Got into a discussion about emergency response at a professional retreat recently and everyone was going on and on about agility, and I was like, "Okay but what about contingency?"
And they were like "What?"
And I was like, "Agility isn't the ultimate form of preparedness. Contingency is. Agility still requires you to flounder and figure out a solution in the moment, but if you have a contingency plan, all you have to do is implement it."
And they were like "But you can't make contingency plans for every situation!"
And I was like, "Yeah, you basically can if you just identify all of your basic dependencies and contingency plan around the loss of any dependency," and then I gave a few examples.
And they all stared at me like I'm an alien.
Anyway, that's how I figured out I'm Batman-coded and also learned how Batman must feel talking to supposedly professional superheroes who never bothered to run disaster scenarios until I pointed out that it's insane that they don't already have a plan for if Superman turns evil.

Good parents Jack and Maddie crying as their baby boy goes off to college. They've turned off the portal and are in the process of correcting their initial findings so everyone in town tries to avoid them otherwise you will be subjected to the new findings which mark ecto entities as sapient and therefore deserving of rights or gushing about how Danny is off to college since his small business pays so well. He did so well he rejected the scholarships from Gotham University because he said it would be better going to someone who needs it and they did such a good job raising him because look at how successful and generous he is!
The business in question is more of a cheat since being king of the infinite Realms means he is fluent in any language to exist. Safe, dead, or extinct the status of a language doesn't matter to him. With Technus's help he sets up and online portal where people can submit pictures or copies of stuff for him to translate at a premium price. He refuses to take any money from the fruit loop and the money he learns will go towards his clone's schooling when she gets to that point. Right now she is using it for her travels and sending them postcards.
People who claim his translations as their own get black listed with a huge fee coming out of their bank account for the breach of contract. He is trying to keep his business on the down low so those breakthroughs that get on the news are not what he is looking for. His main demographic is rich snobs with private art collections. What Danny doesn't know is that his main customers are the Justice League.
There are some clues but he kinda ignores them. Like when a document submitted is a summoning ritual he sends back a partial translation since the summoning is not good (there are worst beings they could summon but it will still be a hassle) however revealing knowledge of the banishment is harmless.
Gotham cultists hate him because they know he can translate the whole document/book but all of their attempts to trace the sage of tongues (trying to give invisobill kinda vibes) they find a dead end. They try submitting from different computers, locations, routers, anything, but just end up giving Danny more money lol
The Justice League is almost in tears because the jusyice league dark could not agree on the translation of the banishment ritual and everything they tried before had failed.
His favorite translations are the stories that give alien vibes. They talk about certain structures (he thinks it might be structures) as if they are common knowledge. Unknown to him those are Kryptonian fairy tales that Lois submitted. She didn't want to give Jon a funny accent so Clark can read them in Kryptonian while she does the English.
Duke having a hard time with an assignment, sends an inquiry asking if he offers homework help (he wouldn't be using it for career advancement which is against the terms of service BUT he would be claiming it for points so he asked) and that is how Tim finds out about this sketchy website that can translate anything. Danny feels the sincerity and sleep deprivation in the inquiry so he replies back "I admire your courage and will do you a solid but only if your promise to sleep a minimum of 8 hours. I'll know if you don't and snitch so go to sleep 😴" The translation is attached and already in the format his teacher requested.
Steph: How is he gonna know?
Duke: Idk but he is a life saver!
Tim: Duke, did you just sell your soul for a homework assignment?
Duke: Let me sleep and then we'll see what happens 🥱
Tim is driven crazy because he needs to know who is behind the website. And also because Constantine was kinda in the area and said no. Duke has his soul even if he doesn't sleep, lucky bugger.
Tim feels like the world is conspiring against him when it sends the cutest distraction in one his gen ed courses. He will date the cute guy AND solve this mystery out of spite.
Danny has always known he's adopted. His parents never really hid it from him. According to them they found him on one of their ghost hunting trips in the woods bleeding out with no one in sight.
The rushed him to the hospital where countless nurses and doctors rushed him to the emergency room. Other than the bleeding there were countless other wounds and scars that needed to be treated along with the stabbing. During his treatment Jack and Maddie were explaining the situation to cops and social workers however when they tried to find his file they found nothing as if he never existed at all.
No one knows what happened to Danny. As far as the doctors police and social workers could guess is that Danny escaped from somewhere dangerous and they hunted him down but didn't bother checking if he actually died. During their time there Jack and Maddie became insanely attached to the child that looked at them curiously with some weariness and slowly warmed up to them. According to dad the night Danny ask them to hug him to help him fall asleep was the night they knew for certain that they were taking him home.
Danny believe them and never bothered searching for his biological parents since he was pretty certain that they weren't good people or the kind of people he wants to be associated with that was until his past came crashing down.
With assassins appearing in Amity park calling him Prince and grandson of the demons head trying to kidnap him and take him back somewhere with the vigilantes of Gotham appearing out of nowhere as well and his parents becoming more wary of the assassins and vigilantes to the point of suggesting that they take a vacation somewhere secluded was sending alarm bells to Danny's head
So he went to the only person that could solve this mystery.
Wes.
Wes figured out he was phantom as soon as he saw him in both forms. That along with some other mysteries makes Wes the only option Danny has as to figure out what's happening and the only one that knows about his phantom identity.
With the two boys looking coming face to face with assassins secret organizations and the justice League what will the encounter and what sort of trouble will they get tangled into? And will this evolve into something more?

The Justice League has had Red Huntress on their list of people to recruit. Yet, they were told to wait because of Constantine. He said that Ghosts are not what they think, and recruiting Red Huntress before Constantine reaches out to Phantom could have dire consequences.
If Constantine is right, then Phantom is a Protector Spirit. And he will need to learn more about Protector Spirits to get Phantom to join Justice League Dark BEFORE the Justice League recruits Red Huntress.
From what the Hellblazer has learned from other Ghosts and such, Phantom is a Protector Spirit that is dangerously close to abandoning his role.
A Protector Spirit that abandons its role is incredibly dangerous. As a Protector Spirit keeps the worst of the worst at bay with just their presence alone. And if a gate to the Infinite Realms has no Protector Spirit nearby, then malevolent Ghosts will come rushing through the gate and cause a lot of destruction wherever they go. Once those malevolent Ghosts are in the living world, they get stronger and more confident. The only way to get those malevolent Ghosts back into the Infinite Realms is with the Protector Spirit that they feared to beat them back into the gate they came from.
Constantine was about to go and recruit Phantom and help the Protector Spirit move the gate, he hears that Red Huntress has been recruited, in front of Phantom, who had quickly run away soon after.
Now they need to find Phantom soon, as in less than a day, the Lingering presence of the Protector Spirit will fade from the gate he was guarding, and then they will be under the constant attacks of malevolent Ghosts because of the Justice League being to impatient.
The rhythmic, sharp clack-click-clack of stilettos echoed down the clean, cement hallway of the compound. The sound was precise, unhurried, and entirely devoid of hesitation.
Dr. Moore didn't look at the security cameras tracking her every move. She had no need. As her heels beat steadily against the polished linoleum, she adjusted her grip on the wooden clipboard cradled in her arm. Pinning the lapels of her tailored blazer together was a small, unassuming silver bar. It bore no crest or flashy logos, just a deeply engraved title: Chief of Operations & Research.
She reached the heavy, reinforced steel doors at the end of the corridor. The biometric scanner flashed green with a soft, compliant chime, and the doors parted down the middle, retreating into the walls with a pneumatic hiss.
The conference room inside was cavernous, sterile, and suffocatingly quiet.
Dr. Moore stepped inside, her eyes immediately locking onto the two figures seated at the far end of the massive glass table. She didn't offer a greeting. Instead, she walked to the head of the table, pulled back a sleek leather chair, and set her clipboard down with a deliberate clack.
Across from her sat the architects of the world's most dangerous secrets.
On the left was Lex Luthor. He leaned back comfortably, fingers steepled beneath his chin, a faint, razor-thin smile gracing his lips. His immaculate bespoke suit was pressed, and his bald head caught the harsh fluorescent lighting of the ceiling. He looked amused, like a man who already knew the ending to the book she was about to read.
To his right sat Amanda Waller.
If Luthor was a coiled snake, Waller was a brick wall. Her arms were folded across her chest, her dark eyes entirely unblinking as she tracked Dr. Moore’s movements. She didn't smile. She didn't lean back. Her posture radiated a cold, bureaucratic authority that had broken generals and superheroes alike.
"You're three minutes late, Doctor," Waller said, her voice a low, rich rasp that cut through the room.
Luthor tilted his head slightly, his smile widening just a fraction. "Now, Amanda, let's not stifle genius. I'm sure the Chief of Operations has a perfectly logical explanation. A breakthrough, perhaps?"
Dr. Moore slid into her chair, resting her hands flat on the cool surface of the table, right next to her clipboard. She looked from Luthor’s calculated warmth to Waller’s steel gaze, completely unfazed.
"We engaged in some connections working towards that extent," Dr. Moore said smoothly, tapping the edge of her clipboard with a manicured nail. "But before we look at the progress of this quarter, let's establish one thing. This is my compound. You put me in charge, which means we do things on my schedule and command."
“As long as you are meeting objectives,” Waller stated. Luthor nodded in agreement. Dr. Moore huffed, “Very well.”
Dr. Moore brushed a few stray, cerise-tipped bangs from her eyes, her sharp movements cutting through the tense atmosphere of the boardroom. She grabbed the sleek remote from the table and turned toward the massive, wall-mounted screen behind her.
“If you would indulge me,” she said, her voice carrying the practiced cadence of a woman used to defending her project’s funding, “I will start from the beginning of the quarter.”
With a crisp click of the remote, the screen flickered to life, bathing the dim room in a sterile glow. A presentation deck slid onto the screen, dense with muted video clips, graphs, and photos. She clicked it again, transitioning to an individual slide showcasing a multi-layered graph.
“The first item to note is progress in our research of ectoplasm energy absorption and dispersal,” Dr. Moore continued, gesturing to the graph. “We have successfully mapped methods of scaling power output over different extensions of time.”
Across the table, Luthor leaned back in his leather chair. A slow smirk spread across his face, his eyes reflecting the screen’s visuals. “Does the increased power output still apply in terms of, say… rays?” he asked. His speech dripped with dangerous curiosity and Dr. Moore knew she was getting somewhere.
She met his gaze with a cool nod. “This knowledge has a high capability in contributing to more powerful weaponry, yes.”
Sitting at the head of the table, Waller let out a low, thoughtful hum. Her posture shifted as she leaned forward, the heavy aura of her presence demanding focus. She cut her eyes toward Luthor, then back to the scientist.
“This also has implications against the Supers as well?” Waller asked, her register accepting no nonsense.
Luthor’s smirk widened, a predatory gleam in his eyes as he answered for the doctor. “Small-scale testing has indicated as such.” Dr. Moore nodded in assent adding, “and the further testing has indicated higher radiation output similar to K when crystalized.”
“Color me intrigued and interested, Dr. Moore,” Luthor drawled, leaning to rest his elbows on the table. “What funding does this venture require?”
“I would also like to know the answer to that,” Waller added. “I might be willing to push more funding this way if you are providing results.”

The concrete walls of the compound’s conference room did an excellent job of muffling the outside world, but they couldn't block out the sudden, erratic rap-tap-clack against the door. It was the frantic, heavy-fisted thudding of someone losing their mind. In what way, Dr. Moore was yet to know.
Dr. Moore paused mid-sentence, her hand hovering inches from the digital whiteboard. Everyone’s heads turned to the door, the sound catching the attention it was desperately seeking.
"Excuse me," Dr. Moore muttered, masking her irritation as she strode across the room. She palmed the scanner, and the heavy door hissed open. Standing in the corridor was a young man in a crisp, slightly oversized security uniform. He was clearly a new recruit, judging by the stark white of his unscuffed patches and the sheer, unadulterated terror bleeding through his skin. He was breathless, his chest heaving under his tactical vest.
"Dr. Moore," he stammered, his voice cracking. "We- we have a breach. Something is tearing through our firewalls. The mainframes are melting down."
Moore narrowed her eyes. "Calm down, officer. Cyber-attacks are a problem for the IT department. Why are you-"
"No, ma'am, you don't understand," the guard interrupted, his eyes darting past her toward the two titans sitting at the conference table. He lowered his voice, but the tremor in it was loud and clear. "The system overrides... it tripped the physical containment grids in Sector 4. Specimen Echo_1 is out. It's been released."
The color drained from Dr. Moore’s face. The irritation vanished, replaced instantly by a cold, calculating dread.
She closed her eyes for a fraction of a second, inhaling deeply to steady her voice. When she turned back around to face the room, her professional mask was firmly back in place, though her eyes were hard.
"Mr. Luthor, Director Waller, I’m afraid our session will have to be cut short," Dr. Moore said, her tone clipping every syllable with finality. "An urgent operational matter requires my immediate attention. I will email you the data models and further details by the end of the day."
Waller’s eyes narrowed, sensing the shift in the tension, while Luthor looked vaguely concerned. Neither had time to object before Dr. Moore stepped out of the room. The heavy door slid shut behind her with a definitive thud.
"Move," Moore commanded the young guard, already sprinting down the corridor. As they hurried toward the elevator bank, she reached into the added pockets on her belt, pulled out her comm-piece, and shoved it into her ear. She didn't wait for the person on the other end to greet her.
"Status report, now," Moore barked into the microphone, her heels clicking like gunfire against the polished tile. "Tell me we still have a seal on the lower levels, or god help us all."
Scenes in chapters 1-4 of Liketolaugh’s More Like Home. I tend to imagine fanfics differently depending on the style, and this fic is very grounded and well-thought out so I imagine it in the more realistic style of the Batman/Justice League animated series.
