Kuri stays where she is, watching in silence as Sasori's father moves around the room. She knows from her mother that he is a force of relentless, unstoppable energy feared by nations, but to her he is someone whimsical, a man gentle enough to allow her into his home and give her something to do while she waits for his son to arrive.
He engages with her while she paints. He helps her choose her colors. He learns her language so she does not have to sit in silence and always has someone to talk to.
He smiles at her when she is feeling lonely. He gives her tea. He teases her for her friendship with his son, but not like others do. He feels safe.
Which is the only reason Kuri dares to get up from her spot and go to his desk, sitting herself in his chair just to watch his puppet arm work until he returns.
The lighting in the hotel’s bathroom is just too good to pass up — his abs look magnificent. Gai sprawls on the hotel bed and sends his mirror selfies to Anko.

He’s a little on edge today, but Gai tries not to let it show. It’s been several days of feeling weak for reasons he cannot fathom, and a sense of uselessness is bearing down upon him; as it is, Anko’s been taking care of his meals, helping him get to where he wants, and generally busying herself with him.
He picks at his food, unable to find an appetite. “You don’t have to spend all your energy here with me, Anko,” Gai tells her. “You should go out and do what you need to do — live your youth!”

Anko doesn't bother dignifying his comment with a response, not at first. She finishes her meal and takes her plate to the sink before coming back to clear the rest of the table, saving him for last on the off chance he decides to take another bite.
She takes his plate when he doesn't, maintaining the silence between them because she doesn't have anything to say. There's a point to be made here — stupid games winning stupid prizes and all that — but mostly she doesn't have it in her to take down that enemy in his head just yet.
The snap, snap, snap of her packaging the food feels particularly loud in the kitchen, the space between them seeming to grow longer, wider, deeper, stretching out until she breaks it with a sigh. This isn't going to resolve itself. He isn't going to find peace on his own.
"Since when have I spent a single minute of my fucking time on something or someone I didn't think was worth it? " She says finally, turning around to face him, her hands gripping the edge of the counter. "You need to get out of your own head. I am here because I want to be and for no other reason. You can feel whatever you need to feel about what's going on right now, but don't drag me into that. I'm here by choice. Every day, every time. Do you understand that? I am choosing you.”

He’s so anxious it makes him feel sick. He had to take up extra shifts today at the gym to make up for the week he was away competing, and now he’s been stuck in class after class for hours, anxious to check his phone, anxious to get to Anko. Gai hopes none of the clients have caught his restless finger tapping or his restrained sighs.
He sends texts in between classes, but they all go unread.

[text:] Don’t drive if you’re angry. I’ll pay for the taxi
[text:] Home yet?
By the time he’s wrapped up his last class, Gai has no idea where she is and what he can do. He goes home, puts one of his frozen meals in the microwave, and sits. Sits with the uncertainty gnawing up his belly. Sits and stares at the single ticks, swiping to social media to refresh mindlessly before swiping back to the single ticks again.

When his screen lights up with her name, Gai snatches his phone up, a tentative relief washing over him. But before he gets the chance to say anything, she’s hung up on him.
Well. It’s good that she got home safely.
But the tone of her voice hasn’t done anything to quash his worry; if anything, it’s grown. He … wants to be there with her — he won’t be able to sleep if he knows he doesn’t do something.
Gai drives to her place, rings the bell, and raps on the door with his knuckles. “Anko!”
She is moments away from sleep when he knocks on her door. She hasn't even undressed, she's just face planted fully on the bed, and this really is not the time, Gai, she doesn't want to talk to you.
Another knock. Anko rolls over in bed, her arm over her face as she counts down from ten, then counts down a second time for good measure.
Slowly, she drags her ass out of bed. She shrugs off her jacket and rests it over the chair in the kitchen on her way to the door. She can hear him making noise outside and oh, god, she is not in the mood for this.
When Anko opens the door, there's no denying the state she's in - drunk, annoyed, and ready to fight. She levels him with a stare that would make weaker men weep.
"What do you want?"
Both Anko’s appearance and reaction has him taken aback. Gai frowns—in confusion, but also partially in response to the aggression.
“I—Huh?” Shouldn’t it be quite clear what he wants? He wants her to be okay—but now he has a feeling that he’s fucked up somehow and he doesn’t know why. A quick glance up and down and he’s taking her in: outside clothes, disheveled hair, and a faint but clear whiff of alcohol.
His lips tighten into a line and Gai takes a step into her apartment, one hand on the doorframe.
“Anko… You’ve been brushing me off all day. Are you mad at me?” Gai’s eyes are searching, but also guarded. “You didn’t even read my texts.” It’s not supposed to be an accusation.
She lets him in because of course she does. It's Gai, and even if she's feeling monstrous, she's learned enough self control by now not to immediately take it out on him. He'll get a few warning shots first.
"I told you I'm prickly." Anko says, as if that justifies anything, or explains her behavior. She leans back against the wall with a huff because, because, well. She's going to lose this fight, she can feel it, because Mr Righteous and Good Intentioned is here and she can't really compete with that even on her best day.
She presses her palms to her eyes and counts to ten. What is she supposed to do here? Admit she feels like shit? Anko sighs and, in a moment of peace keeping, settles for pouting at him instead of saying what's really on her mind.
It’s almost like he can physically see the fight going out of her. His expression eases a little when she presses her palms to her eyes, and he enters fully into her apartment. Gai waits and watches hawk-eyed as she self-regulates. When she sighs and pouts at him, the tension eases out of him too.
Gai lets out a sigh of his own. He matches her gaze with a moment’s raised eyebrows and a gentle, awkward pull of his lips. He rubs the heel of his palm against his temple, thinking.
“Okay. Well … I’m here. I don’t know what you need … You can talk if you want or we can just sit for a while, but you need a shower and a lot of water before you sleep.”
He turns to close the door, before he makes to pull her by the sleeve to the sofa.
“If I did something wrong, I hope you’ll tell me.”
Yeah, yeah. She does need water. The shower is debatable, she can do that tomorrow. But what's another hangover in the long line of them she's had? He worries too much. Such a caretaker.
Anko doesn't let Gai lead her to the couch, instead she just stumbles behind him and presses her face into his back. She wraps her arms around his waist with a groan.
"You're too nice." She mumbles. He is. "And you check in on me, and you're patient, and you piss me off with it, and —" She trails off with a huff. He smells good.

"And what the hell do you think you're doing, hiding shit from me?" Her summon slinks around her neck, tiny head perking up, its tongue sticking out in a move that manages to look smug. Someone is excited for the show, especially at Sasuke's expense.
Running his tongue along the back of his teeth, Sasuke catches the flicker of a white head at her neck. Ah. Shifting his gaze further up to meet her accusing eyes, he tilts his head. Propping a leg, he throws his arm over his knee to lean against it. Drawing out the moment to see if anything else comes out.
When silence keeps filling the space between them, he shrugs.
"Clearly it's something I'm not ready to tell you," he replies finally, gaze flickering back to her snake. Jutting his chin at the summons, "Why are you having it report on me?"

Realizing I can bring Suigetsu and Karin back from the dead too. Even Tenzo. Nothing is stopping me...
'I don't think that's very fair of you.' Kuri frowns at Sasori, turning away just enough that he is out of her line of vision. It's as close as closing the door on his face as she can get.

"Fair?!" Sasori was absolutely livid. He doesn't even bother signing it. Instead, releasing a string of Farsi profanities he's picked up from his Granny since he was in elementary. You know who wasn't fair--- that fucking snake!
Sasori doesn't give two shits about Orochimaru's ethically dubious stem cell research. So he shouldn't piss on Sasori's own research just because he may have rushed through the informed consent process and helped a few reach their own decisions on study participation (recruitment is a bitch and so are deadlines).
But if Orochimaru starts using threatening language on him.
The whole lot of them can burn. Kabuto. Anko. Tenzo. The lesser Uchiha. Whoever else has their name on the authors list--- fuck if he cared who was in the line of fire.
Sasori thinks. Very loudly. With a bunch of stomping in case someone turned off their cochlears. He doesn't do anything. Yet. Except huff a little bit more and work on another project--- just long enough to calm down from more uncharacteristically impulsive ideas (like hitting up Ryozen since we're on the topic of pissing Kuri off.)

It's always worse. His patience is worse. His kindness is worse. This good man treating her right, like she's good herself, like maybe she deserves nice things, when all she wants to do is, is —
Anko doesn't recognize the sound she makes when she screams. She's up to her eyes in shit and there he is, checking in on her and giving her a reason to show up tomorrow. She didn't ask him to do that. She just wanted someone nice to be around. She didn't want...
It's a few hours later when she calls him back, phone at 2%, her head no better, her speech slurred because if Mitarashi Anko is good at anything it's digging her own damn grave.
"Home safe." It's the first thing she says when he picks up the phone. She wants to scream and yell and tell him just how much she hates everything, but that wouldn't be right, because it's not him she hates but instead the idiot in the front room struggling to take off her own damn shoes. "I'm going to bed. I'll call you tomorrow, okay?"
