âJust hanging out?â Martha pouted some, that not sounding nearly as exciting and romantic. âBut you like him, donât you?â She gave his arm a light squeeze. âI know things with Avery didnât end well, but that doesnât mean this relationship will be the same. Theyâre two completely different people, for one.â She hoped she was being encouraging. She knew Morty had screwed things up with Avery pretty badly, but she had faith that heâd be able to have a successful relationship. Jack seemed a lot more easygoing than Avery, for one.

Morty winced at the mention of Avery, avoiding eye contact as he took another sip of his drink. He didnât want to admit that he wanted to be able to make things work with Jack, or that he cared at all. It would hurt too badly when he did ruin things again. Avery had never been the problem, and he knew Jack wouldnât be either. Morty was carrying enough shame without having to look Martha in the face again and admit that heâd repeated the exact same mistakes again.Â
âI fucked things up with Avery because I left, and I donât know when Nathaniel will be back, but Iâm going to be leaving again. I donât want to get into anything serious.â He insisted with a small shrug. âI donât want to hurt him. Going out at all is probably a mistake.â
