Listening to Indicud (Kid Cudi, 2013)
I decided on Indicud for today because I was just yapping about X (2022) and surprise, Kid Cudi is in it and he's a decent actor actually. Or maybe he's just in a movie I really like. This album in particular because it features Father John Misty and Kendrick Lamar and that's like getting recommendation letters from Pope Francis and Pope Leo so
Log 0: "The world is full of good vibes and that is what I seek" You have the beautiful soul of an optimist, Mr. Cudi
Log 1: Maybe it reflects badly on me, but there was a production change with Young Lady, and I immediately clocked that as being production that I am more familiar with. Maybe it's not that bad, just the point of the gauntlet--expand my familiar sounds. But yeah. As soon as he features a Lauren Canyon guy, it sounds like Laurel Canyon. Yeah
Log 2: Random aside, my very rigid cousin says that he would definitely get up and dance despite social anxiety if he heard Kid Cudi. So, another glowing rec. I think King Wizard is hitting me as more of a contemplative listen than a dance listen, but I'll hear it out. Usually, when I listen to rap/hip hop I'm looking for like, clever or interesting rhymes like Wu Tang, or funny and/or biting lines like Childish Gambino and Kendrick, or fun and big energies like 2Pac (THAT'S WHY I JUST FUCKED YOUR BITCH YOU FAT MOTHERFUCKER!!!) and Run DMC. I don't know yet where Kid Cudi is going to fall.
Log 3: Immortal coming in HOT with the big energy, ok I'm listening!
Log 4: It doesn't surprise me even a little that Immortal was released in the early 2010s
Log 5: I like the energy of Solo Dolo II. Sorry Mr. Cudi, I don't mean to overcompliment your duets and underappreciate your solo pieces.
Log 5.5: I don't understand my own bit. Cudi isn't even his name
Log 6: Damn, I was about to say see! You are a great solo-er! About Girls. Featuring Too $hort. I'm sure you'll solo crazy eventually Kid Cudi. The next song features HAIM. It's going to really embarrass me if that one ends up being my favorite.
Log 7: Yap alert, some songs about women by men who are attracted to women can be weird and objectifying, but some can be flattering in a roundabout way. I'd say (despite the race politics that feel way out of my depth) "I see pretty girls everywhere I go" is more flattering than leering. So thumb up for that. I also like that it sounds like a treadmill
Log 8: Oh hey I was wrong! The next next song is HAIM, not this one. And this one has a cute sound to it. Good for you Kid Cudi. I knew you could do it. Although it doesn't actually have his voice. Oh well
Log 9: Ok, Red Eye HAIM def sounds like someone invited a Christian Autumn fall lady to the party so it's a little jarring. But it's nice to know that maybe I have invite potential.
Log 10: Re: Mad Solar. No, no, I think highly of you. Don't say that about yourself :( Don't come back on Beez saying you don't give a fuck because I know you do. (I'm kidding, I know that's like the whole point) Also, the lyrics of Beez are so charmingly ridiculous. Go eat that zombie, Green Lantern! Or whatever it is you just said
Log 11: I like that sound effect. BLRLRBLRLRLBLRLR
Log 12: Burn Baby Burn is fun and silly. I don't think that was the intention, but I enjoy
Log 13: Lord of the Sad and Lonely has the same tone as Beez, which I like. Gandalf balls? Sure ok.
Log 14: I am very fond of Kid Cudi the character. I appreciate that he is so multifaceted. Shy and sad and worried but also ridiculous and cool and lustful. Badass and also not badass at all. He has the "cool confident person that likes anime!?!" vibe that Megan Thee Stallion and Wu Tang have, but he has 0 confidence but only most of the time. Sometimes he is very confident.
"Don't box me in, claustrophobe" I hear you, man. I'd never dream of it.
