I thought we were forgetting tonight.

            That   was   always   the   burning   question   wasn't   it?   She   was   the   last   Dutton   to   really   decide   what   her   life   was   going   to   be   aside   from   a   vet.   Lee   never   wanted   kids   ,   Beth   well…She   couldn't   ,   which   left   Jamie   &   Kayla   now   that   Kayce   had   managed   to   get   married.   A   question   she   wasn't   unused   to   hearing   ,   but   it   still   caught   her   off   guard   when   she   heard   it   none   the   less.   Smiling   ,   she   sat   up   a   little   ,   reaching   for   a   drink   of   her   coffee   in   hopes   of   a   second   to   collect   her   answer.

          ❝You   think   with   all   the   problems   I   got   running   around   here   t'bother   with   findin   a   man?❞   Her   answer   was   casual.   Brushing   it   off   with   a   bit   of   a   shrug   of   her   shoulders.   ❝Besides…Can   you   think   of   anyone   that   could   run   with   this   family?   If   ya   do   ,   you   let   me   know.❞

PURE amusement reflects in her eyes as she watches Kayla hesitate. She knew it would catch her off guard. "Listen, I didn't need your brother running around the reservation professin' his love but...here I am." she teasingly boasts with a laugh. With Kayla's commentary, Monica quirks a brow and purses her lips. "Didn't think I could." she proudly muses.

          The   last   thing   John   wanted   was   Tate   ending   up   in   any   of   his   business.   It   was   no   place   for   a   boy.   On   that   he   &   Monica   agreed   on.   He   also   ,   while   hating   the   result   ,   understood   why   that   boundary   had   been   set.   It   didn't   change   that   he   missed   his   grandson.   It   only   gave   him   something   to   work   toward.   Now   that   ,   that   was   something   he   knew   he   could   do.   He'd   been   doing   that   all   his   life.

          Her   words   sting   ,   but   they   aren't   completely   unexpected.   One   thing   he's   always   admired   about   the   woman   standing   across   from   him   ,   was   her   undying   dedication   to   protecting   Tate.   There's   a   silence   between   the   two   of   them   ,   before   a   tired   breath   leaves   him.   Hand   reaching   out   to   brace   himself   against   the   fence   nearest   to   him.   Taking   a   moment   to   make   sure   his   words   come   out   right.

          ❝Yeah   well   ,   on   that   part   you   &   I   agree.❞   Another   pause   follows   ,   words   trying   to   form   that   won't   sound   like   an   attack.   ❝It's   not   all   like   that   ,   not   all   the   time.❞   Immediately   logic   points   out   how   dumb   of   a   thing   to   say   that   was   to   say.   Of   course   it   always   happens   here.   The   was   the   whole   problem.   ❝All   I'm   askin   is   for   a   chance   t'know   him   Monica.   So   I   can   know   the   young   man   I'm   tryin   t'save   this   for.❞

EYES narrow almost right away to his assertion. She finds herself scoffing, shaking her head.

"Y'know I--don't know you very well John. But I do know the type of man that Kayce's become...despite you."

Damn...she knows that was a cruel thing to state. But, many are the long nights she's sat awake with Kayce, cradling him, tending to his sweat filled brow. She does feel callous sayin' what she had, but when it comes to Tate, his safety and well being, and upbringing for that matter...that isn't something she's willing to compromise on. "You're not savin' it for him." Monica insists.

"Don't try 'n guilt me like that. You're savin' it for yourself. Your reputation." whether or not that's wrong, she's willing to bet it's at least 70% accurate.

            Summer   camp   with   the   herd   was   always   Kayla's   favorite   time   of   year.   For   just   a   little   while   ,   everything   could   at   least   seem   to   be   at   peace   in   her   family.   Something   that   rarely   happened   for   them   ,   for   a   nice   long   list   of   reasons.   But   for   just   a   couple   months   out   of   the   year   ,   Kayla   could   ignore   all   the   things   she   could   do   very   little   about.   What   made   it   better   ,   was   now   Tate   &   Monica   were   both   getting   in   on   the   fun   &   relaxation.

          Kayla   had   seen   the   improvement   in   Tate   almost   right   away.   It   was   amazing   what   a   little   bit   of   nature   could   do   to   heal   the   soul.   Tate   was   going   to   be   just   fine.   A   lot   of   people   in   the   family   might   rightfully   worry   ,   Kayla   could   see   after   only   a   couple   days   ,   that   he   was   going   to   be   just   fine.   Even   Monica   seemed   to   be   making   a   lot   of   progress   here.

          She   had   just   come   in   from   night   shift   with   the   cattle.   Everyone   took   their   turn   with   the   all   nighters   ,   but   Kayla   actually   liked   it   a   lot.   She   liked   getting   to   sing   to   the   cows   ,   &   just   focus   on   what   was   around   her   for   just   a   night.   Sitting   at   the   fire   with   a   hot   cup   of   coffee   ,   she   smiled   when   Monica   greeted   her.   Leaning   into   the   blanket   a   little   ,   she   chuckled   at   her   happy   musing.   ❝I've   been   waitin   for   you   t'say   that   since   th'day   you   met   Kayce   girl.❞   There   was   a   small   sigh   from   her   ,   before   looking   out   at   the   same   beauty   Monica   was.   ❝I   know   whatca   mean   though…Makes   me   wonder   how   people   can   live   anywhere   else?❞

MONICA playfully nudges her, shooting her a playful beam to match. "It's not that I don't love ranch life. I love everything about it. Love helpin' out where I can -- it's..." her voice trails off with a deepened sigh, she knows she doesn't have to explain the nitty gritty - Kayla knows.

"Hey, Speakin' of your brother." Monica turns to face her confidant, eyes bright. "Anything on the horizon for you? When do I get to be an auntie in the Dutton estate?" she prods. "Hell I will wear an ugly maid of honor dress, just for you, any day." she concludes with a smirk.
