that night sky.
–They say that Onbitaikaiyan loved the moon more than the sun.
… It would be about time for evening prayers by now, wouldn’t it? He shakes his head at the thought, of people emerging from their homes to offer prayers to the moon, whispering their words into flower petals and setting them alight under the cover of the stars.
It’s a practice that seems so absurd to him now. But he guesses it was sort of nice, even if they were praying to nothing in particular. And despite himself, he can’t help but think that some things are just that–sort of nice.
The Nocturne Plains is sort of nice.
He likes to think of it as a place all of his own; back in the army, there was no privacy, even after promotion to general. He often felt like there were eyes on him at all times, but here, he could practice piano in peace without anyone having to hear how terrible he was.
Hien doesn’t have any music, so he supposes he’ll just play another piece from Chopin’s catalog. Brushing off a few ethereal animals from the piano bench, he sits down, when suddenly he hears someone speak aloud. His keen nocturnal vision adjusts, and he makes out the silhouette of a girl in the darkness. “… Neverland?” he can’t help but ask aloud. “What are you talking about?”
She spun around, twirling because there was no reason not to and with the fireflies floating around and the grass bending beneath her it would be a shame not to join their free movements. But with the voice, origin still unknown, spoke up from the shadows of her surroundings Akari slowed to a stop. “Hahi?” As far as she could tell, she was alone. Her eyes had still not quite adjusted to the darkness and she could not see that far into the plains.
Though she could not see the speaker, she still answered. When the shadows asks you something, you can’t quite ignore it. “Neverland is from a book I used to read as a kid. It was an island with fairies and magic and Peter Pan who was like the king.” Akari placed her bag down on the ground, taking out a small lantern and one of her questing bottles as she continued. “Doesn’t this place look like something out of a fairy tale?”
the case of the disappearing meat buns.
≺ ♘ ≻ “Ah, hara hetta…”
His stomach roared and he rested a hand on it to make it stop. He was spent, exhausted from a weird job he was given back in Eoan. Though, just as he had settled in back at his apartment, hungry struck like an assassin hired by an angry ex and he was off again to search for food this time. He couldn’t even be bothered to search for Japanese food stores. Anything would suit him by this time.
So, he paid visit to the near convenience store he’d been frequenting since he got there. They always seemed to have good meat buns, which he would kill for right about now. Okay, not actually; but, speaking of killing, he had come to miss cases. Mysteries; the who dunnits and the last seconds until the bomb goes off. And, if he dare say, he did miss those cases, even if they would be at the expenses of others.
>> “Ah? I-It disappeared! It disappeared!”
Heiji halted all movement, turning to the source of the voice. He approached the front desk where a girl and an old man stared at an empty space between the meat buns in awe. He found nothing unusual about the empty space, aside from the fact there had been an empty space. Judging from her words and they’re shocked expression, something had filled that empty space once before.
≺ ♘ ≻ “What? What happened?”
Wide eyes searched the glass for any hint of the meat bun that had once occupied the place behind it the frame but Akari saw nothing but air. The grandpa, too, stared. It was as if both had been frozen in the exact moment they had witnessed, like the spell that had made the bun disappear also took their time away. Akari was convinced it had to be magic but before she could voice the thought another person appeared before her and the spell was broken.
Turning to face him, Akari grasped for words. “Um.” She reached out a finger towards the glass and tilted her head. “I wanted to buy a meat bun but then it was suddenly gone.” Akari touched her fingertips to her bottom lip, looking up in thought. Glancing over to the old man, she voiced her inquiry. “Does all the food here do that?” After receiving a shake of the head as a reply, she returned her attention to the other person. “Has that happened to you before? This is my first day here.”
that night sky.

The sun had already kissed the plains when Akari arrived, the sky turning orange then purple then black as it dipped further and further below the horizon of bowing grass. Now the stars that had begun to twinkle weakly with the lowering sun shone bright and piercing in the night. The grass began to glow a faint blue as creatures with coats that shone and twinkled like the stars amid black fur started to appear.
Akari stepped further into the sea-like blue and green. The glass bottles she had in her bag tinkled softly with her movement. Although she had agreed to the job knowing that she would be bottling up stars, she had not known how beautiful the place would be. A surge of excitement, bubbling warmth, rose up inside her and propelled her forward into the midst of the plains. Her movements sent a ripple of fireflies up from their hiding places, their lights drifting up and down in the air. Akari gazed up, her job forgotten, and watched. “Is this Neverland?”

A pleasant hum rose and fell over the grumbling noise of the convenience store’s heater. Akari listened to this as she strolled through the cozy aisles. Truthfully, she did not have much money on her but she was curious. With so many people from so many other worlds put into this one the convenience store had to have many different items. The food she had taken for granted might be strange and amazing to someone else. Similarly, the snacks that could be common in one world would be entirely new to her.
The humming stopped as the manager, an older man whose name tag had only the word ‘Gramps’ hand-written on it, got down from his stool to put more meat buns out. Akari approached, smiled, and pointed to a meat bun only to have it slowly disappear. “Eh?” She stared at the place the food had been in. “Ah?” She said. “I-It disappeared! It disappeared!” She exclaimed.

that rise and fall.
@bombniichan
It was strange. The yesterday she had in her mind seemed so close to her. She could extend a finger and brush against the sunset she had watched in her memory, feel the fading orange and purple hues with her skin. The taste of the tea she had drank lingered on her tongue but it was not real. Time had passed, as they had said, but no time had passed at all for Akari. She was still poised for the tomorrow where she would awaken in the warmth of her bed with the muted morning light seeping softly in from her window.
Looking up, Akari gazed at the tall tower that was to be her home. It rose into the sky like a giant’s castle, penetrating the clouds and vanishing into the surrounding whiteness. She walked forward with her head still held upwards. In front of the tower she felt like an ant facing a tree for the first time. Akari could not help her breathless wonder. “It’s a castle in the sky.”
She managed to say before ambling straight into someone else.
