King Bongo Summer Camp by Moritz Malibu Iv on Mixcloud

I've been working since a year and half on a podcast on Violence Radio named King Bongo. As you know, if you have already listened the other stuff I did, I'm kind of passionate by any genre of music. King Bongo is a monthly mix of african-soul- hip-hop-chillout-kebabo-latino music. Now begins the summer holidays, with BBQ, beach and love stories for everybody. Because of my location, the summer never exist. We don't have any place for BBQ and I don't talk about girls and sand... That's why I had plenty of time and took the opportunity for digging into my collection and build a summer mix for the other people, the lucky ones. If you like it, send me a chipolata by mail. French Yéyé by Moritz Malibu Iv on Mixcloud

I made a show on Violence Radio last year about one of my favorite style, the sixties french pop period. I wanted to bring more than a simple compilation of rareties, so I cut it off by short interviews in between.

Some notes and explanations about the tracks:

Liz Brady - Le Paladium

Liz had a short carreer and this song was her hit. The song talks about a new club in Paris named The Paladium, which still exist nowadays, but much more boring as she described.

France Gall - interview

France has a discussion with her cousin about the singing lessons she takes with a renowned professor.

France Gall - Les Gens Bien Elevés ( Well Educated People)

This song is one of the last of the “Yéyé” period of France Gall, but not the least interesting. The song talks about a heartbreak, where France was quitted for another girl. The way she talks about it is really courteous, until the last word of each rhyme. She doesn’t say this word, but lets guess the listener that it’s a swear word. this song is really funny and cynical, in the opposite direction of the regular lyrics of her carreer.

Dani - La Fille A La Moto ( Moto Shagg)

Dani is not the most popular singer of this period, but she had a lot of good songs. This one talks about a girl and her mororbike. Do we need anything else? No. April March did a cover in english in her album “Paris In April” translated as “Moto Shagg”.

Serge Gainsbourg - interview

Gainsbourg talks about how he changed his mind about the Yé-yé. He was first a jazz composer on the 50’s, and didn’t understood this new sound coming the decade after. But don’t worry, he changed his mind quickly, and wrote 50% of the best tracks in this period for Gall, Bardot, Birkin…

Serge Gainsbourg - Chez Les Yé-Yé (At The Yé-Yé)

I coudn’t made a first Yé Yé playlist without this song. This one is quite special here, because had been written before the musical turn of Gainsbourg. That explains the jazzy atmosphere. In the lyrics, Serge Gainsbourg sings to his girl who had left him for the Yéyé movement, explains he will do anything to bring her back. Check the music video on youtube, he had a fucking knife in his hand when he sings.

Annie Philippe - J’ai Tant De Peine (I’m So Sad)

Annie Philippe didn't have any big success, except this one, composed by Guy Marchand ( another great guy, I will talk about him soon or later in this blog).

Stella - interview

Stella is a sixteen years old singer, known for her parodic songs. She explains that she heard one day a song on the radio, the lyrics was so empty she could do better. After the sixties, she met Christian Vander of Magma, married him, sang in kobaïan and lost her humour.

Stella - Beatnik d’Occasion (Casual Beatnik)

In this song, she makes fun of the youth rich who tried to look like the beatniks. A perennial story.

Sheila - Petite Fille De Français Moyen (French Middle Class Little Girl)

I put deliberately Sheila just after Stella.

In this song, Sheila sings about the life of the rich spoilled girls, and compares it with her life of French Middle Class Little Girl. She argues that she is happy to work to earn money blablabla… Sheila wasn’t this kind of girl in the real life and had the most tractable carreer ever. It’s clearly this kind of girl that Stella wanted to tease.

However, I still like this song.

Jacques Dutronc - interview

Jacques Dutronc was the playboy of the sixties. In this interview the journalist ask if he’s shy in real life and if the succes help to fight that. He answers that the succes doesn’t help but some beers, yes.

Jacques Dutronc - Mini Mini Mini

A funny song about everything mini, from midgets to mini-skirts.

Cléo - Les Fauves (The wild beasts)

Cléo is in the same category as Annie Philippe, short career, one good song. This song is about the sale day and some fighting about pantyhose.

Françoise Hardy - interview

Françoise Hardy is maybe the shyest singer of the Yéyé queens. She explains that she doesn’t think about a carreer, she is just happy to have made a record.

Fun fact number one: In 2014, she still continue to sing and sale a lot of records.

Fun fact number two: Despiste her shyness, he married the most popular guy of the period, Jacques Dutronc.

Françoise Hardy - Des Bottes Rouges De Russie ( Red Boots From Russia)

This is a simple love song, just a beautiful one. You can find on youtube a medley of the french, italian and german version.

Sylvie Vartan - interview

Sylvie explains why she records in the USA (because it’s cool and somebody pays for it) and what it brings to the record (nothing but it’s fun to go to the USA ok?).

If you searching for the best spot in France to find rare records at the best prices, you have to go to Art Disques in Lyon. The owner said he have the biggest collection in France, and when you enter the shop, you can’t disagree with him. He is the only guy to be able to move between the over filed shelfs in the 30m² of the place.

If I miss Lyon sometimes, this shop is one of the reason.

Cap'n Jazz Collection by Moritz Malibu Iv on Mixcloud

Call it 90’s indie, second wave emo , midwest emo, whatever you want, the history, and I, will keep for sure Cap’n Jazz has the pioneer of a genre. They are not really renowned. They only made a series of Eps during the early 90’s to finally split after the release of their unique album. But, by their creativity, their candidness and their energy, they influenced the last 20 years after.

I will not go on deeper about the band here, because a lot of people did it before me and wrote, in a better english, their story in other places of the internet... even if it’s difficult to find a lot information about them even today.

Anyway, if Cap’n Jazz is so unique for me is because of the other fucking great bands created from it ashes.

So I made a compilation of my favorite tracks of every band (excepted for Flashlight, I didn't find anything...)  , and I did this diagram to help you (and me also...) to understand the chronology better.

Fresh Japan 2013 by Moritz Malibu Iv on Mixcloud

This year 2013 was so fucking good I decided to share my favorite tracks from a bunch of japanese artists I love. The mix, voluntarily limited it to electro pop style, goes from underground producer like Pa’s Lam System to pop superstar like Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

I wanted to bring another vision of japanese music with this mix, and share other sounds than the commercial J-POP with hysterical cosplayed virgin girls you see everywhere.

1.モノポリー (Monopoly) by水曜日のカンパネラ (Wed-camp)

Known as Wed-Camp on via twitter, it was really difficult for a non-japanese reader like me to find information about her. I have fallen in love of this dark techno music mixed to this faltering-teenage-robot-girl voice.

2.Iceburn by Soil and “Pimp” Sessions feat DJ Kentaro

This title is coming from their 10th anniversary album "Circles". Soil and Pimp have tried to find new horizon for their band, and this album is as particular as this sound collage by the national DJ hero Kentaro.

3. 熱帯夜 (Tropical Night) byRip Slyme (remixed by Yasutaka Nataka)

For lack of new Rip Slyme album this year, I prefered to put this remix by Nakata from Capsule instead of the new single "Jungle Fever"... This track was released on "Asobi System" compilation released this year.

4.Fashion Monster by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

I'm not really fond of commercial J-Pop, but I LOVE Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. It was difficult to choose between all of the good tracks recorded in her "Nanda collection" album...

5.Hate by CharismaDotCom

This new duo from Tokyo released the most refreshing debut EP of 2013. The girls you have to follow this year.

6.Bit by Bit by Pa's Lam System

I don't know where he's coming from, but this underground soundcloud producer has his place in this japanese top talent.

7.ワスレナグサ - 夢をみていた - (I was dreaming, don’t forget me) by Meg

I loved her album "Where I am" but I didn't know if Meg could do better. The answer is this track released as a B face of the single KISS OR BITE + SAVE. She (and her army of producer) brings a new vision of J-Pop music, and the album Continue could be the masterpiece.

8.Butterfly by Cuushe (remixed by Kidsuke)

I liked the Cuushe's debut album, I'm also a big fan of the duo Kidsuke ( Kidkanevil and Daisuke Tanabe ) so I couldn't resist to put this remix.

9.Control by CAPSULE

Yasutaka Nakata was EVERYWHERE in 2013. Some people hate him because he is influenced (maybe to much sometime...) by occidental electro music, but he is a really talented dude. And I think he tried to prove it with this really strange "Caps Lock" album. 

10.Radio by Towa Tei feat Yukihiro Takahashi and Tina Tamashiro

Another talented producer from Japan that nobody talks about is Towa Tei. Another type of electro music, another type of japanese madness. The icing on the cake is of course Yukihiro Takahashi (from the Yellow Magic Orchestra) singing on this tracks.

11.Upload by BAKU BAKU DOKIN feat Towa Tei

Released as a single in 2013, it is the only trace of activity of the Baku Baku Dokin. I wanted these girls on this mix, so thanks again Towa Tei.

12.LSD by Trippple Nippples

The strangest band in Japan right now. No need to write anything else.

13.Jyanai by DJ Fumiya feat Tinza DOPENESS

Dj Fumiya (Rip Slyme) debut album was released in the end of 2012, so I cheat a little bit. But this album was so interresting I couldn't forget it.
