“Listen, Evans…”

“Mhm?” She looked over her shoulder at the Marauder

“I’m sorry that people let you down… but they do that y’know?”

Lily chewed her lip. She didn’t look too upset anymore. “Yeah, they do,” she agreed. “But sometimes they surprise you for the better, too.” 

“Right, but how often does that happen?” asked James dryly. Lily smiled enigmatically, shrugging and returning to her prefect project.

“I dunno, she said, as much to the form in front of her as the Marauder behind her. “But it happened to me twice in the last two weeks.”

“Good evening, housemates,” Shelley’s voice cut through the brisk air. She had turned in her seat and, as though just noticing Lily and Carlotta, smiled broadly at them.

“Hello,” sighed Lily, probably anticipating an altercation.

“Hello, Shelley,” said Carlotta. “What a pleasant surprise: I didn’t realize you could leave your coffin before sunset.”

Shelley rolled her eyes, rising from her bench and climbing up to the higher level where her two housemates sat. Lily was immediately next to the wooden wall at the edge of the stand, meaning that the only available seat was beside Carlotta, who scooted closer to the redhead when Shelley sat down.

Remus: She asked us not to! To violate that would be a complete betrayal!

Peter: Remus won’t let me.

Sirius: It’s all about timing, mate. Tell him too soon and everything’s just awkward and people start fighting and it utterly destroys all the happy feelings in the Common Room. And that’s bad for my digestion. It’s all about timing.

Remus: AND about honoring our promise.

Sirius: Right. Whatever.

Remus: Padfoot.

James: well I’m sure we’ll still see each other…

Lily: absolutely, I mean, we’re mates, right…?

James: well I know I’ll still be hanging around with the Marauders.

Sirius: Obviously.

Remus: Of course.

Peter: Undoubtedly.

James: And Lily’ll be around, right?

Lily: Well I don’t plan on becoming a hermit, so…

Donna: I’ll still be in touch with Lily sure…

Marlene: Of course they’ll still be my mates… there are only so many wizards in England…

Reginald: It’s nice to think, but realistically

Mary: Marlene’s been my best mate since forever, so we’ll always be best mates. And Lily, too! Donna…

Donna: Oh, thanks.

James: Garrett Fedderton–he plays chaser for the National team. 

Sirius: Fedderton? ‘More of a Eggot man, meself.

Remus: er…

Peter: that’s an odd question…

Lily: Diana Rigg

Donna: no, thanks.

Marlene: Joan Jett.

So, this one time, I was at a carnival with all of my cousins and my parents and my aunt and uncle. And I was the youngest. And we were in this exhibit or something, and when we came out, my older siblings and cousins were playing on the steps of this big marble building. I wanted to play with them too, so I climbed up to the top of the steps, but when I turned around, all my family had gone.

So I sat on the steps for about ten minutes, but nothing happened. And then this lady with an ice cream trolley came by, and she asked me where my parents were, and I said they’d left while I was playing on the steps. And she took me to the Lost and Found, except I think it was for people, and not for sweaters or wands or smelly handbags, and then, eventually my mum came along and told me that Aunt Charlotte had all the children line up and counted them, and realized two were missing, but then she re-counted and realized just one was missing.

Sirius: Well, surely you would want us all to take you out. You want the package deal, yeah? In which case, I think we would’ve taken you to Paris.

James: Paris? Cliche.

Sirius: It’s cliche because it’s the best. Where would you take her? Vietnam? 

James: Yes, I would have taken her to Vietnam. Now what do you think?

Sirius: well, if Paris is too cliche…

Remus: It’s only cliche if you do it clichely.

Peter: You should make a t-shirt of that, Moony.

Remus: I’m just saying you can be original if you try.

James: well, why don’t we take Kelsey to Hogwarts? As a muggle, I’m sure she’d enjoy that…

Sirius: Hogwarts? Hogwarts is just a school.

James: muggles find that sort of thing fascinating…

Sirius: as fascinating as Magical Paris?

Peter: Did you really just call it “Magical Paris?”

Sirius: I meant the part of Paris that is inhabited by witches and wizards. First of all, the food…

James: the food is quite delicious…

Sirius: the cafe under Cours-la-Reine…

James: the underground lake…

Sirius: the Sienne after dark…

James: Okay, fine. Paris. But you have to go ice-skating…

Peter: her birthdays in June.

James: Yeah, but they have ice skating on the underground lake every evening. Magic, and all that.

Sirius: and then we could pop over to Italy…

James: for wine. And cheese. The French can say what they want, but nothing beats chianti…

Sirius: So early supper in Italy, dessert in Paris, and ice skating. And broomsticks should definitely be involved… no, I didn’t mean… you know. I mean the wood kind. Wait…

Peter: Keep digging, Padfoot.

Sirius: you know what I meant… flying is brilliant… and a muggle would appreciate that.

Remus: What about cake? She has to have cake.

James: Well that solves the Hogwarts question. We can come through Hogwarts for cake. The house-elves do unimaginable things with white chocolate…

Sirius: it might actually be illegal.

Peter: And we should stop in Honeydukes!

Remus: at any rate, Happy Birthday, Kelsey!

Sirius: Happy Birthday, Love!
