How are you doing? I assumed you have already graduated from college? If you havenât yet, then Iâm going to time travel just to kick your lazy ass, real hard. Anyway, I assumed that because Iâve been working really hard right now. Iâm losing (sacrificing) hours and hours and hours of sleep, just to pass all these classes for you. Iâm struggling right now, so I could give you the good life Iâve wanted you to live. You know, like those parents who work so hard just to give their children good futures. And Iâm the mother and you are my child. This truly makes me feel more grateful to my parents, because I, somehow, know what they feel and itâs tough. Plus, the frustrations because I know no hard works from now can actually guarantee you a good life; after all, itâs all on you. This is about you. Iâve started and did, doing and still doing my part now, but you need, and should continue it. It doesnât stop. Life doesnât stop.
Iâm not pressuring you (though it sounds like it), I really am not. I understand, and even if I donât, I will try to understand. If you havenât got your life together yet, itâs okay. You can figure things out. You can work on it, little by little, piece by piece. And eventually, surely, youâll find it, like how Iâve learnt to love myself, like how Iâve clung on my skin until Iâm comfortable with it. I want you to remember how hard it was and how I did it. I want you to always look back to these moments.
I have read a lot of articles of how being in your 20âs will be the best part of your life. I think itâs true. Youâre young yet considered as an adult. That jingles awesomeness and coolness, in my opinion. I may be wrong; maybe itâs not that awesome. Maybe itâs tougher than what I am going through right now, maybe youâre there crawling your way out of it. But remember, you still have a lot of years to figure things out. Slow down, honey. And look at the beauty of your surroundings.
But you know what? I canât wait to be you. Iâve made a lot of scenarios inside my head what your life will be like. And everything Iâve imagined was so ideal and fun. Kind of contradictory of what life is right now. Iâm not saying that now is awful and ugly. Itâs just that I crave a lot of things I still canât have, things I badly want but canât have because this isnât the right time yet. And right time means your time. So please, hun, do me a favor, live my dreams. Promise me to live it for me.
Travel. And explore the Philippines. Every island, every province, familiarize every Filipino languages. Open your eyes and heart. Expand your perceptions; make your mind broader on how you see things. Make your world bigger by making friends in different cities and provinces around and every edge of your own country. Eat food youâve never eaten, every exotic food the place can offer. Make memories, learn and leave a piece of your heart to every place your feet will set in.
Be independent. Rent your own apartment and live alone. So you can do your weird things without the judgement of other people. So you can walk naked without a single care if anyoneâs looking at your belly fats. Be financially independent that you can spoil yourself with things. But no matter how independent you are, always have time for your loved ones. Always look back where youâre from, remember those people whoâve helped you reach the dreams you are living now. Itâs time to return the favor now. Be financially stable enough, you wonât ask your parents and family any help instead you will be the one whoâll help and spoil them with love and things you know they deserve.
Read. Do you still think about all the lives you havenât lived yet? All the worlds you havenât experienced yet? I hope you still do. I know life can sometimes be demanding of your time, sometimes youâll find yourself too caught up with everything thatâs been going on. But, please, please, donât let life make you lose this passion. I love reading, and I wish and hope that you still do. And now that youâve got the money, unlike me who still needs to starve myself for a week just to save money for books, keep buying. Keep collecting. 28-year old Arieh will thank you later for this. A home library, remember?
Live in the moment. I know that life has its ups and downs. Itâs not always sweet and sometimes the bitter and ugly days tend to stay longer than the former, than its supposed to be. But still, live, A, live your life like itâs gonna be your last day. And itâs true what they say, happiness is a choice. Always choose happiness and stop romanticizing your sadness. Laugh every chance you get. Even if there is no chance, then you gotta make your own. Laugh at life, even if youâre the oneâs laughable. Laugh with it. Do not mind people calling you crazy. Because the girl they call crazy is happy and living her life to the fullest. So, be crazy, hun⌠be crazily in love with life.
Stay focus. Unfortunately, life doesnât stop at your age. How awesome it would be to stay 23 years old forever, right? But it doesnât no matter how much you want it, thereâs going to be 28-year old Arieh⌠32-year old Arieh⌠and so on and so forth. Life will continue whether we like it or not, itâs kind of comforting and distressing at the same time, really. It never stop at a certain age, unless the Lord decided that itâs time to go back to heaven, so donât lose your focus. Live at the moment but never ever stop your focus and lose your goals. Thereâs going to be plenty of years to do your things, yes, however, you need to do your duty, you need to pursue your dreams and you need to reach your goals.
Love. This isnât just about having a love-life or having a boyfriend. What I mean by love is a broad love which is everyone and everything is involved. Itâs about your relationship with your family or with your friends. Even with the nature. You need to spread love to get loved. And you should always start with God, and then with life, and eventually when you catch yourself loving God and life, youâll see yourself loving the ugly, the flaws and the noise of this world too. Love easily, hun, take a risk. You may get hurt in the process but that will make you stronger. Thatâs what I learnt from this young age, remember? You are stronger now because Iâve loved someone/something I shouldnât have.
Meditate. This is the most important of all. This is where love and wisdom came from, where your strength came from. Keep the fire burning in your heart. Seek the Lord, deeper and deeper. Meditate and pray, not every chance you get but every day. Be thankful every minute and every second. Always remember, Arieh, we deserve nothing and yet He gave us everything we ever needed and wanted.
If you are reading this right now, I pray and hope that you are living as happy and contented as I imagined you would be. You are beautiful, no matter what. Life may throw you many rocks along the way but Iâm sure you know what to do and how to respond. I love you, A, so much. But not even close to how much love God has for you.
Love, your 18-year old self
