truth be told, he wants to yell. to rage and tear, to reach for the chaos that ripped his drift partner away and take it for himself. unleash hell on the kaiju. instead, Jason’s found himself drifting through the days empty, hollow, energy not coming to him like he knows it ought to.

sinking to the floor, letting the wall’s friction against his back temper the speed at which he drops, Jason sighed. “There’s no trust in staring someone in the eye.” it’s easy, he wants to say.

“five minutes, huh?” gray-green eyes fix on hers, focusing at a point just between her eyes and holding steady. “not as hard as you think.”

five minutes is a long time for someone to get lost in his thoughts.

THERE’S  A  GUT  FEELING      deep inside her chest,  telling her that maybe…  just maybe,  he needs a better drift partner.  there’s something in the way he talks to her that makes her think she’s not the right person for this job.  not the right person to become his drift partner,  or to even be someone he talks to.  it makes her feel a little bit…  disappointed  –  but more so with herself than with him.  

         she thinks about requesting for a new drift partner,  thinks about going to marshall wayne,  telling him that maybe she’s not the right person for the job.  molly doesn’t mind being just another trainee for however long,  she’s still quite young.  nineteen,   to be exact.  barely out of her teenage years.  but she remembers dr.  thompkins and her words of waiting for him.  being PATIENT.  it makes molly shove all thoughts of wanting to change deep beneath her head.  he’s going to have to find out all about it when they can drift again.

         “   because you’re treating it like a staring contest,   “      she tells him,  a small smile curving up on her lips.      “   to stare at someone,   it’s like…   to really look at them.  but if you’re not really into that,  i guess we’ll just have this staring contest instead.   “      molly smiles yet again.  

“He’s heard worse, trust me.” He’s taken to playing with empty folders, tapping one lightly in his empty hand as they converse. A simple jab of economics in Bruce’s direction paled in comparison to some of the shit heard in the suit, let alone taking a peek at the managed twitter account’s replies. There were hordes of apparently-rabid…. fans? thirsty twenty-somethings? something like that… out on the Internet. Now there was a horror he’d rather not engage with.

“Y’know, I would elaborate, except I hardly think the office is the place for that.” Jason’s grin spreads across his face, no longer even halfway controlled. Two could play at this game, after all, and Jason was no stranger to the back and forth banter that made up flirting. “But I think a case can be made for finding out over dinner.”

THE  THOUGHT  OF  GOTHAM’S  BIGGEST  TYCOON  HEARING   what could possibly be one of the biggest insults to his business is something molly couldn’t really fathom  --  but then again,  the rich are all kind of thick-skinned.  again,  she would  NEVER  say that to bruce wayne’s face.  maybe to jason todd’s yes,  but  NEVER  to bruce’s.      “   well i’m glad he could take criticism well.  but you know,  maybe some kind of distribution of resources could work too.   “      she tries to smile it out,   pretends that she’s not trying to tell jason to tell bruce to give the people his money. 

      her smile disappears from her face when he insinuates  EXACTLY  just what she’s been thinking.  he’s right.  definitely right.  the workplace is no place for an elaboration of some kind of....  date or whatever he wanted to call it between them.  molly almost chokes.      “   huh.  well that was smooth,   “     she inhales deeply and looks around her before she dares to move closer to him just to give an answer.     “   alright then.  i guess i’ll see you later.   “
