it was a saturday and a nice day outside. okay—maybe a bit too warm for spring, but still nice.
despite that, you and your friends were at a shopping center. think, an outdoor plaza right on the pier. you guys were checking out the little stores, from boutiques to decorative shops. your favorite being this little turkish furnish shop with these jaw dropping colorful lamps!
another favorite of yours is, of course, this record store across from that shop.
this record store was quite chill with everyone to the point where they allow customers to get a couple listens in from the media.
as of now, you were checking out a cd from an artist you began to like.
two songs in, one of your friends incessantly tapped your shoulder.
“what?” you were about to scold em til they tilted their head toward the big window facing the walkway of the pier.
“this guy’s been lookin at you,” jesse excitedly says.
“uh, yes! he’s been at it for like five minutes.”
you fully turn towards the window, catching the guy’s eye and making him quickly look away. “aw, man. why’d you look?”
“dunno, wanted to believe you.”
“and?” you were trying to put the cd back in its case.
you chuckle, “why? what if he wasn’t really looking?” your hands tremble. what’s there to look at?
“y/n, you are one stubborn being. just—oh, shit! he’s here!”
you were quick to fully turn to jesse, your ears going red at the mere thought of a guy having any sort of interest in you. your sudden turn caught your other friends’ attention, having them stand by and getting a quick catch up.
jesse kept motioning behind you, you kept shaking your head.
“just say hi! what’s so bad about that?”
“look at me!” you motion to your black baggy pants and dark green, long sleeved shirt. “i look homeless.”
“since when do you care?? you always dress like that. BUT you’re good looking, dude!”
“nuh uh. it’s different.”
“dude, just talk to him! he looks real chill.”
you feel kinda nauseous thanks to that heavy fuckin feeling in your stomach.
“the worst that can happen is him flat out ignoring you. y/n, you’ll be okay.”
still, you shook your head. jesse sighed and swiftly made you do a 180 and the first thing in your proximity is THE guy:
with the doe-est of eyes you’ve ever seen looking at the cd shelves as nonchalantly as he possibly could, his friends were scattered around the store. you assumed you were hallucinating about the top of his ears turning pink.
jesse whispered to you, “love you. now—,” they nudged you forward.
the guy turned to you and smiled nervously, but damn, that smile had you. had you by the hair, limbs, everything.
“you like converge?” he motioned to the cd you still had in your hand. “halo in a haystack’s a nice listen.”
“oh, uh, yeah. i think converge is neat.”
“you should definitely give this one a try,” he pulled out a cd from the shelf about to hand it to you.
“petitioning the empty sky?”
he looked at you with surprise. “oh, shit, you know it!” he seemed excited, which made you smile in both relief and genuine contentment.
“yeah, my favorites are anithesis and shingles from that album.”
“shit-uh, sorry, i mean, that’s really cool,” frank trailed off with a silence following it for a second. you two stand there, frank suddenly perks up. “oh, i’m frank—by the way..”
you smile endeared at frank’s awkward charm. “i’m y/n.” You weren’t sure if a handshake would be good, so you awkwardly offer your hand.
to your surprise, he accepted it and his grip lingered. “you have a real nice name, y/n.” frank blushed and smiled at you.
“hey, frank!” one of his buddies called him, “let’s go check out that funnel cake spot.”
“uh, yeah. i’ll be right there!”
frank turned back to you and just realized he was still holding your hand, quickly letting go and apologizing for the abruptness. you chuckled a little cuz you found him silly yet endearing. “is it okay to ask for your number?”
“oh,” you were pretty surprised that this real cute guy just asked for your number so soon! “yeah.” you write on this random receipt you kept in your tiny wallet and handing it to him.
frank looked at the scribble and smiled yet again, “thank you, y/n. it’s really nice to meet you.”
you thought for a second on what else to say but frank’s friends were already dragging him out the shop.
when they were gone, jesse and your friends come back into the shop. jesse had a shit eating grin on their face, “so?”
you roll your eyes and flip her off, “i don’t even know if he’ll call.” jesse happily flipped.
three days later, 4:36PM on a thursday...
the telephone in your bedroom rang—well, all the telephones did. you reluctantly answered, assuming it was yet another telemarketer.
that had you sit the hell up.
on the other end, frank was with a friend at a pay phone downtown. he was smiling into the receiver.
you smile so hard you can’t stop. “i’m doing okay, hope you’re doing well. i wasn’t really sure if you were gonna call, actually.”
“yeah, about that i got caught up with school. sorry for not reaching out sooner.”
you shake your head, “don’t worry about it. i’m pretty swamped with school stuff, too. but…” you thought about what you’d say next, “i’m happy you called.”
“well, it’s rude to keep a pretty person waiting.” you hear his friend tease him, which made em laugh. “but, really, i mean it.”
you were gonna sleep so good tonight.
