Georgia - Exclusive MixRadio Playlist
Ahead of her headline performance at this weeks SWITCH event, we spoke to Georgia about the tracks she chose for her playlist and what they mean to her...
Fever Ray 'Concrete Walls'. I am a huge fan of The Knife, but this album surpasses anything! This was the most exciting piece of music i had heard for a long time. It is the perfect marriage of darkness and lightness personified in the character of Fever Ray. The production of the album sounds like a Timbaland or Dr Dre production and it excited me how you could hear these influences particularly in Concrete Walls.
Gesaffelstein 'Viol (Original Mix)'. I love Kanye & was really blown away by Gesaffelstein production work on the album. Heâs a major influence on the album
Jai Paul 'Jasmine (demo)'. On my list as one of the most romantic songs ever.
Bjork 'Human Behaviour'. Because the layers and the depth of the song. The lyrics are really beautiful. And the drums are hypnotic.
Timbaland & Magoo 'People Like Myself'. I really love listening to this tune for inspiration and a bit of a lesson in how to produce. I really love the mix of other worldly sounds with a tough hip hop groove.
Japan. 'Ghosts'. During the making of my debut record i was constantly listening to Tin Drum. I really love their sound of twisted funk/rnb elements with the post punk british feel.
Lovebelow. 'Hey Ya'. Outkast are a massive inspiration. When andre brought this song it was so fresh, pop music at its best and quite unconventional. This song is going to be a classic decades to come.
Gnarles Barkley. 'Just a Thought'. I am such a fan of Danger Mouses' production and Cee Lo's voice marriages so perfectly. I love this record.
Missy Elliot. 'Sock it to me'. Cause it sounds so epic. The horns are so powerful. Missy is probably my favourite artist of all time.
Frank Ocean. 'Thinking About You'. I was obsessed with Channel Orange. I think it is one of the greatest new soul/rnb records of the decade. Thinking About You, is a song you could imagine Otis Redding or Bill Withers writing, i never get bored of listening to this song, in fact it only gets better and better.
Kraftwerk. 'Computer Love'. This song and band mean a lot to me. My dad was the biggest Kraftwerk fan and very early on introduced them to me and my love grew rapidly from there. It goes without saying that without this band electronic music would not be the same as it is today.
Amy Winehouse. 'Tears Dry on Their Own'. I miss Amy. She was without a doubt the most amazing singer of my time. I will always remember when i met her and hung out with her for an evening. She was so welcoming and warm. She took a real interest in my drum playing and even said "Georgia, you got your kit set up?" unfortunately i hadn't, but still to this day i think if only i had it set up, we could have jammed!
Kendrick Lamar. 'Money Trees'. When this album came out it certainly raised the bar. What an amazing proper Debut record executively produced by arguably one of the greatest living hip hop producers. This song summed up 2013 summer for me ! I love Kendrick.
Joni Mitchell. 'California'. It always astounds me how one person could sum up a whole scene, feeling and emotion in one song. California perfectly depicts the late 60s/early 70s Californian scene as i would imagine it. I always listen to this song to get inspiration of how to write lyrics. Plus its my mums favourite.
Curtis Mayfield. 'We People Who Are Darker Than Blue'. This song is so incredible. It addresses racism but straight to the heart. No messing around. I was told that Curtis always had the best musicians around him, was an amazing man and was incredible live ! He is a musician i very much look up to.
Glen Campbell. 'Witchita Lineman'. One of the greatest records ever made.
If you like the sound of this awesome selection, then check out Georgia's playlist which includes many other great songs, here: http://mixrad.io/mixes/102013133
And you can catch Georgia playing live at Bristol's legendary Colston Hall this Friday. This facebook event has all the details: https://www.facebook.com/events/722148124553532/
Exclusive interview - King Charles
King Charles is MixRadioâs Artist of the Week - listen to his brand new album âGamble for a Roseâ in full right here > http://mixrad.io/mixes/102264269
Your stage name is King Charles â do you consider yourself the king of anything in particular? If you could be the king of anything what would that be and why?
Iâd like to have an underwater kingdom, something dramatic and severe with a warm coastline. I'd splash around with mermaids in the shallows then discuss territory in the depths with Portuguese men-of-war.
âLoose Change For The Boatmanâ includes some intriguing lyrics: âI got stopped at Terminal 4 the other day, they said I looked like a terrorist at play, I told them to believe itâŚâ Where did these words come from?
It's not exactly a factual account of an immigration drama but a more a journey to hades across the river Styx.
Your press release mentions your love of Bob Dylan. If you had to choose between Electric Bob or Acoustic Bob which one would you go for and why?
The early albums when acoustic are almost spiritual to me but I love electric guitars and exploring different sounds so I wouldn't want one without the other I don't think.
You relocated to LA to record your debut. This time âround a farmhouse near Exeter was your studio home for 5 months with Marcus Mumford (& Sons) on production duties. What did the difference in locations bring to the recording process this time? What was the best thing about recording in both these places?
They were very different experiences , both were very charming and worlds apart. First album in Hollywood was dreamy but I wanted to make a different 2nd record which was less suited to that environment. Being on a farm put me in a suitable mind-set, that wasn't revolving round major labels and famous studios. I think both times I did exactly what I wanted to do and I think location and the surroundings were a large part of that.
Maybe itâs a bit soon to start talking about the next record but you mention youâve returned to many of your original songs on âGamble For A Roseâ. Do you think youâll explore completely brand new songs on the next one or are there other older songs in the vaults youâd like to share?
Iâm keen to have the latest album that I release to be up to date with what I'm writing and thinking about at that time but I like the innocence of old songs adding perspective to a process.
Have you got a favourite noise? Whether itâs an instrument on your record just an everyday noise, what it is that makes it your favourite?
Cello is my favourite sounding instrument and I love the sound of steel on steel like the clanking of the anchor chains when released to the sea floor.

#MondayMotivation
After the strange time zone that is Christmas, when nobody knows what day it is, if any of the shops are open or if itâs time to stop indulging, the new year can be an absolute shocker. And then we get to today⌠Blue Monday. Supposedly the most depressing day of the year, finances are low, winterâs in full swing and pay day canât come soon enough.
No wonder you might still be in holiday mode after last yearâs festivities. Or feeling like your get up and go just got up and went. And not down at all with the âmotivationalâ posters that some of your mates just wonât stop sharing on Facebook.
Letâs sort this out.
Thereâs no better motivator than music. Fact.
And weâve got the mixes to refresh and invigorate you after a well-deserved break and get you fired up in 2016.
Kickstart your own new year with a little motivation to get you on track to breaking through a few barriers and smashing some goals.
Are you ready to find your Alt-pop Groove? Or maybe youâre on point to Get Up & Rock? Weâve got Dance Tunes To Move You, an Indie Boost and your Motivational Electropop right here.
An F5 refresh of five mixes to soundtrack you into the zone - for work, for studying, for sport, for pushing yourself to a place that hurts, for feeling the burn, for getting your head down, for taking it to the max. Get going and enjoy.
What song gets you motivated?
Remembering David Bowie
As we reel from the loss of one of musicâs true innovators, a personal tribute to David Bowie from MixRadio Copywriter Jean-Paul....
I am not Bowieâs biggest fan. I donât have enough âstuffâ to prove it. I donât own all of his records. But maybe I am. I never met him or had the pleasure of seeing him live but heâs been with me my whole life. As someone Iâve respected so much for such a long time, whoâs effortlessly permeated every aspect of culture, how could I not be his biggest fan?
The funny thing is, the times I remember encountering Bowie over the years are not necessarily a catalogue of epiphanies after hearing genius song after genius song. Those moments did happen - I love those songs as much as everybody else and Iâll treasure them. The small collection of my own most memorable touchpoints feel like when Bowie was confounding even his die-hard fans. Typical, really.
When we were growing up, my parents worked overseas in Africa, so mine and my sisterâs musical upbringing had the potential to be less informed than our friends back home in the UK. Western pop music was not an easy commodity to come by in Zambia at the time but of course Bowie managed to make it that far.
Like many 80âs kids, I first saw Bowie in the movie Labyrinth, a film most cinema critics couldnât have cared less about with a soundtrack most music critics wouldnât consider because it was for children. In Zambia it was shown on the national TV station at 4pm every day, clumsily played for half an hour then stopped. Some days it was the same half hour as the day before. Some days the half hour edit didnât follow chronologically and the film was shown several times over. We didnât care as long as we got to sing along with the songs. Being 9 years old and having my imagination piqued and sparked so intensely, Iâd like to think that that was Bowieâs only intention â to fire up young (and old) minds. Iâll never forget what that film means to me and my sister and the adventures in music that followed thanks to David Bowie.
I remember recognising Bowie listening to the Pretty Woman soundtrack (we seemed to have a lot of terrible film soundtracks in our music collection). The Gass remix of âFame 90â was on that tape and it sounded fresh and exciting and new. Not bad for a record from 1975. Even more gratifying was realising it was by the same guy in that puppet movie we kept going back to on pirated video cassette.
Other Bowie moments include seeing âLittle Wonderâ on âTop of the Popsâ â audiences divided, critics confounded and confused. The same with âHallo Spaceboyâ. Watching âIâm Afraid Of Americansâ on the Reality Tour DVD and being blown away 7 years after it originally came out. Loving the fact it was partly a Nine Inch Nails and Brian Eno collaboration. Visiting Hansa Studios in Berlin where the âHeroesâ album was recorded.
For every first listen to universally loved songs like âSpace Oddityâ, âChangesâ, âDiamond Dogsâ or âCracked Actorâ Iâve got another moment in pop culture where David Bowie made me think because he was doing, as always, something different. Thatâs how prolific and powerful his music is.
Even when itâs not necessarily art coming direct from the man himself his work just seems to create joy. Hearing the piano intro from âModern Loveâ in a 2ManyDJs mix at parties in my first flat. Witnessing Greta Gerwig run the streets of Chinatown like a crazy person to the same tune in the movie Frances Ha. Listening to Adam and Joe ramble hilariously about their Lord Bowie obsession. Watching the best episode of âFlight of the Conchordsâ for Jermaine Clementâs insane Bowie impersonation and costume changes. And their Bowie song. They all just make you smile.
Weâve lost an amazing person. Iâll always find a reason to talk about him though. No oneâs really dead if you keep remembering them. Weâve got 50 years of constant, prescient, unstoppable creativity to discuss and riff on. Countless quantities of work from other artists whoâve been heavily influenced by him. The world will never forget David Bowie. Itâs impossible. Which makes me glad.
Keep your memories vivid and stay inspired. Now, letâs dance. Â

Exclusive interview - Big Narstie
Big Narstie is MixRadio's Artist of the Week - listen to his brand new EP 'Base Society' in full right here > http://mixrad.io/mixes/101236887
Here's what the main man himself had to say when we caught up with him...
Tell us about your new EP. What's the deal with it being a mixtape?
My new mixtape, 'Base Society', is basically welcoming you into the BDL movement. I wanted to reach out to the underdog guys across England with talent. I been pushing grime from day so now the light's shining on me. Welcome to my world! I felt I had to give my fans something free for all the support and love they showed me.
Whatâs your favourite track on the EP and why?
'BDL Spartan' pumps me, 'BDL Shellerz' is gassed, get in as the motivator. I got a few what's touching me, can't lie.
How has your approach to making and crafting albums changed (if at all) over the years?
My craft and work method is simple - don't be fake, don't lie to yourself either. If it's shit, it's shit; don't polish a turd lol.
What do you credit your longevity to?
I never wanted to do music for a quick buck, I'd end up in jail or dead that way lol. To be in it for the long haul, aim for timeless and real music with base.
How did you get to call yourself Big Narstie?
My names got meaning: N for natural, A for artistic, R for respectable, S for sexy, T for talented,I for independent, and E for educated.
How do you think grime has changed since your first release?
Grime's changed 'cos people have stopped using it like a dirty little whore and also the nation's embracing it and the kids deffo on to this sound of the youth in the UK BDL.
Which city has the most love for grime?
There isn't a city what has more love for the music, the UK is fully in love with grime - it's fresh, real, rugged, raw, energy and base.
BBC Music Sound Of 2016 - Jack Garratt
Congrats to artist-producer and multi-instrumentalist Jack Garratt who has kicked the competition to the kerb and come out on top with the most votes to win the BBCâs Sound of 2016.
Around 140 influential music industry experts including DJ's, critics, broadcasters and bloggers named their top three favourite new acts from any musical genre. MixRadioâs very own Mark Lampo, global music editor extraordinaire was one of the experts invited to take part. We caught up with Mark to ask him about his involvement and find out what new music means to MixRadio in 2016.
Hi Mark, can you explain what the BBC Sound Of is?
Mark: The BBC Sound Of initiative is a great vehicle for talented emerging artists to gain even more momentum, advocated by industry experts. With the BBCâs support, theyâre broadcast to huge engaged audiences that may not have otherwise have discovered them. Itâs a real honour to be a part of the process, picking three artists that we (MixRadio) are really feeling and watching all the artists grow with the help of the BBC throughout the year.
What does the BBC Sound Of mean to MixRadio?
Mark: Itâs a brilliant start to the year. We finished reviewing all the great musical moments of 2015 with our âBest of 2015â campaign and the BBC Sound of 2016 is a catalyst to celebrate whatâs to come. Keep an eye out for our âOnes To Watchâ series!
Without revealing who you voted for, can you tell us which artists on the longlist have got you excited for 2016?
Mark: I canât reveal who we picked, but Iâm pleased to say that all three made it to the top 5.
What are your thoughts on the winner?
Mark: Congratulations to the hugely talented, homegrown, multi-instrumentalist Jack Garratt for an expected and deserved win. His debut album Phase, due to drop in February will verify this. Keep your eyes peeled and check out MixRadio to listen to all the finalists.

MixRadio Q&A with Sean Tizzle
Could you briefly introduce yourself for people that haven't heard your music before?
My name is Oluwaseun Morihanfen. Iâm an actor, singer/songwriter, performing and recording artiste signed to Difference Entertainment.Â
What's happened since the release of your album âThe Journeyâ? How have things changed?
A lot has changed since my debut album dropped⌠change is the only constant. My album âThe Journeyâ was the best pop album last year. Iâm really grateful to my fans for all the love and support. Have experienced change in every part of my life through music.Â
What's your favourite album of this year so far?
Honestly, none yet. A lot of people are dropping albums this year so I hope to find a favourite one before the year is over.Â
How did you write and record âThe Journeyâ?
When we started recording and putting out tracks back in 2013, I remember we once talked about making a hit list - to make all the tracks on the album a hit, which we pretty much did. So a lot of times writing was easy because I vibe with my team a lot. We share ideas. Working with Dtunes over the years has taught me a lot
Are there any collaborators you'd like to work with in the future?
Yeah⌠I already started work on my next album. I have plans to work with other talented superstars. Myself & Davido worked on a track earlier in the year, âDiamond Platinumâ with another Nigerian superstar. Iâm not disclosing any more names just yet.
On the international side, I met Wale backstage at a show in Houston. We talked for a bit - am still thinking about it. But be sure to expect the unexpected
Do you have any rituals or routines when it comes to music?
Not really. Often times it comes with the flow
How about the video for Abeg? Where did you come up with the idea for it?Â
I remember we were in Maryland, when I was looking for a director to shoot the video. We already had plans to shoot the video in the US even before leaving the country. So I was chatting with my publicist about the video & immediately he hooked me up with Ali Zamani, one of the best video directors in LA. My manager (Rico White) fixed an appointment. We flew to meet him in LA, where we eventually shot the video. It was really nice working with AZ.Â
What's the best environment to hear the album? Club at home or other?
Like I said earlier when we were recording the album, we had a plan to make every track a hit. So every track is a favourite track depending on your mood. âThe Journeyâ can be played anywhere â itâs unique like that. So you can comfortably listen to the album at home, the club, the mall or other.
How are these tracks working out in a live environment?Â
My identity from day one has always been good music. My melodies and harmonies simply describe my style as contemporary afro pop. So my music is live on every level.
If you could play anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
I would like to play in Germany or Australia, then maybe Asia, just to let you know how far my music has travelled.Â
What are you working on next?
Iâm dropping some more singles before the end of the year. Hopefully an album next year.
Do you have any upcoming shows or news you would like to tell us about?
My new single just dropped. Itâs titled âEruku Saâye Poâ - do check that out. I shot the video in Lagos. I also featured in a movie recently titled âAstrayâ. Expect more hit singles before the year ends. Check out www.seantizzleofficial.com for tour dates & venues.

Big GRRRL Small World with Lizzo
This week our Artist of the Week is Lizzo, who has kindly given us her brand new album âBig GRRRL Small Worldâ for MixRadio fans to stream in full.
Check the album now at http://mixrad.io/mixes/99358057
And read on to find out more about Lizzo and âBig GRRRL Small Worldâ...
Hey Lizzo, tell us about "Big GRRRL Small Worldâ, how did the album come together?
I wrote the record over a span of two years of being on the road. Then it was recorded and incubated at April Base Studios.
Which track would you recommend first for people who donât know your music?  And which one for the fans? First listen to âAINT Iâ. It's the thesis of the record, it gives you the whole spectrum. People who know me, listen to âBother Meâ.
Which is your favourite collaborator, track youâve guested on, and city youâve played in (and why?): Collaborator on the album - they're all my favorites for different reasons. But BJ definitely has a special place in my heart. He's been with me since LIZZOBANGERS and we've become really good friends. Track guest spot - Clean Bandit. Love how fast I was able to go. Live show - Nothing compares to playing at First Avenue
Any live shows planned around Big GRRRL Small World? Of course! Check http://www.lizzomusic.com for details!
Whatâs the ideal situation for listening to Lizzo? Â Anywheres cool as long as your mind is open.
Detroit vs Houston vs Minneapolis.  Youâve lived in them all.  Which oneâs best? Man, I can't choose. But there's nothing like a Texas GRRRL.
When are you most comfortable â rapping, singing or fluting? Â Flute
Name an artist your fans should check out. Sophia Eris she's my DJ and is EVERYTHING.
Where can people keep up with what youâre doing? My socials:  Twitter, Instagram, Facebook. But mostly lizzomusic.com
