Tonight we raise a fire
“So let me get this one straight…”
It had been three days since she and Aleš had reconnected and it seemed like three days since they’d been apart. Not that she was exactly complaining. She’d missed his friendship. More than that, it was nice to have someone around who actually knew her without any of the pretenses.
Digging into the half gallon she scooped up ice cream and plopped it into his waiting bowl as she glanced up at him, urging him to continue his sentence as she divvied up ice cream portions.
“Your friends are completely oblivious to the fact that you and Eliot have a history? They don’t know anything about…”
Picking up a handful of the M&M’s off of the counter top she threw them in the male’s face. Of course, his smirk was intoxicating and she found herself rolling her eyes just to try and pacify him as he caught a couple of the candies in his mouth and chewed.
This was breakfast on a Monday morning, not exactly the best of choices but she didn’t exactly care. As of lately she hadn’t entirely cared about much.
“Weren’t you guys friends when…”
Sure, she’d been friends with Abby and Evie but that didn’t mean that she’d actually shared with them anything about her life. She’d kept them at arms length till they’d made it to college, only telling them the things they needed to know, and nothing personal.
She wasn’t sure exactly how to defend herself to Aleš, the whole thing seemed weird to say the least. The more she tried to figure out what to say to him the muddier the story got. It didn’t help that Aleš was one of the few people who knew the truth about her and Eliot.
“Yeah, but… we weren’t close. I don’t feel like dealing with their questions. If I told them that Eliot and I…”
Feeling a pull at her shirt she turned to look at him, without any of the candies still in her hand. A second later he’d pulled her in closer to him, his arms wrapping around her torso and holding her there. It was an odd feeling still, one she wasn’t quite sure how right she felt about it all, but one she was going with nonetheless.
Having someone want her despite the truths that he knew was like a breath of fresh air. Of course, Aleš didn’t know everything, but he knew more about her than Abby and Evie did.
“I like this whole arrangement. You two not being together anymore I mean.”
He’d always lingered on her a little too long. She’d caught him time and time again staring at her when Eliot wasn’t looking. Though she’d always thought that maybe it was all in her head, as if she’d only imagined it for some reason or other.
With the ice cream left behind for the moment she tilted her head to the side and felt his lips breeze over her neck, lingering in places. She shouldn’t have felt guilty for any of this, but of course there was a part of her that felt like what she was doing was wrong, as if she shouldn’t have been anywhere near him. After all, he and Eliot were still friends, this was breaking code, this was probably endangering their friendship.
“Oh yeah?”
She questioned, teasing, as she closed her eyes and allowed for his lips to find hers as she shut her eyes and requited his kiss. Â
If someone had told her that this is where they would be during their first meeting she probably would have laughed hysterically and called it impossible. Then again if someone had told her then that she and Eliot weren’t one another’s missing pieces it would have been unthinkable to her. then again she’d been just a kid at sixteen.
“You know that he’s probably not going to be okay with this right?”
Checking on their friendship was something she probably shouldn’t have been doing. Aleš had made the conscious decision to not put their friendship front and center when he’d chosen to go home with her as it was. Besides, considering the fact that he was dating her best friend did he really have room to say anything? Why did she even care?
Because there was a part of her that would always worry about Eliot. Just like the fact that there was a part of her that knew that she shouldn’t have been doing anything with Aleš when it was going to hurt Eliot as much as she knew it was going to. It made her uneasy to think about.
“Is this really something we should be talking about when we have ice cream to eat?”
Deflecting her question he let go of her waist and turned back to the counter then, scooping up a spoonful of ice cream and holding it out for her to take a bite of. Yeah, when the truth came out not a single second of this was going to be pretty. She knew that better than anyone else. Eliot was going to be pissed, maybe she should have thought of that before she’d made out with Aleš… okay, before she’d had sex with ales in the alleyway beside the bar… It was a little too late to go back on that one now.
