Love was our sin. I watched as they beat her, I saw the skin on her back tear and bleed. The echoes of the whips hitting her skin and her screams haunts me, I have not experienced a moment of silence since that day. If they had hurt her and left her for me to nurse back to health, I would have been grateful but no, that was too much to ask. She was wrapped in the same fabric that we had our first kiss on, a blue cloth. Although it has so much red on it now, she hasn’t stopped bleeding. She’s in so much agony, I want to protect her but I can do nothing but scream and beg from where I have been tied up. They tie her like one would a corpse, no one listened to my screaming or begging, they all acted like I wasn’t there like I simply didn’t exist. Right before they covered her head, she looked at me one last time and knew it was goodbye. She may not know this, but wherever she is taken, my heart and souls will forever be there with her to love her in a realm where they cannot reach us. 

After what felt like days, I was finally untied. It turns out when your family is the one to expose you for being in love with a woman, you get to stay alive but you have to watch the love of your life tortured and buried. I am being released and my parents try to hold me, to welcome me, like they did not kill me. My mother begins to cry like she was in pain, she does not know what pain feels like. Pain is the death I died when I saw her battered body brought out to be publicly shamed and beaten. Pain is the death I died when I saw the tears run down her face. Pain is the death I died when I saw her bleed and get packaged like a corpse, she was still alive, all she needed was to be helped. Pain is the death I died when I saw her shake and try to fight as they put her in the ground. But the worst pain of all was being tied by her burial site, knowing she was taking her last breath and there was nothing I could do about it.
