The CORE was a collaboration between Gaster, Sans, and Alphys.Â
Gaster provided overview for the project, making sure that the CORE itself wouldnât harm the souls of the denizens it was supposed to provide for. The project after all sought to harness the power of the Earthâs molten core, something no monster has ever tried before. Any mishap in the process could wipe the monster race down to the few boss monsters durable enough to take that sort of physical damage. Additionally, aside from providing overview, Gaster also devised the final step for converting the Coreâs output into magical electricity.Â
Sans, on the other hand, was the Projectâs physicist, an odd monster whose understanding of the physical world was far beyond any monsterâs. It was he who provided the idea to use lava as a source of energy for the CORE and created the fundamental principles that govern the COREâs workings.
Alphys worked as the Projectâs engineer. Though Alphys did provide input to the initial design to the Core as her knowledge was perhaps second only to Gaster and Sans when it came to their respective fields, Alphysâs greatest contribution was to take those designs and concepts and transform it into intricate structures of stainless steel and metal. Every pipe, gear, slab, and fuse that exists in the Core once existed in Alphysâs many many blueprints.Â
It took three of them to create the CORE; the absence of one wouldâve meant the Monsters still living in the literal dark ages - without light or hope to guide them.Â

âYeah, Iâm⌠An adult. Trust. In modern measurements, Iâm a senior citizen.â
No punchline, no laughter, no forced smile to soften his words. That was just the truth. He wasnât a child. But, boy, did he feel like a child where he stood. Defenseless, scared, vulnerable. Home, up on the SURFACE, was far, far away, wasnât it? His parents were probably trying to get into his home for a visit, co-workers wondering where on earth he went. It wasnât like him to skip work.
It wasnât like him to climb random mountains and end up in the darkness, either. If only he couldâve reconsidered! Out of all the stupid decisions made in life, Virote was finally paying for one of them. Though, could you blame him for going up Mt. Ebott to escape for a while? Life was⌠Hard. God, it was hard. Everything always felt like a crushing weight. Never good enough. Never getting a chance to relax. Everything busy, everything noise.
Unfortunately, it was better than whatever the hell this was.Â
This fellow, this DOCTOR GASTER, didnât seem too willing to help him get back home. For heavenâs sake, he wanted to observe his DISSECTION after inevitable death. No shred of remorse or pity in him ( that Virote could detect, anyway. ) When the monster reached out and ghosted a hand through his form, there was a chill of fear that ran through him like ice, lump forming in his throat. His mouth opened, but only a whine could escape.
If he didnât feel the harsh reality of terror before, he certainly felt it at this point.
âWhereââ Virote, find your words, âI donât understand. What do you mean? You are here.â
Gaster beamed despite the sudden incoherence of his audience; the human bounced back every time he did that, and he didnât have reason to believe this time would be any different. So instead of idly wasting time waiting for Virote to recover, he began to think instead with a soft rapt of his fingers against the back of his hand like a metronome.
He thought and mulled, staring unblinkingly at Virote and calculating his chances of surviving this ordeal. It was after all a question likely to be asked, for what sentient creature would not put his own survival beyond all things? However, Virote always seemed to surprise him, starting from his compliment to being an outlier in height to the question he asked now.Â
Rocking his head sideways like the ticker of a grandfather clock, Gaster steepled his fingers together. âYour question, to be answered fully, requires time you no longer can afford to lose... so Iâll accommodate by being brief.âÂ
âImagine a box that interacts with the whole of your world yet is separate from your physical laws.â
He brought a single finger up, lips curling up. âIn particular, your law of space!â
âBecause space does not exist within this box, neither do your concepts of position and proximity. Therefore, I cannot be anywhere by definition. But because this box intersects your world, thereâs a natural blur between this box and your world, allowing for mutual observation in the right circumstances.â
âYour soul resonates with my soul by virtue of your magic,â Gaster pointed his finger at the center of Viroteâs chest.
âAnd because your soul resonates with mine, you fulfill the first of two conditions for mutual observation. You fulfill the second by being Human; much like how Light descends to the Kingdom Below, you bring a piece of the Kingdom Above - your Physicality. Thus, I appear before you now.â
âSadly my ability to observe this physical realm is limited, for all I can see is you... and the presence of something more physical than you awoken by your Fall.â Â
The scent of flowers permeated the caverns.Â

// Oh. My asks were off.Â
// Good night everyone. Iâll reply and do starters tomorrow.Â
The bedroom was pitch black, other than the glow of the moonlight that crept through the curtains. Ever since she had taken a job as a journalist, her days seemed to run her ragged. Seeking the truth was a thing of the past media had its own lean, and it couldnât be helped there was a bias. Yet she wasnât going to give up on her career one of these days she would find a story worth reporting on. As of now what she needed to do was sleep. Yet her body lay restless as her mind wandered.
About twenty minutes later she was starting to doze off. Only to have a pang of discomfort wake her. Its as if her conscience was warning her something was there watching her. Rubbing her eyes, she reached for the lamps switch next to her. Taken back she nearly covered her mouth her pupils dilated. She had seen an aberration one that seared into her mind. Â
âW-Who are you?â
@mortalcircle
âI am Doctor W.D. Gaster, human whose soul is like a monsterâs.â the figure spoke with a tilt of his head, baritone voice like ash falling upon lacquered wood. He stood hunchbacked at the far side of the room, body intersecting with the wall behind him as if he were a ghost. His neck bent impossibly as he observed the humanâs expression of fright. He smiled benignly.
âI initially hypothesized from your supine position that you were just waiting for death,â the monster said without a hint of inflection, âBut given your alertness now, I surmise you were just trying to enter slumber - maybe in a bed of some sort during the evening hours.âÂ
The monsterâs head twisted and entered through the wall behind him. His voice carried, âAhh. Yes. That makes sense. This would make this your place of residence then. And the four approaching humans with similar souls to yours - oh, that cylinder - fascinating, a soul containment device.âÂ
All of the light within the room winked out in that moment; a cursory glance would show the whole neighborhood in blackout, moonlight the only illumination remaining.Â
The monster however continued talking, either unphased or oblivious to the sudden change in lighting. âI invented those, you know? Though theyâre only useful within the first hour of a humanâs demise - past that the soul starts degra-âÂ

whotookmygrapesâ:
Fluff was horribly, horribly confused. He had no idea what exactly had caused him to end up here (perhaps someone should educate him on FUN values in the future) and only the slightest nagging at the back of his skull informed him that he ought to know who this person was, or at least, that he shouldnât have forgotten.
This was one of those rare alternate versions of Sans that was not exactly the assistant. Nor did he have any scientific background beyond being a guinea pig. Which probably explained the unfortunate deformities.
âMe? Dressing up in one of those ghastly things?â he asked, as if the notion of changing into something so drab and sterile offended him more than perpetuating the cycle and messing around with another monsterâs life. âWell, at least youâre honestâŚâ
Offended or not, he knew not to disobey orders from someone who could either punt him into the sun, scramble the contents of his two feeble brains or both. Reluctantly, he reached out for a coat and winced when he touched the fabric, quietly sobbing as he pulled it over his coat. He was obedient, but that didnât mean there wasnât going to be any dramatics.
A quick glance confirmed that the monster, whether it was the flamboyant coat or the skeleton underneath, put on the coat. This at least meant the monster can follow instructions. All he needed was a monster that didnât have a scientific background, just so he can recreate the findings of this interesting little experiment.
âIt may be ghastly, but it is procedure,â Gaster spoke with finality as he led his new assistant into the next room of the Lab. Behind the one-way glass window lay a yellow lizard-looking monster with a helmet on her head and arms and legs strapped into the chair she sat on. Her eyes looked glazed from behind her glasses as if staring out into space.Â
Gaster took out a small remote from his pockets, the jostling of his labcoat allowing his name tag âDr. W. D. Gaster, Royal Scientistâ to be seen. The monster fiddled with the remote, its circular dial set at 1 and numbers labeled between 1 to 10.Â
He calmly led his new assistant to the table heâll be sitting at with a nice red button straight in the center which also happened to give him a direct view of the lizard monster across the glass.Â
âWhatâs your name?â Gaster calmly said as he placed the tip of a pen against the paper on the clipboard. âI need to record the operator for this revolutionary experiment.âÂ
âAs for the experiment itself, I will tell you to press the button at regular intervals at which point you should press the button,â Gaster calmly said, âWe will deliver varying degrees of electrical shocks to my former assistantâs head to determine if it will reverse her coma.â

@endlessdivinitiesâ has liked for a starter.
The Void - always called a space or referred to as a place.Â
But Gaster didnât believe it was either of those things; the interpretation however made it easier to imagine though.Â
No, the Void was more of a concept, a concept that rejected the law of the physical and made it inconsequential - a concept he came across trying to pierce the veil between his world and the next.
Time. Space. Proximity. Form. All referred to the physical - and all very meaningless here. In this boundary between the physical and spiritual, he existed everywhere and nowhere, immortal yet dead, and connected and isolated all at once.Â
Because this was the Void where physical law had no say.
In here, he simply was. He thought, therefore he existed. Nothing more. Just an eternal observer looking down upon his metaphysical throne. And it was from this position that Gaster spoke.Â
No words would be said, for words would require a body and a medium to pass them through, yet the message would be conveyed as if he were communicating with this new stranger soul-to-soul.Â
â...Something comes. A cog in the gears of how your world works. A thought and many thoughts not your own shining through your SOUL.â
âFascinating. Humor me, little passing divinity. How have you ended up here?âÂ

softestmoodâ:
âBut, Iâm an adult⌠Thanks, though. Nicest compliment Iâve ever received.â
Now, I know what youâre thinking. Virote Srisati is short as hell. He often struggled to reach the top shelf at Whole Foods and he always came CHEST HIGH to other people. Heâs tiny. Heâs small. HE GOT IT. He knew he was little for a grown man. BUT, DAMMIT. HE WASNâT GONNA LET A STRANGER REFER TO HIM AS A CHILD. âBut, okay. I know Iâm not the regular size of an adult human, but, like, I am one? Trust me. I can even show you my license. Iâm old, in my mid-twenties.â
Now that THAT was out of the way, onto more important matters.
âNow, um. Gaster? Doc? I regret to inform you that my liver is probably on the verge of screaming and escaping my body, but I donât want it replaced.â AND, ANOTHER AWKWARD PAUSE. âYou see, Iâm just kind of waiting to die. You know, like, just let myself rot and pass. In fact, you can move along and forget I exist! Just lemme die, dude. Let my liver just, like, explode? Is that was livers do? Kidneys shutting down? Iâm not a scientist, I donât know a damn thing about anatomy.â
You know⌠He sure was a touch too casual about dying. âI donât know where I am, or how I even got here. Iâd be more terrified if I wasnât completely confused. So, if you arenât gonna EAT me, what ARE you gonna do to me? You seem kinda friendly, Mister Gaster.â
Good job, Dr. Gaster. Master of science. Master of giving compliments. Was there nothing he couldnât do? The monster preened in place for a moment before redirecting his attention back to Virote.Â
He squinted at the human, white pupils against a dark abyss staring right at the not-child. Several slow blinks later, the monster tentatively inquired, âAre you sure youâre not a human child? Youâre not even within the 5th percentile of humans Iâve observed in terms of height. Then again, I suppose you could be an outlier standing at the very bottom. Interesting. Interesting.âÂ
The doctor tilted his head at Viroteâs declaration of waiting to die, countenance only contemplative and completely lacking any pity. âIf youâre simply waiting to die, I suppose youâve found the best place to do it.â His head twisted in a full circle as if to scan their surroundings. âSo many lights lurking in the dark. Yes... if they remember what you are, human soul like a monsterâs, you will die.â
âIt may not be the same as you willingly offering your body, but if the Royal Scientist of this place has any competence, Iâll still observe your dissection all the same.â The monster casually shrugged, no malice behind his heavy words - as if every phrase was built upon a solid foundation of fact.Â
âMe? Do to you?â The monster smiled. His outstretched hand casually swiped through Viâs shoulder, phasing through as if he were a ghost. âI canât do anything.âÂ
âHuman Virote,â the doctor said fondly, âIâm not even here.âÂ
