for someone who spends most nights under the gentle light of the moon, nayoung thinks she should be more excited about this night. everyone else sure seems to be. it feels like the kind of night that should belong to her, the way the moon always sort of does. but as she's standing by the edge of the crowd surrounding the bonfire, nayoung feels sorely out of place.
she's always loved the moon in quieter ways. not like this — too loud, too bright, shared between too many voices at once. it's as if everyone suddenly is in tune with the moon tonight, as if it hasn't been around every night before this one.
perhaps it's childish of her, the way she feels as if the other students are imposing on something that's hers. though as she's gazing up at the moon, face drowning in the unfamiliar red glow, she can't help but feel like this is wrong. the moon hangs too heavy in the sky — bleeding light instead of casting it. nayoung has spent years beneath the familiar, comforting glow, and yet tonight, it feels like something else entirely.
she doesn't remember when she stopped hearing the voices around her. somewhere between the laughter of the bonfire and the chanting of the ritual, nayoung's attention drifted elsewhere — towards the trees, towards something quieter.
it's not until the light of the bonfire has disappeared far behind her, the many voices of the other students barely audible through the trees, that nayoung realizes she left. it hadn't been a conscious decision — on the contrary, it's almost as if... could it be the moon calling her? is that the reason behind this pull she feels, taking her deeper into the woods, away from everyone else? nayoung's lips tug into a smile at the thought that the moon would want a private audience with her, rather than the celebration put on by everyone else.
the forest is familiar. nayoung has spent enough time here to know it like the back of her hand — she knows exactly where to step without thinking. so she closes her eyes, allowing the pull of the moon to guide her along the path.
she doesn't know how long she's been walking, eyes firmly shut, following the pull, when she comes to an abrupt stop. her eyelids remain closed as she stands there, brows furrowing in concentration as she attempts to focus on what's ahead of her — what caused her to stop. it's almost certainly what had pulled her in.
it could be the redretch. for a moment, nayoung feels stupid — for having wandered off this far alone, without even as much as a discordant bell on her. but something doesn't line up. whatever is ahead of her doesn't feel violent or dangerous, not in the slightest. it feels... known. almost as if she's being called home.
once she opens her eyes, she's not surprised to find herself on the path from her dreams. and in front of her is not the redretch, but the all-too-familiar shape of the rabbit she's known through her dreams most of her life. it's looking at her the way it always has — as if it's been waiting.
and something in her chest settles, as if her heart has finally found what it's been reaching for.

conviction? or is it, perhaps, drive, that juwon ultimately lacks when it comes to spell casting. maybe that's why she enjoys potion crafting the most. you already have what you need in front of you, and if you are missing an ingredient, you just go out and find it.
spell casting involves meaning, and juwon finds it rather hard to do so when all she sometimes feel is lost. it must be why she's taking spell casting with professor ahn for the second time this year. perfecting this spell in time for the hunt could make or break her chance at being useful.
nayoung's reply takes her out of her thoughts and juwon half-heartedly rolls her eyes. she puts down the paper in front of her and wiggles her fingers at the younger, menacingly with a dash of silliness. "oh yes, you should be scared. a lot of dangerous spells out there," she holds back a smile as she attempts to be serious.
she moves a bit to the side to make space for nayoung on the boulder all while flipping through the pages of her notebook, finally coming upon a spell that indeed, turns someone into a snail and showing it to nayoung, like a kid with a toy. "you truly never know what will happen the next time...pft-" she sputters into laughter before it dissipates into a heavy sigh.
"i'm trying to make it rain," she said, flipping back her notebook to the spell she's trying to perfect. juwon then nudges nayoung by the shoulder. "you think you can ask the moon goddess to bless me with something torrential?"
once firmly seated next to juwon on the boulder, nayoung rolls her eyes, though her playful grin lingers. "sure, but i think they'd have to be in the right hands to be dangerous." she raises an eyebrow at the older, the corner of her lips still turned upwards.
she's about to keep teasing when the notebook is turned towards her, causing nayoung to pause, eyes scanning over the words on the page. it doesn't take long before she bursts into laughter. "no way you just happened to have that spell somewhat readily available." she giggles, gaze lifting to meet her friend's once more. "is it bad that i almost want you to try it? just to see if you'd actually be able to do it."
her smile turns softer at the older's obvious frustration, then tilts her head at juwon's request. truthfully, nayoung has no clue whether it is said merely in jest, though she considers it all the same.
"i don't know if i'm important enough to make requests like that," she confesses. "buuuut, if you turn me into a snail, maybe that would motivate you to make it rain? to help me live my best snail life?" she giggles.
"surely you would want that for me, right?"
the woods feel different during the day. not a bad different, not in the slightest — these are still the same woods nayoung has been searching for, for what now feels like most of her life. it's just... different. perhaps it's the lack of moonlight filtering through the trees, instead replaced with the much warmer and brighter sunlight.
it feels quieter than she expected it to be, considering it's early in the afternoon. she's still not entirely sure just how many students the school even has — there's limits to how much she's been able to explore in the mere eighteen or so hours she's been here. still, part of her had been expecting the surrounding woods to be... livelier? not that she's complaining — on the contrary, she's happy to have the woods seemingly for herself, as she gets reacquainted with the place she's seen so many times in her dreams.
she's walking down the all-too-familiar pathway, not quite sure how long she's been wandering around, when something catches her attention. it's brief — nayoung only catches it in the corner of her eye — but it's there: a flash of white. whatever it is, it disappears behind some bushes, gone as quickly as it appeared.
nayoung's steps still, breath catching in her throat, as she stares in the direction of the movement. she's seen this before. she knows that flash of white — she'd recognize it anywhere. could it really be...?
taking a deep breath, she wills her feet into moving forward, taking careful but deliberate steps towards the bush, where some leaves are still rustling. she pauses once she gets close enough, taking a moment before breaking the silence.
"hello...?" she feels somewhat stupid, talking to what may just be some random forest animal in a bush. but, at least there's no one else around to hear her. "is there... anyone there?"
TRUTH OF PURSUIT / for @twitterpxted set one and a half years ago
despite all the things that she couldn't remember, juwon knows one thing. spell casting really isn't her strongest suit. she much rather sit with her cauldron and trial and error with her mixture. at least that, it's within her control. she's been hellbent on finding some sort of solution to her discontent of not being useful.
the feeling left some kind of bitter taste in her tongue that she was sure was familiar to her in her limited memories. there were still so many gaps, so many empty spaces where a memory, no matter how recent or distant, should've been and yet only a void of nothingness fills it in. juwon stares at the notes she took during spell casting class.
she's sitting on a mossy boulder, one of her favourite spots in the vast forest that neighbours the school. it was one of her more usual hiding spots, if you could call it that, where she thinks no one would find her. just because it was out of the usual trails, doesn't mean she's completely invisible.
oh..invisibility...maybe she could craft a potion for that instead of learning the spell. juwon sighs and held up the paper in front of her, muttering the spell's phrase with no conviction whatsoever.
she startles when the leaves to her right rustles and gave way to a now familiar face.
"you could've called out to me or said something first, nayoung. i thought i would have to use a spell," juwon says although she knows that nayoung knows her spell casting efforts would be futile.
spell casting for dummies — with @moonmancy
the vast forest surrounding the school is definitely nayoung's favorite place to be. in the time she's been at the school, she'd be willing to bet she's spent more time out here than she's spent in her room. there's something freeing about it, especially on moonlit nights.
when she didn't find juwon in their room, nayoung didn't have to think twice about where she might find the older. not that she necessarily needs juwon for anything, no — the simple truth is that nayoung is just bored, and juwon seems like the perfect target for her attention on this particular day.
while not very close in age, nayoung finds that she enjoys juwon's company, seeks it out even — proven by her current stroll through the forest, towards the boulder she knows she'll find her roommate at. the main thing they have in common, she finds, is their love for the forest. which, in nayoung's eyes, is practically enough to make them best friends.
and, sure enough, as she enters the small clearing holding the boulder, leaves rustling as she pushes some branches out of the way, her gaze immediately rests on exactly who she was looking for: nam juwon.
the older is speaking, no — chastising her — as soon as nayoung comes into view, and the younger can't help but chuckle. she scrunches her nose as she looks down at her friend.
"oh no, i'm so scared," she says dryly. "well..." she trails off, tilting her head to the side as if pondering. "actually, maybe i should be. with your... erm, skill, you might actually end up turning me into a snail or something." she makes an attempt to sound scared, though the wide grin on her face betrays her.
"so," she starts, sitting down on the boulder next to juwon, "you're practicing your spells? anything i can help with?"

Once in university she read a story about the Moirai⎯ Greek goddesses meant to personify destiny.
They were daughters of the Nyx, goddess of the night, and three sisters spun threads meant to symbolize the fate of one's own life. The youngest, sat at the spindle spinning the thread. The middle sister measured the thread and determined how long (or short) one might live. Then there was the eldest, who's cutting of the string was meant to signal the final fate⎯ death itself.
She still thinks of the story on occasion. Sisters sat around thread, determining fates of strangers. She and Nayoung aren't all that different from them after all; instead of thread they sit beside balls of yarn, but the outcome is still the same. They sit and discuss kismet, and the providence of others. It plays all the same.
"Last night I dreamt about a man being attacked by a pack of crows. He was in Apgujeong, y'know dressed up looking great, and they all just kept swarming him and pecking at him." Eunjae sighs, her metal knitting needles clacking together in her hand as she looks up in thought. "His body looked familiar, but I couldn't see his face."
She turns her attention, back to the yoke of her sweater. It looks too big, again. She has half a mind to take it apart and start from scratch, but there's a certain amount of effort involved in the action that she can't be bothered to commit to. Maybe she'll just give it away to someone who can manage to fit it.
"Do you think it's a celebrity scandal?" She doesn't bother to look up this time as she speaks. "Maybe another male celebrity got into a bunch of trouble and the crows are netizens?"
SEVER THE BLIGHT | ft. @moonmancy
reluctant as she may be to admit it, nayoung has a tendency to get fully consumed by whatever she is doing — much to the chagrin of anyone attempting to talk to her.
her full attention is turned towards her crochet hook (her custom crochet hook, at that —she'd commissioned a full set with a gorgeous, purple resin handle about a year ago, and yes, the full set is most definitely among her most prized possessions), her hand moving almost mechanically as she continues working up her newest project. the pattern is in her head by now — this is the fourth time she's making this very same cardigan, after all. this time, her color of choice is a muted lilac, which is about how cheery nayoung is willing to go for her spring wardrobe.
she's about to start a new row as eunjae's voice reaches her ears, though it takes her a moment before she's able to register the words — something about a scandal, involving celebrities. which, admittedly, is a topic it would be hard for nayoung to care less about, so perhaps it's understandable that her brain had been filtering out the one-sided conversation.
"what?" she mumbles, finishing off the first double crochet of the new row before lowering her work, resting her hands in her lap. nayoung lifts her head, gaze landing on eunjae next to her, who looks oddly concerned considering the topic of discussion is supposedly a celebrity scandal. or something like that. the older woman isn't looking up as she continues talking, and it's at this point nayoung realizes there's definitely parts of this that she completely missed.
"wait, sorry, say that again? i was, uh..." her words momentarily trails off as she lifts a hand to vaguely gesture towards her half-finished cardigan. "so focused on remembering the pattern that i missed like, probably half of that. at least the most important parts." she softly pushes her work further down on her lap, signaling that her roommate now has her full attention.
"what was this about crows again?"
hiii this intro is so late omg i unfortunately have been playing overwatch instead of working on it but yes hi i'm lian (28, she/her) and i'm here with the whimsical bae nayoung the moon witch!! her profile / background info can be found HERE, but i'll leave a tl;dr under the cut along with some plot ideas! i'm super excited to be here with you all!! leave a like if you'd like to plot and i'll suddenly find my way into your dms ♡
i. BACKSTORY.
born into a witch coven focused on nature-based magic in jeju island. has two moms (her bio mom being a witch who married her familiar while still pregnant with nayoung), and doesn't know who her dad is but also has no desire to ever find out tbh
grew up mostly sheltered from the rest of the world, very rarely went outside of the where the coven resided in a rural area of jeju island. homeschooled by both her mothers — her witch mom teaching her about everything magic, while her familiar mom (who was raised among humans) taught her other subjects like math, korean literature, science, history etc etc (most of which nayoung found boring as hell i will not lie)
was always fascinated by symbolism, omens, dreams and stuff from a young age. especially has always been focused on this one recurring dream she's had for as long as she can remember. it started out with vague memories of dreaming of moonlight shining through tree branches, though she became more aware of the dream, and it became more frequent, as she grew older until the point where she learned to control her own movements and be fully aware in the dream. it was around this time that she started seeing a white rabbit appear in the dream. only occasionally at first, but then it starts showing up every single time, and it's at this point that she becomes certain that the rabbit is her familiar
as much as she loves her coven and her family, nayoung felt no pull towards her familiar in jeju. she was sure that she has to leave in order to find her familiar. she was 19 by the time she left, headed to seoul to stay with her adoptive mom's younger brother while figuring out where she's headed in life.
nayoung quickly found out that she does not enjoy the big city life. she hated not being able to see the stars due to the pollution, and hated the constant noise and people around her. though the dreams of the white rabbit became even more frequent after moving there, which made her reluctant to immediately return home, as she felt she was somehow on the right path.
since she hated the actual city so much, nayoung started hiking and exploring wooden areas outside of seoul, sometimes staying several days at a time. she preferred wandering around at night under the light of the moon, allowing the moonlight to guide her.
after a few months, she came upon a section of the woods that looks exactly like the one she's been seeing in her dream her whole life. at this point, she knew she was in the right place, though the rabbit was nowhere to be seen. she kept walking further in, hoping the white rabbit would be waiting for her. but, instead of the rabbit, what she found was the school.
she's been at the school for about a year and a half now, and nayoung is sure she's exactly where she's meant to be, and that one day, she will cross paths with the rabbit she's been searching for her whole life.
ii. PERSONALITY.
first of all she's a pisces... it explains so much about her i promise
very imaginative, curious and intuitive, comes across as someone who's got her head in the clouds (lowkey she does)
tends to say things that can be a bit odd or off-putting like idk she just be saying things that don't always fit the situation but she's cute while doing it so ppl mostly just let it slide <3
very very reliant on visions, symbolism, fortune telling and other forms of divination. fully believes anything that is foretold
kind of restless and all over the place.. does not sit still for long. tends to be doing like 5 different things at once
the few times she does sit still she's either reading, crocheting or embroidering something
iii. PLOTS/CONNECTIONS.
this is gonna be so half-assed i apologize in advance
another witch who's still looking for their familiar. they bond over the yearning?? nayoung would probably offer to do a tarot reading to find out more about their familiar
speaking of tarot readings, she loves doing them in general so she's always willing to do readings for anyone who wants her to!! and she tends to be very spot on, especially if done under the moonlight
very much a nightowl and she loves wandering the woods, any fellow late-night wanderers??
someone please help her with potions i fear she might fail the subject cuz she's so bad at it... help her!!
i want her to have beef with someone i don't have anything specific in mind but like maybe someone finds her off-putting idk. i just want her to have an enemy because i personally would love it
any casual romance-y plots... nayoung is bi and down to clown tho i don't think she'd be very committed to anyone she gets involved with.. keep in mind she's 21 (22 next week!!! pisces queen!!!) so i'd only want anyone who's below 25 for this plot
fellow crafters... or anyone who commissions something from her maybeee she makes a lot of her own clothes so maybe she'd be willing to make something for other ppl as well!!
idk this is all so ass i'm sorry we can brainstorm... pls plot with my babygirl 🙏
