- in my canon I think it’s more interesting to look at varric (and Hawke to a certain extent) as people who are, for lack of a better word, centrist. Varric never really wanted to take a side in Kirkwall which ultimately supported the status quo of one sides dominion over the other, and imo that was him failing a lot of his friends. He didn’t pick a side, so a side chose for him. And I think it’s interesting to look at hawke in a similar way too. My hawke was a mage and did support mage freedom, but still saw a use in circles existing. He felt that Templar’s were too harsh but that it was something that could’ve changed with proper reform and “better people for the job”. I have never scarified my hawke in the fade in inquisition mostly for gameplay reasons, but I agree with some peoples assessments about it being thematically cogent for the character, at least in this circumstance. He failed his friends before and he’s not going to again. I think a similar strain can be seen with varrics actual ending (as in his death) in VG. In a twisted way it’s like a narrative punishment for fence sitting for too long. This is still like raw in my mind and not super refined but it’s fun to think about.
- I know I’m biased bc I have a whooooole thing in my head about a post-canon story of several characters, but I’ve seen some people say that fenris should have returned to veilguard as leader of, or at least a part of, the shadow dragons and I would have liked to have seen him again, I honestly think his character being a part of the shadow dragons would have been tragic. Minrathous is a source of so much pain and suffering for him. I could only see it as a repeat of Kirkwall. And yeah obviously in some ways he was improving, but he didn’t exactly have anywhere else to go but up. But frankly he, and everyone else in that city was doomed. There were so many things happening there that were constantly retraumatizing everyone in the main cast. It just was not a place for anyone to place roots in imo. And fenris was dealing with living in a former slaving city, with giant gold statues of slaves literally on the front steps. Fenris going back to Minrathous would be all those feelings doubled. And like to be clear, I don’t think he would be entirely against joining a group that helps free slaves, but I really can only see that as a slow and painful tragedy for him in a city that would only keep beating him down. And I dunno maybe that tragic aspect would fit for a certain version of dragon age that existed once (even tho constant doom and gloom fantasy is not my favorite), but personally I’d want to see stories of these characters being able to heal, and consequently, heal others through their own healing. But that’s just my interpretation.
