Happy 2017 from our vacation in Iceland. The Aurora Borealis outside of the adorable and slightly pyromaniac village of Vogar, whose fireworks are among the most incredible I've ever seen. May this coming year be an improvement on the last. (Let's face it that's not hard.)
Delicious, delicious voting. The best part (and only reason I didn’t vote early) of voting in my Town is the 5th Grade Bake-Sale. Seriously, it’s the best motivator- vote, get homemade brownies. I don’t understand why more Towns don’t do this. Are there other places that do? These were quite delicious and I needed chocolate for surviving this election cycle and endless ads for people and issues that weren’t even eligible here! (The joys of New England media- because Massachusetts is so tiny and so blue, no one cares. But because most of New Hampshire gets the same stations out of Boston, we get to have all their nonsense!)
We are non-compliant at Mudderella New England 2016. Dirty Water Dames are ready to crush it!
So… apparently a slight majority of Hugo Montenegro’s mfu songs from the “Original Music From The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” CD is on youtube after all (unfortunately not all of them, I couldn’t find Solo Busanova, nor a good quality version of Solo on a Raft, but I did find Illya and a whole bunch of other cool songs)
I have the ones I managed to find, converted to mp3s over here if anyone’s interested (plus 2 bonus songs that are from another composer that I stumbled upon a while ago) - it’s a wetransfer link so the files will be deleted 7 days from now (I’m posting this May 26th 2016), be sure to get it before then!
here’s a screencap of the tracklist below the cut:
Thanks for doing this. I’ve got a few of those that you were missing. Dropbox (for anyone interested) because I can’t figure out anything else with this computer. Enjoy.

30 Days of Hogan’s Heroes Challenge
I had all these extravagant plans about things I was going to do for the 50th anniversary (which happens to be today!) and ended up doing none of them. Maybe this will kick-start some creativity. I’ve always wanted to do one of these but never cared enough to actually bother, but Hogan’s has had a special place in my heart for a long time now, so here we go. List was kindly compiled by belphegor1982. Things will be tagged with 30 Days of Hogan’s Heroes in case people aren’t interested in hearing my ramblings on the subject of 50 year old TV that I am way too invested in.
Day 1 - Favourite male character? Day 2 - Favourite female character? Day 3 - Favourite supporting character, male? Day 4 - Favourite supporting character, female? Day 5 - Favourite villain/antagonist? Day 6 - Character you think is misunderstood in fandom/misinterpreted? Day 7 - Favourite quote (recurring or not)? Day 8 - Favourite episode? Day 9 - Favourite scene? Day 10 - Favourite actor? Day 11 - Favourite actress? Day 12 - Least favourite casting/a casting you thought could have been improved with [insert name here]? Day 13 - Favourite friendship? Day 14 - Favourite canon romantic ship? Day 15 - Favourite non canon romantic ship? Day 16 - A scene that makes you cry? Day 17 - A scene that makes you smile? Day 18 - The scene, or episode, which made you learn something you didn’t know about WW2. Day 19 - An important (or not, your call) event of WW2 you wished had been featured/mentioned on the show. Day 20 - For a number of reasons, the writers never mentioned the Final Solution on the show. Should they have? If you think so, how do you believe they could have broached the subject? Day 21 - Scariest scene/character/episode/bit? Day 22 - Favourite fandom-related thing? Can be an author, a story, a piece of fanart … Something you really love. Day 23 - Least favourite part of the show (a scene/line/character/something that made you cringe)? Day 24 - How did you get into Hogan’s Heroes? Day 25 - Movie speculation time. Is there a particular character you have an unimpeachable fancast for? Day 26 - Favourite denouement/wrap-up scene/episode ending? (If not, favourite loose end. Or both.) Day 27 - Favourite reference (to a real-life WW2 incident/fictional shout-out/anachronistic 1960s random nod)? Day 28 - What do you think happened to the characters (Allied and German) after the war? Day 29 - Just tell us anything. Pick a random thing you want to get off your chest about the show. Day 30 - What is it that you love most about Hogan’s Heroes?
So, on the way back to Boston from HeroesCon in June, lisapizza said, “You know, DragonCon is going to be right around the time kellysue run on Captain Marvel ends. We should do something nice from the Carol Corps.”
It was, gosh, a two hour flight? And by the end, she, charmingpplincardigans and I had sketched out a plan to collect letters from Carol Corps members and try to round up Carol cosplayers to do some sort of nebulous salute that we had a name for–The 21 Carol Salute–if not a concrete vision. The main obstacle to this, we knew, would be getting the word out without Kelly Sue hearing about it first. We couldn’t use the “carol corps” or “kelly sue” tags, because we knew she browsed them. We needed to be sneaky.
We recruited laurennmcc who was also attending the con, to help us with ideas and also make sure Kelly Sue was where we needed her to be when we needed her to be there. We also filled in our friend caphairdadbeard on the plan, and she suggested making the book a pilot’s checklist. We spent quite a few weeks being super vague and sending messages to people, asking kitcox for help, and quietly collecting submissions.
I seriously lost my mind with stress. I was afraid no one would send anything in, the parts of the physical book wouldn’t arrive on time, we’d have no cosplayers, and about a billion other things. But it all came together. We got a bunch of submissions in advance, we handed out more at the con. We filled every page. We had a ton of cosplayers agree to help us. Laurenn promised to carve out some time for us at the end of the Carol Corps panel (at which point, walking back to our room, Sarah and I realized we needed to come up with actual human words to say). And…it all came together.
I have zero recollection of what Kelly Sue actually said at the panel as I was literally shaking (when she walked by on her way to stage she touched my shoulder to compliment my costume and I swear to god I jumped out of my skin with nerves and @alyjack80, literally shoved the book under her skirt), but I bet it was great. Laurenn called me and Sarah and KL up to stage and Kelly Sue immediately said “OH NO” and her reaction only got better from there. We spoke (I assume, it was kind of a blur) and gave her the book and did the salute and…yeah. You can see in the video.
It was really a moment that made me so, so proud to be in the Carol Corps and to have this comic that meant so much to so many people and this community that inspires and bands together to do good. I don’t know what else to say. Standing up there, watching all these people dressed as Carol profess their love and respect for Kelly Sue, seeing all the people who were so deeply effected by Captain Marvel, my heart felt happy and I knew we had done a good thing for a good person who has built something that will live on without her involvement, but has so much to thank her for.
Obviously, the weekend took a turn, and I hope that this was able to shine a little light into the gloom of the rest of it.
Thank you to lisapizza who couldn’t be at the con this weekend, and to charmingpplincardigans and caphairdadbeard for putting in tremendous work in making this happen. Thanks, too, to laurennmcc for all your support, kitcox for input, alyjack80 for changing her schedule to help, and carolcorpsatl for making time for us at the end of the panel.
Bigger thanks to every single person who contributed, from the people who sent things in advance, to the people who wrote messages while sitting in line for panels this weekend, to every single Carol cosplayer who so enthusiastically responded to my plea of, “Hi, I’m a stranger, can you help us with a thing?” Your finished product looked like this (picture courtesy of Sarah):
And of course, thank you, kellysue for the ways in which you made us better and the lasting community that you gave us that is bigger than you or any of us on our own. Thank you for encouraging us to be the stars we were always meant to be.
Awww, this is so sweet!!!
This was amazing and perfect. So honored to have been a part of it. Everytime I get together with the Carol Corps, I am reminded how beautiful, talented, awesome, and lovely everyone is. So proud of this community! (And continued thanks to the brilliant ladies who put it all together)
For the first time in forever, it was gloriously spring out, so D and I went for a walk along the rail trail in Hudson yesterday. As we walked, we spotted this beauty in the snow. “You’re a pretty pigeon,” was my brilliant observation as we walked by. Because I’m super good at birds. About 10 seconds later, I connected that he was not a pigeon and was very much not naturally occurring in Massachusetts. We reached the end of the trail and walked back, seeing him again and the fact that he hadn’t gone anywhere, I decided that we couldn’t just leave him out to the elements, so we would call Animal Control. Being Sunday, it was closed, so we called the police. They said they would try to get animal control, but as the bird wasn’t hurt or doing anything, it could take a while. We decided to wait and protected him from the bikes and dogs that populate the trail. A family came by and gave us part of a banana for him (he was more interested in eating D’s shoes and my nails, but it was a nice gesture.) He was quite content to sit with us. Eventually, it was getting late and the temps were dropping quickly. So we bundled him up in D’s coat and headed back to the car. On the way, I called K because her family is birders to see what we should do with him, since I’ve got a cat at home and was pretty sure an old turtle tank wasn’t going to cut it as a home. She wasn’t sure, but suggested if it had been a wild bird they would call Tufts Wildlife Clinic. So we did and they told us to bring him in. Upon inspection, the friendly and helpful staff told us that he was a little under weight, but otherwise healthy. This morning, I called the Hudson Animal Hospital on the off chance someone had reported a missing cockatiel. They told me someone had, so hopefully they will be reunited soon! (If you are from Hudson and missing a bird, you might call over to Tufts in Grafton, in case it wasn’t the same bird. According to K’s dad, this happens all the time and cockatiel’s have no sense of direction once they get out.)
BUT COMICS ABOUT WOMEN DON’T SELL!!!111 cries every neckbeard fanboy into the void
So.
I went to my local comic/music store to pick up my pullbox. It had been a while, so, I had quite a few titles there. The guy behind the counter wasn’t the comic guy, but he grabbed my stuff and chatted with me about Bitch Planet as I made sure everything was there.
And from behind me, this guy goes, “Oh, gettin’ comics? What’re you buying?”
And it was that tone, that tone right between expressing interest and being condescending, that you hear in comics spaces sometimes. Mostly as a girl. The person is cautiously optimistic that you share their interests, but also already pretty sure that you’re not going to live up to their standards.
But hey, I’m an adult, so I go, “Oh, Squirrel-Girl, Spider-Woman, Bitch Planet, Loki, Lumberjanes, Gotham Academy. And a second copy of Operation SIN number 1, because Scottie Young covers.” I hand my books back to the clerk, and the guy goes…
"Oh, girlly comics."
And I see the clerk’s face just close off, go to that polite ‘nothing’ face that experienced retail clerks make when they want to lean over the counter and punch someone but don’t want to get fired for it.
I turn around, and I smile and I say, “Yeah! Isn’t it great?”
And dickhead stares at me, not quite sure why I’m not absorbing his insult the way it was intended, so I just smile a bit bigger and go, “In that I’m a girl, and these are great books that are aimed at me, and I enjoy reading them.”
And then I just stare at him, pleasant customer service smile in place on my face, too. I can see his confusion, and it’s hysterical. I’m not embarrassed or threatened or humiliated by the fact that he dubbed my comics ‘for girls,’ because WHY WOULD I BE? I mean, he’s the one standing there with nothing but a copy of Superior Iron Man, so I’m pretty sure I’m going to be having a better night of reading anyway.
The clerk goes, “I read most of these. Bitch Planet is awesome.”
I then informed him that he could ACTUALLY order the stuff off of the back cover of Bitch Planet, and the two of us made excited noises about ordering the giant NC Foam Finger, and I paid for my comics, and I walked out.
I resisted the urge to explain to him that if he wanted ‘evil’ Tony Stark, I could rec him some fanfiction that did it much better than Superior did. I’m proud of myself for that.
So, you'll appreciate this, since apparently it's your fault. Stopped by the mall on my way home to try to grab the Spider-Gwen variant (which they were sold out of all but one copy of the basic cover, but hey, girl comics don't sell. Clearly!), And since I was there, picked up my comics and chat with the clerk about how awesome Thor is right now and that the annual is totally worth picking up. And then we get to Bitch Planet and discuss how it's probably the best, most exciting thing out right now. And he is super proud to be able to tell me that you can order the stuff from the back. We talk about the need to grab the tattoos and stick them to everything. I love my comic shop.
So wonderful
Agent Carter was everything I wanted it to be and more. I loved her in Cap and this is so much better. I love that she's getting her story told while her man is fridged. I need it to be next week now. Also, why does it have to be the coldest week of the year so far? All those fantastic 40s fashions... I wanna cosplay at work tomorrow. Stupid weather.

Yup, this is pretty much my reaction too, kitten :p
THIS MAY BE THE GREATEST THING EVER
What if Marvel owned all the rights to their characters?
It was my world
Today has been one of the most difficult days of that I can remember. I have given everything I have: all of my passion, all of my ideas, every available minute time. I don't get paid vacation time, yet I have taken weeks off of work, to promote and support an organisation which I loved for nothing- negative compensation if anything, since I had to pay for things like gas and hotel rooms. If they needed a volunteer, I dropped everything to make sure it happened. I have shown up to every event, to make sure I was there so I could connect with our staff and be a visible presence not some distant figurehead they only saw lecturing at meetings. I have cleaned and scraped, argued and promoted, advocated for those who don't have a voice and been reprimanded for speaking my mind. And for what? To be fired because I cared too much.
Even though no one will see this, I challenge you: when was the last time you sat down and had hours of conversation with a 2nd year staffer about their ideas, what they thought, and what they wanted to achieve? When was the last time you answered questions for a panicking first year trying to weave their way through what we all take for granted? Have you even spoken to an attendee? Asked what they like about the con, what they looked forward to? And the more difficult question of what they didn't like? Have you encouraged them even if their cosplay was poorly hemmed? Gone into the bathroom and talked somebody down and told them that the con could still be awesome even though their friends abandoned them?
Never will be the answer for many of you. Some of you it will be last week and I thank you and wish you luck in the future. Please, keep fighting that fight. I'm not perfect. I know that. I'm a bitch and I don't back down. I don't play politics. If you have my respect, it's because you've earned it. It makes no difference to me if you are con chair, a brand new security staffer or a famous voice actor: you start out the same to me. What you see, with me is what you get. I don't pull punches, but I also don't talk about you behind your back. If say something, it is always something I will say to your face.
The system as it exists, is corrupt and promotes cronyism. The very thing you were fearing when you made the by-laws has come to pass. Congratulations. You win. You have your perfect circle jerk that you've wanted since middle school. I gave you everything and you gave me nothing.
I think I'm most sorry for the little guys. You've lost your advocate. And tonight, I cry for you.
Snow day became successful work on cosplay day. Got super motivated by the ECCC Carol Corps party release, though I didn't work on my Captain Marvel outfit. I did, however, cut out most of my armor for Sif. I still have to figure it how to make the top piece of the corset and finish the outline for get shield, but I ran out of foam. Next step is to gesso and form the foam too prep for painting. I also rewatched Thor to get a better idea of the movement involved with her skirt. Mostly done with that now, I'm using a cheerleader pattern as a pattern and it works better than it has any right to. Done with snow. Is it March yet?
Watching Doctor Who: The End of Time
Brother: "Dude, you're monologuing."
Me: "He's a Timelord, that's what they do."
Brother: "The Doctor doesn't monologue. He dialogues. With himself. Like Deadpool."

Photos of my Captain Marvel cosplay at AX taken by the lovely Ro
Fantastic Carol that I had the pleasure of meeting at AX- these pictures are way better than mine. She is super sweet and her cosplay was even more amazing in person.
