Traditional archery using modern equipment. (but I would love to shoot reconstructed historical bows at some point)

My form and aim look different from Olympic style recurve. I've been shooting that way for 4.5 years so I'm not interested in shooting in any other manner.

Bow of choice: 25lb draw weight PSE Nighthawk (unsighted with no stabilizers or arrow rest)

haha so the new bow that I spent a lot of money on and four months waiting is too heavy for me >:(((

I specifically asked for 25-30lbs because I am short and AFAB so naturally not as strong. but it arrived and says it is 28-38lbs. the guy who made it isn't sure exactly how much it is so now I need to visit my former coach to use his bow scale.

very annoyed. I could have been shooting it yesterday if it was the right draw weight but now I'll have to spend months training to use it properly

have to quit my longsword lessons because of my knee pain :( unfortunately I can't fight without being on my feet and aggravating it, so I guess it's back to archery as the only sport I can handle

but! for good news I bought some wooden arrows and they arrived yesterday (even though shipping was annoying) so I can start shooting with the correct spine when my new bow gets here later

(it's being custom made and there have been a few delays in the creative process so it hasn't gotten shipped out yet)

update! it was thankfully dry (though not during practice the day before) and not too scorching hot which was great since we were outside for around 8 hours per day for the whole weekend

(was I good? absolutely not. out of 20 arrows only three landed on target while the others landed in the dirt in front)

I was shooting with two barebow guys who were somewhat impressed that me with my 25lb draw weight bow and instinctive aiming was able to get anything remotely close to the target

so... I haven't done any archery for two weeks and I'm not sure why? since quitting my weekly classes I haven't bothered to go out shooting at the outdoor range which is really strange considering I have to prepare for a big outdoor competition at the end of the month

of course I want to return to a regular training schedule as soon as I get my new bow, but it's been delayed for around a month so I can't bring it to the competition anyways so I kind of feel no need to practice? is this bad?

#I'm going to be the only person in that division so I don't even need to do good to get a medal #also going to outdoor range increases the chances of seeing someone from my former school #and that would be a super awkward conversation as to why I left #archery #traditional archery #target archery #target practice #archery training #(or lack of)

might be joining a JOP program for the summer.

I quit my traditional archery school because they weren't pushing me enough (we've been working on the same stuff for months even after I basically perfected it) and I felt like the owner didn't value me.

after that I'll try to do solo training in the fall when my new bow arrives. looking forward to teaching myself all the stuff I was expected to know, but was never taught.

#just hope that the JOP won't try to force me to do modern archery #because my shooting style was created by the owner of the traditional school #so like no one else would know how it works #but it's free so at least I won't feel locked into a contract and can leave if I want to #archery #traditional archery #target archery #archery training

I got to bring my bow to school today for a graduation project! (but no arrows because that's against the law)

was actually surprised to have a bunch of people I didn't know ask cool questions because I never thought it would be something that would interest so many different people

my favourite questions were from some guys who asked about how Minecraft bow enchantments would work in real life, which led to a discussion on the different types of modern and historical shooting!

when too many people from your traditional archery school show up to outdoor league night at a different range so you lowkey just leave ✌️

#there were six of us to one target face it was getting overwhelming #and people kept interrupting me when I was calling out arrows and doing the math so I kept having to restart #someone was making jokes about “since there's 13 of us here we should just take over the place because we're better” like no we're not dude #anyway so I just walked out of there because why waste your time doing something you don't want to do #archery #traditional archery #trad archery #target archery #target practice #archery range

considering leaving my weekly archery classes for the summer, maybe for longer because:

I've gotten to the point where I feel like I barely make any progress every week (stuck in the 'better than beginner, worse than advanced' section of the complex world that is intermediate level)

There's only so much my instructor can do to challenge me because all we do is work on form

I feel like the owner of the school doesn't value me as a student of nearly five years who medalled at provincials and will again soon (she has ghosted me countless times and does not share my accomplishments with the rest of the school when I asked her to)

University starting and I don't know how my schedule will change

but I'm conflicted because I do enjoy learning from my instructor who is the nicest guy ever, it's just his boss who is now a problem

just signed up for beginner longsword classes over the summer at a HEMA place!

(and for those wanting updates on my quarterstaff stuff, my archery instructor has still not confirmed what days would work... so it's probably never going to happen at this point. and also the HEMA place might be able to teach me later)

#the only thing i am slightly worried about is how much my knee would hurt #but i'm unfortunately used to it hurting when i'm shooting #the classes are only one hour a week for two months so it should be fine #longsword #hema #historical european martial arts

The outdoor range has started their league nights. Luckily it wasn’t super warm tonight (unlike on Monday which was unnaturally hot for Canada in early May) so at least I didn’t have to deal with heat headaches!

I’m glad that I’ve made progress with the longer distances, considering I’ve been mostly shooting indoors for the past five months. I guess that proves that better technique helps at any distance!
