フロム・モントリオールは、女子3人組のポスト・パンク・バンドで、Moss Line。先月、デビューEPの『July First』をFixture Recordsから発表しました。
一聴してわかる通り、同じFixture Recoreds所属のFreelove Fennerとか、あるいはGrass Widowなどからの影響を感るバンドで、こちらの思惑をスルスルと擦り抜ける、スカスカ・ペナペナの飄々としたバンド・アンサンブルが気持ちいい。Bandcampのコメントでは、RIYLとして、YMG、Slits、Neo Boys、The Chillsが上げられていたけど、他の記事ではRaincoatsとVaselinesとShaggsの結婚と書かれていたり、Grass WidowでNeo BoysならばKleenexからLiLiPUTという線もあるわけで、ともかく自己の音楽聴取の歴史に照らし合わせて、その歴史へのオマージュを感じる音は、無条件に愛することができるという好例。そんなサウンドにぴったりの、無表情なおすましヴォーカルもGood。

Moss Lime are a characteristically cosmopolitan Montreal crew, formed in spare time while hanging through the city’s playground summer. Murmuring chants calling back and forth over angle-surfing guitars and an ESG-sensible rhythm section recall double dutch tall cans in a parc before a late night swim in someone else’s pool. These songs have an influence-honest, naturalistic vibe. From the call & response lilt of “Ice Cream Sandwiches” to the tape-delay drone of “Fish N Chips” to the reimagining/improvement of Euro-pop song “Calabria”, each one will charm you with a shared memory of wet heat, cutoffs and iced coffee.

Moss Lime play “Chou Frisé” live at Casa, November 5th, 2014. They explained the story behind the song’s lyrics in this interview with The McGill Daily:
"The three of us worked at Jean-Talon Market in August and September, and it wasn’t the greatest experience. We were working nine-hour shifts and having to repeat the same things over and over again. So one night, we were all biking together after work, and we were rapping the phrases we had to repeat all day long, because we were like, this is insane! You have to think of a million different ways to say the same thing for nine hours straight … like, ‘Do you want a bag?’ So that’s where we got our inspiration for ‘Chou Frisé.’"
