Amusing Muse

More and more shoves came at the door and the angered voice of her husband was muffled but very clear with his threats to her. Alessa breathe hard and knew she was about to lose her grip on the door but then then it stopped and she opened her eyes, which blurred her vision due to the tears which coated her eyelashes. The bartender held the door still and she took the bat, bolting from the door as if it were a pile of venomous snakes. “That’s my-” she stammered, bat wavering in front of her as she prepared from him to storm through that door somehow. 

“That’s my husband. I-I-I- can-can-can-can’t go back to him. He’ll kill me.” These weren’t words to just throw at him. These were words she firmly believed in. And the way she shook, unable to raise the words higher then a frightened whisper while the drunk man on the other side of the door yelled the most vile words at her was clear she wasn’t full of shit. The man on the other end was deranged and she was at the end of the road, one which was paved with people who refused to believed her.

Gunner’s hold on the door didn’t loosen as the woman retreated. He locked the door but kept his hand on it just in case the guy decided he would try to break it down. “Mate, I suggest you leave. The bar is closed. You’re trespassing.” It was his own dwelling, which meant he was the one in charge. He had the right to remove anyone from the premises. Regardless of their reason for being there. He had no knowledge of what was really going on with the woman behind him, but he didn’t really need any. She was terrified and shaking like a leaf and there was a very angry man trying to break the door down.

“You don’t have to leave,” he told the woman. “You can go upstairs and hang tight. Through the back door, passed the kitchen. There is a door to the right. It’ll lead up to the top floor. I live there.” He had bought the building for that very reason. He liked that he didn’t have to go far to work. It was always just right there. Plus he could take care of his employees if something happened. He used it to help out a few locals as well. “You’ll be safe of there.”

It wasn’t like him to want to keep something showing their gratitude when it was one of those acts that any decent person would do. Then again, when you lived in the city it was harder to come by nice people compared to the small town of Castlebury. Most of the issues that happened always surrounded the his trips into the city and he hated how it was a good place to live it wasn’t exactly the ideal location for him. Too many days did he think about how it would be nice to move to California and be close to the beach. Though, for now, this was where his dad was and it made it easier to get by with his money; which funded his apartment. 

“Yeah. Sure.” he nodded slowly, giving a raspy voiced response as he pulled a hand free from a pocket and dragged it through his hair. “What type of photoshoot if it’s alright for me to ask?” Their elevator beeped as it lowered one floor at a time. Soon it’ll open and he’d have to watch her run out or, “If you’re short on time I can have my driver take you?” 

“Oh um,” she said hefting her bag on her shoulder. “I’m a print model. I’m doing a photo shoot for a designer today, but if I don’t get there on time they’ll give my contract to any number of other girls that are vying for the job.” Models in this town were a dime a dozen. Each skinny, mostly likely from doing crank and “forgetting” to eat, leggy, and lacking in the boob department. Ever was basically the exact opposite of that. She wasn’t tall at all, coming in at barely 5’2. She wasn’t their version of skinny, either. She wasn’t considered a plus size model, how could she be? She wore a size 2. But she wasn’t able to fit in the size zero and therefore wasn’t considered skinny.

“It’s very competitive.” She hated how much she had to fight what she could get, but it wasn’t as bad as it was for the runway models. She could handle this. “You have a driver?” She asked, her face lighting up. “That’s awesome. I really shouldn’t take you up on the offer, but… I kind of want to. I’m sure that’s rude… thank you, though.”

Paul walked back into the room, stuffing his face with the last of the crumbs from the bottom of a chips bag he found in the pantry. They were stale and the sour cream & onion powder was basically all that remained. Didn’t make for the most satisfying nosh but it was better than nothing. “Oh. But I must. That’s what I’m good that.” He leaned back and tossed the empty bag onto the counter and went back to the sofa and dropped down on it. If they managed to get that apartment downstairs occupied than the people would’ve though a body dropped hard on the floor with how he went down. 

He leaned forward, surprised he didn’t face plant with how spinny he was but this wasn’t his first drunken rodeo, and he pulled the container of melted ice cream his way, drinking from it. There was a dribble which came from this and it landed on his shirt. He looked down, while licking his lips, and ran a hand across the dot. “I know. Most people hate how sexy I am, too. But what can I do about it?” he chuckled setting back and leaving the ice cream container on his knee. 

Demitri scoffed as his filter slipped. “You’ve been torturing me since I met you,” he said flatly. It wasn’t a bad torture, really, but it was torture nonetheless. Demitri had always found Paul to be an attractive man, though he rarely paid much attention to looks. Demitri was what many considered Demisexual. He preferred the emotional connection to people. When it came to Paul, Paul was his best friend. Beyond his friendship with Amos, which had gone south with the end of their relation, Paul was one of the only people Demitri actually felt connected to. Through that connection, he was able to see the attractive qualities of the man and torture himself with the whatifs and the never gonna happens.

His finger tapped on his chest while he listened to Paul move through their small apartment. The second the man landed on the couch, Demitri felt it through the floor. It vibrated and shook the ground a little bit. “The people downstairs are going to hate you if you keep trying to break through the floor like that.” He didn’t actually know if there was anyone in the bottom apartment at the moment, but the sentiment was the same regardless. “You could try being less hot. Or more gay. That would help.”

“I-uh. Hmm.” He said as he shook his head and brought a phone out. “What brings you to Lima?” He asked as he got the Maps app up and typed into it. “Four hours. Give or take.” Sam looked at the woman and noticed her stance. She looked like she wasn’t at ease and he wondered if it had to do with him. Some people weren’t cool talking to strangers and he practically moseyed on over and talked to her as if they were friends or something. “Are you from there? Chicago there.” Sam, quit it. Play it cool. She’s just got the prettiest eyes you’ve ever seen and you’ve already made yourself look like an idiot with Quinn when you complimented hers in Na’vi a bunch of years ago. 

Sam looked at the phone in his hand and offered it to her. “You need to use it to call her? There’s a place close by if you want to use a pay phone or somethin’ if you rather not use mine.” Sam was on the verge of a ramble and he caught the tip of his tongue between his teeth and pressed onto it but managed to smile because that’s what came natural for him. 

“We were just driving through… We were on our way to… I’m not even sure, truthfully. James just wanted to get out of town and this was on our way. Did you say four hours? That’s not going to work. I can’t call her. She’ll kill me.” Xera had a life that was far more put together than Tara’s. She was happy and thriving, which was such a blessing considering her rocky start to life, basically. Now it was Tara’s turn to fail miserably. “Maybe I can just get a train back. Where is the train station?” 

The second she got back into town she was going to burn all of James’ things and leave them in the trash can outside of their apartment. He wasn’t on the lease so she didn’t need to worry about that. He was so gone. Perhaps she could convince Matt to toss him off the Navy Pier. That would be satisfying to watch. “I’m sorry, this is a really shitting situation I’m in and I’m trying not to cry right now.” She was so angry and worried, but she knew this was her fault. She’d gotten out of the car. She’d been the one to agree to the trip in the first place. This sucked.

Technically their lunch break didn’t take long but to Richard it gave him enough to learn about the teacher, who he didn’t plan to strike up a conversation with to the point he set his day to the side to get to know better. Now they were at a point of the afternoon where this must come to an end but there was promise for more later. With drinks and conversation to fill the night. 

“Yeah. I suppose. Not that I’m thrilled about it but the school might come looking for you if you don’t return to your students. The nurses with me if I don’t get back to the medical center.” he chuckled and picked up his case and went to the door. This place must cater to the teachers from across the street because now it appeared a ghost town when fifteen minutes ago it bustled with life. “So. The plan for later, if you’re still down. Want to meet around seven? Seven thirty? Can’t keep us out too late since it’s a school and work night.” He chuckled at this and hoped she wouldn’t see this as a pushy move on his part to see her again.

“I do like my job, for the most part,” she laughed. “I’d rather not get fired because I just didn’t come back to work.” She would find herself in so much trouble if she decided to skip out, even if it was to talk to a handsome doctor. Worth it and satisfying in the moment but unprofessional and impractical. “You’re cute but your smile isn’t worth losing my job.” It was worth a lot, she was sure, but it wouldn’t pay her rent and that was where her logical and practical side came in.

“Seven sounds good. Do you want to meet somewhere or…?” She had no problem meeting him somewhere for the date, she was just excited about the date, but she knew some guys liked to pick the girl up. If that's what he wanted to do, she wouldn’t argue. She kind of liked when the guys were little more old-fashioned when it came to how they approached dating.

With his time away he could have grabbed a pair of jeans to at least make an attempt to be presentable but having the police in his house made his brain not work in the way it needed and he returned with his license, boxers still very much in plain view. “They don’t call you Detective Lacy?” Why did he ask that? In what movie or show did anyone get called Detective first name?” Brian let a chuckle loose to show this was a bad joke, even when it wasn’t meant to be. The license returned into his hand and he busied his fingers with it. 

“Is there much your partner has to do when it comes to the paperwork? I can take the cat and keep it here until I find the owner. I will hate for it to go to the shelter. Those places are rough.” He didn’t have anything here to take care of an animal and knew cats needed a litter box, at least. Brian thought about this while he looked at her, smiling at the woman because it was hard not to. “Sorry. Just. Small world, you know? From the gym to here. I should have introduced myself before but it’s hard to get a conversation going when you’re in the middle of your thoughts during a workout.”

She let out a little chuckle when he asked about her title. “It's just Officer Benson,” she told him honestly. She wasn’t a detective and she didn’t really want to be. She liked being a beat cop. It was active and interesting. She got called out on all kinds of calls. “Officer Cox will be fine. A little paperwork never hurt him.” She was still getting used to the asshole that was her new partner, but she wasn’t going to worry about him doing paperwork. He’d likely just stick her with it anyway. “He’ll find the owner, if not, I can bring the cat back to you.”

She flipped her pad closed and slid it into her pocket, a smile on her face that had nothing to do with her job. “Small world indeed.” She had recognized him the second she had seen him. It was rare that she actually knew or at least had an idea of who one of her callers were, but it did happen. “Maybe the next time you see me in there stop and say hi, yeah? I won’t complain.”

Jay stood there, a hand on the top of his head while he held the television remote in the other. “It’s probably-” he said as he looked around the room to see if there was an open window or if they left the back door open but everything appeared normal. “nothing. The TV’s on. That’s all.” He clicked it off and set the control down on the coffee table. “I need to take a quick shower. Working in that house soaked me through.” He pinched the front of his shirt and moved it back and forth as if to aerate. 

“Think you’ve got everything handled before I get back?” Always one to give Nick a hard time, catching their reflection in the mirror next to the bed. He let his sister decorate the house for them and he usually hated that mirror there. It was hot some nights when he could watch what they got up to in this bed, but it always made it feel like a cheap motel. 

Nick shrugged when the TV was turned off. He hadn’t noticed, truthfully. Possibly he has been the one to leave it on. He liked to watch the news while he was getting ready for the day. On days that Jay rushed him out of the house, he had been known to forget the tv existed altogether. Especially if he was in the kitchen preparing his coffee when Jay was being insistent that they leave. “You know,” he said looking over at his boyfriend, “I also need a shower.” He walked over to Jay, a smirk on his lips as his fingers slid under the shirt he wore. “I could join you in the shower. Conserve water...” He didn’t care about the water, he knew neither of them did, he was just being cheeky.

With the near collision behind him Aiden went to Jeremy, who looked put off about everything which happened tonight and the smile from before found it’s way back to his lips. “Where the fuck did you get the idea I hate you?” The man could go on and on about ways he like to give him shit but hate? That was reserved for a select few in his short list of names. “You’re one sensitive son of a bitch, anyone ever tell you that? Somebody gives you a hard time because they see it gets underneath your skin and you automatically assumes it’s out of hate.” Aiden shook his head and stepped to the side to let somebody get into their car.

“I followed you because I wasn’t done talking back there but you decided to storm off in a mood and then I nearly got my ass ran over by Miss Daisy over there.” He cocked a thumb in the direction of the road, where it showed a STOP sign the woman clearly ran. “Look. Go back. Get another taco and I’ll buy you a beer. There’s no reason why you need to get your panties in a twist of light ribbing.” He said with insistence in his tone.

Jeremy rounded on Aiden, anger flashing behind the glasses he wore. “You’ve spent years, YEARS picking on me.” Jeremy’s hand flew out and he jabbed Aiden in the chest as he spoke. “ All you do is poke and poke and poke. You never get my name right, do you even know it? Despite having dated my sister. Despite going to school together. You have no idea who I am, but you make time to make fun of me. You have no problem reminding me just how much of a loser you think I am. I’m not sensitive. I’m sick of your shit.” 

He took a step back from Aiden, trying to put distance between himself and the man made of both dream and nightmare. He had spent years pining and hating Aiden. Being this close to him what not helping either of those feelings. The only thing that did cause Jeremy to crack a smile was the Miss Daisy comment. “Maybe if you weren’t being a jerk and actually treated someone decently you wouldn’t have nearly been run over.” Jeremy had made the right choice to walk away. It was easier that either hitting Aiden or crying. Both had been viable options. “It wasn’t light ribbing Aiden. You’ve been doing this since high school and I’m tired of it.”

Hannah looked around the small bar and grill while she held a flat in her hand. It felt hot but not to the point it’ll scald her fingertips. “What’s wrong with this place? It has food, music from a jukebox and charm.” Right as she said this someone behind them shouted obscenities at the TV. “And then there’s that man. He adds to the whole feel of the place.” She laughed and took a bite from her wing and tried not to snort at the bathroom comment “I can see that as an absolute deal breaker. I haven’t seen the state of the women’s room.”

“You, a grown ass man, tried to fly off the roof with a toy broomstick or did I miss the part you were a child in this?” she laughed along with him, which was easy because he has a nice laugh. Hannah finished her flat, which was a challenge to do in front of him. They could have picked a better place to eat but it was too late now and she loved wings too much to let it go to waste. She picked up her beer and raised it to him in a toast, “To idiot friends and making our lives interesting.”

Tommy gave her a pointed look as the man in front of him and behind Hannah shouted obscenities at the tv. His point was made with just that one moment. “Oh sure, it’s real classy. Who doesn’t want to eat surrounded by drunk sports fans cursing into their beer because their team is losing?” The was a note of sarcasm to his voice and a laugh on his lips. This place was great if he was hanging with the guys and had an evening filled with drinking and moronic ideas, but it wasn’t all that great if he was trying to get to know a cute photographer. “The bathrooms really sure be inspected before sitting down for a meal… some of them are bad.” He laughed for a second and shook his head. “A friend of mine used to be a stripper and she put, no joke, an embroidered picture in the women's bathroom at the place she used to work. All it said was ‘please don’t do blow in the bathroom.’” Tommy had some interesting friends, it was true.

“Hey,” he said reaching for a wing, “just because I look like an adult doesn’t mean I actually am one. At least, not with a few shots in me as well.” Upon waking up, he had also questioned his sanity, but it had been fun in the moment. He wasn’t going to deny that. “Besides, who doesn’t grow up wishing they were Harry Potter? Quidditch sounds like it would be fun to play.” He laughed at her toast and raised his own glass. “To idiot friends… and to sometimes being the idiot friend.” He grinned broadly and took a sip of his beer then held it up again for another toast. “To unstable bosses having meltdowns and impromptu days off.” He didn’t like Myra at all, but he wasn’t going to complain about her mood swing. He was finally conversing with the photographer he’d had his eye on.

Mercedes, who’s hands were clasped together tight in front of her, kept her eyes on Sam. This was a person she’d grown to know over the years and sometimes it was hard to get a solid read on him. He’d drift away and have a vacant expression but she knew that there was a world of thoughts happening behind those green eyes. Her hand broke free from the other and slipped over his; aware that this gesture could be taken many different ways and there may be buzz about them online later that night. 

“I have a driver. It’s easier to get around with one instead of taking myself. Plus I hate the freeways here. I thought traffic in Lima was bad but Los Angeles is a whole other beast.” She got up and as soon as she pulled her purse onto her shoulder a man approached her. It was the venue’s owner and they wanted to discuss if she’d have interest in hosting a karaoke night next month. The offer wasn’t one she wanted but she knew how important it was to get her name out there, even with a fresh single out on iTunes as of last week. She said she’ll let her agent get in touch with him and waited for Sam to join her. “You hungry? We can get food on the way to my house. I’d offer to cook but the only thing I have there is boxed macaroni and cheese. Last I remember you eat enough to feed a family of four.”

Some people wanted a picture with her and she took them, glad they weren’t autographs because he hand hurt. The driver she mentioned waited up front and soon Mercedes was in the back of the car, able to breathe. She wasn’t famous, not by a long shot, but this felt like a lot. Most days she loved it but when it came to trying to find privacy in a world which wanted her attention. It was tough to come by.

Sam was used to being misunderstood and underestimated. It was not always one of his favorite things about himself, but people often saw his flightly aloof behavior and interpreted him as stupid. It really wasn’t that he was dumb, it was just that there was so much going on in his head that his focus tended to wax and wain. It came and went like the tide. Some days it was spot on and other days you’d think his head was made of cloud. He had no control over it, truthfully. Some days he just could not make himself focus on anything. The part of himself that he did like, that others also tended to get frustrated with, was his lack of seriousness. It didn’t like to focus on the negative or the unfun.

Sam liked to be the life of the party. He liked to sing and dance and be entertaining. So when he was being serious, it meant that it was something truly important to him. His move from Lima to LA was important to him and he wanted… no, he needed Mercedes to understand that and accept it. Maybe he hadn’t done this the best way he could. Maybe he hadn’t planned things out. His move had been impulsive and silly, but it was his and he didn’t regret it. 

Since coming to LA, Sam had learned his way around on the buses and walking. He completely understood why Mercedes had a driver. The traffic in LA was a completely different creature. Even when compared to New York. Thankfully his time spent in the big apple had prepared him for mass transit. Getting around in LA wasn’t all that different, save for the lack of a subway. That, to him, was a bit strange. He didn’t mind, it was just a little odd. He scoffed at her when she asked if he was hungry. “I’m always hungry. Grabbing a bite is a great idea.” She was right, he could eat for an entire football team, but he wouldn’t put her out like that. It was just rude and he wasn’t going to be that person.

He slid from the table as she did and waited in the background while people talked to her and took pictures. Some might have been bugged by the constant interruptions, but not Sam. His smile was as bright watching her interact with her fans as it had been when he first saw her. His feelings for her had never changed. He still loved her more than anything and it made him happy to see that others loved her as well.

By the time Will returned to the table Xavier had a couple shots warming his belly. The clap to his shoulder caused pain to flare up but thanks to the miracle of tequila it didn’t bother him much. In fact he might be able to go another round if anyone decided to cause shit. “Your nose,” he said after he said to double their order, dark gaze fell upon the blond’s features. Without saying anything else he laughed heartily and shook his head, absolutely amused. “Would have done the same thing. Fuck the ER. Sit there for hours when it’s better to handle it yourself.” 

Their drinks around, sloshing on the table because he picked it up without a care. That was how he lived life for the most part. Had to keep it somewhat together at work but after hours he did as he pleased and right now he needed to get a few more drinks in him before he felt normal again. “What part of the city you from, man? I know most of the people who come ‘roud these parts and with a guy your size. You would’ve stuck out.” The swig you took from the beer cleared half the stein, easily. “I’m Xavier. We probably done the introduction bullshit before but after a few knocks on my head can’t say my memory’s the best.”

Will smirked when Xavier commented on his nose but only shrugged. With his ability to heal faster than others, the ER was always a bad idea. He didn’t exist to the government anymore, and William wanted to keep it that way. He liked his solitary life on the side of the mountain an hour outside of town. He didn’t really want any of that to change, despite the fact that sometimes the solitude got lonesome. This sojourn into town would likely be enough to last him several years. All he would need to do was look in the mirror and see his nose to remember why town was a bad idea. 

He took his seat and reached for the beer when it was set in front of him. He thanked the guy that gave it to him and turned his attention back to his new friend. “I’m not,” he admitted. “I live up the mountain a bit. I needed a few things in town so I ventured down. That’ll teach me, won't it?” His truck was full of odds and ends he needed. Tools, some food, clothing. Nothing he couldn’t have ordered. Lesson learned. “I’m Will, it’s nice to meet you, Xavier. Thank you for your help back there.” He was sure they had introduced themselves before but a lot had happened in a short period of time so he wasn’t completely sure. “It’s lucky you were there... It would have taken longer to beat the shit out of those guys.”

“Oh. The chamber. I had a feeling what you meant and I’ve seen that part done lots in movies but it didn’t dawn on me until now that’s how the gun’s loaded. Which is stupid because it’s the only logical explanation but it goes to show how little exposure I have to actual weapons.” He hated he admitted this to her. Acacia knew her way around a gun, that was clear, and here he was a bumbling idiot but one who had a chance to watch a very attractive woman show off her skills while he stood by her. And there was such a strong urge to pull her to him after she fired the gun and kiss her against this counter but that might be against the rules. Or something people here didn’t want to see. Still, it didn’t control how hard he got throughout that entire demonstration. 

Henry needed to cool it and he said, crossing an arm across his lower stomach and placing a hand up to his mouth while his curled fingers rested on his upper lip. “Show me one more time.” This was to hopefully help him calm down and not make it known he really liked this. Thankfully the pants he wore weren’t too tight so it wouldn’t be obvious. “What is the right way to stand? And how do you keep your arms?” This would help him, too. He had a long ways to go before he would look like a badass with a gun. 

She chuckled a little and shrugged. “Few actually have that much knowledge around guns. Marines are supposed to know that much.” She missed her job in the Marines, but she liked her desk job a lot as well. It was easy, for the most part, and kept her solid. The moving around had been part of the problem when it came to her relationship with Connor. They just didn’t have the ability to stay in one place and actually get to know each other. So instead they fought. And fought a lot. “Regular civies really shouldn’t so it’s good that you don’t.” It was good for her position in her mission too, but teaching the guy how to defend himself was perhaps one of her stupidest moves thus far. 

She glanced back at him when he asked for a second demonstration, a smile gracing her lips. She would happily oblige his request for another demonstration. “keep your stance natural. Not too wide because you want it to feel normal, but not too closed off either because you don’t want the kickback to knock you off balance. Arm out, but not locked. Again, the kickback will destroy you if you lock your elbow, but not to loose that you end up hitting yourself with the gun when it comes back.” She turned around, cocked the gun and took aim at the target across the way and pulled the trigger. The whole thing took less than a second from the moment her eyes left Henry. She didn’t stop at one round, though. She unloaded the whole clip into the little black and white target before she set the gun down and turned back to her date. “Do you wanna try?”

There were numerous things Chloe liked when it came to getting her motor running, but there were only a handful which really accelerated her arousal and her neck happened to be one of those. While Ronan’s tongue was against her skin Chloe rolled her hips upwards to meet him. To feel him. She sighed, it not too loud but not exactly low either as she wanted him to hear how happy this made her. She thought she had it on silent but the very distinct music from her purse came through and caused her to groan. Not at all happy. She hoped by ignoring it would bring them back because she’ll have to snap at whoever decided to bug her at that moment.
