safe words are tools used to ensure people can stop a scene at any time immediately for any reason. Many types of play such CNC (rape play). During cnc scenes, often times the “victim” will pretend to beg for the person to stop. If something goes wrong and the person  needs the scene to end, the safe word allows the “victim” to communicate this effectively and clearly so the dom won’t misunderstand. 

In the BDSM scene, many places, such as clubs, will have a set list of safe words. They are usually green, yellow, red, safe word.

green- everything is fine, keep going

yellow- hang on I need a minute, something may be wrong I’m not sure, but let’s pause and check.

red- full stop something is wrong, the scene needs to end. 

safe word-unfortunately, because the scene is so large, there are assholes and predators. in kink clubs, there are dungeon masters who walk around and make sure everything is ok. if someone says red, and their partner does not stop, the person is then expected to say “safe word” to then let the DMs know they need to step in and end the scene because their partner is not. This is extremely rare and may vary from event to event.

If someone ever tells you they do not believe in the use of safe words, I recommend finding a new partner. This means if something is wrong, they may not respect your need for the scene to end. This means the person is not safe. The only time I have ever heard a good argument for this thinking is from a friend who had been in the scene for a long while.

On the morning of May 30, 1921, a young black man named Dick Rowland was riding in the elevator in the Drexel Building at Third and Main with a woman named Sarah Page. Tulsa police arrested Rowland the following day and began an investigation. An inflammatory report in the May 31 edition of the Tulsa Tribune spurred a confrontation between black and white armed mobs around the courthouse where the sheriff and his men had barricaded the top floor to protect Rowland. Shots were fired and the outnumbered African Americans began retreating to the Greenwood District.

In the early morning hours of June 1, 1921, Greenwood was looted and burned by white rioters. Governor Robertson declared martial law, and National Guard troops arrived in Tulsa. Guardsmen assisted firemen in putting out fires, took African Americans out of the hands of vigilantes and imprisoned all black Tulsans not already interned. Over 6,000 people were held at the Convention Hall and the Fairgrounds, some for as long as eight days.

Twenty-four hours after the violence erupted, it ceased. In the wake of the violence, 35 city blocks lay in charred ruins, over 800 people were treated for injuries and contemporary reports of deaths began at 36. Historians now believe as many as 300 people may have died. - tulsahistory.org
