The Dating Struggle
There is this moment that has happened with EVERY guy I have dated. Everything is going well, we are out to dinner or a movie, or just hanging out at home and then somehow it comes up. I can’t even really say how or what leads up to it, but eventually at some point in every relationship it is spoken and I am left feeling incredibly disappointed and hurt.Â
“I don’t date black girls.” “Your not really black.” “Your not too dark.” “You don’t act black.” “You don’t have black people hair.” Pure ignorance.Â
And this is coming from every race of guy. I’ve dated Asians, Europeans, African American’s, Other Mixed guys, White guys etc...Â
It took me so long to not hate the very skin I am in because of it’s color. I finally accept and love myself and then this crap happens. Guys date me because I am not too black. They see my darkness as a flaw that they can look past because I have a booty and a pretty face and talk with my mother’s Valley Girl accent. My own father and step father even say that they prefer white women to black woman (they are both African American).
Needless to say my relationships never lasted long after that. Fast forward several years to the Man I am now with. I wish I could say that he never said some Basic shit like that, but he did. Only I didn’t accept it this time, I didn’t let him get away with it. I called him on his bullshit. I got mad and he fell in love with all of me and my love for who I am. Now we have two beautiful mixed children together and he doesn’t introduce me by saying that I’m mixed, or point out my “whiteness” as if it somehow made it acceptable to date someone with dark skin. Â
I love everything about being bi-racial <3 <3

This is me and my son Théoden. I guess the lighting in this photo is awful but I am a mixed chick (hence the blog) and my husband is Hispanic. Having grown up a mixed kid I do have certain fears of what my son could go through. He will be told that he isn’t allowed to call himself black, that he has “white privlige” He will be told that he isn’t Hispanic because his mom is balck. Identity is just the beginning of my worries ofcourse, this is something I can help him with that my mother couldn’t really help me with. We still live in a very racist world, maybe not as racist as it was 50+ years ago but it still exists. And Jesus. You just wouldn’t believe the shit I have experienced. From all races. We went to a water park a couple of weeks ago and one of the staff members spotted Théoden, who was standing beside me. The next thing I know my 1yo son is gone and I panic. I look around and finally see some guy walking off with my kid so I run up to take him back and the guy kind of brushes me away and says “He’s not mine, he’s lost his parents.” And I tell him that I am his mother. He looks at me skeptically and it isn’t until husband joins us that he “understands”. That’s just one of the many dozens of ridiculous things we have gone through and Théoden isn’t even 2yo yet… I am ashamed to admit that I breathed a sigh of relief when Théoden was born so fair skinned. I thought to myself “He will have it easier.” What a stupid, aweful thing to think… Anyway. Don’t know why I felt the need to post this.
