda freaking out and saying she might need a rain check not long after. doubling down when trinity doesnât fight back, because clearly it really is just casual to her. losing her mind and telling herself, over and over again, that she isnât in love with trinity, though she knows she is.
yolanda knowing that she needs to step backâshe should step away entirely, but losing trinity is unfathomable. deciding that she has to cut care out of it completely, that she can no longer be there for trinity for anything more than sex. telling trinity so in the stairwell, not only to protect herself, but also because she believes that letting emotions that arenât reciprocated into their arrangementâespecially ones as strong as loveâwould be taking advantage of trinity.

the nigh shift obviously knows dennis and robby are a couple but they pretty much never get to witness them act like one since both dennis and robby rarely do night shifts
technically the day shift is over, they just need to finish hand offs but the shift was so rough robby is barely holding it together. so when he sees dennis standing at the central writing something down he cant keep his hands to himself. he glues himself to dennis' back circling his waist and pushing his face into the crook of dennis' neck.
dennis hums and turns his face to the side to peck robby somewhere on his temple
"tired?"
robby makes a noise that can be taken as a "yes" and buries his face even further into dennis' neck, rubbing his cheek on him like a cat.
dennis giggles "you're scratching me with your beard, stop"
robby hums and presses his lips to dennis' neck instead.
dana is watching them with a fond smile and some night shift team members are pretty much staring with mouths open - seeing robby act like some big pup is like witnessing a dinosaur. most of them only heard stories, some up to this point still thought it was mostly rumors
yolanda garcia and emery walsh both watch jeopardy! and are unreasonably competitive about it. they keep track of their scores, percentage of questions right and wrong, etc. and share these data points after each episode. emery beats yolanda about 60% of the time, and that drives yolanda insane.
at some point, yolanda ropes trinity in, and she quickly finds out that trinity is pretty good with pop culture and sports questions. emery finds out about her opponent cheating and forces samira, who she soon realizes knows a lot more about art history than one would ever suspect, to participate as well.
it becomes a whole thing, and they more than once have a double âdateâ in which itâs just the four of them at emeryâs apartment competing in person. itâs way more serious than it should be.
