Okay so in CATS, every actor is given three words to base the performance of their character off of. For some cats, two or three of the words are synonyms or at least very similar and related (see Cassandra: haughty, disdainful, aloof) (see also Demeter: skittish, cautious, paranoid) (or Mungojerrie: mischievous, rambunctious, ne'er-do-well). For all intents and purposes, these words are the only canon characterization for cats that don't have their own songs.

Now, Alonzo was my favorite before I even learned about these, but what are his words??? VAIN, UNCERTAIN, BRAVADO. I can't think of a funnier set of traits to go into a single character.

Like, this guy is so full of himself. He thinks he can stand up to anybody. His wig is neat even though he isn't wearing a collar. RTT comes onstage and he's one of the only non-older generation cats to be like, "oh my gosh, he's such a scamp, I can't stand him. Watch me stand up straight in the back of the theater."

At the same time, he doesn't know what to do. He doesn't take the lead in anything. Throughout most of the show and especially in the Macavity fight, he follows Munkustrap around. In older productions of the show, he would dance (or "shadow") with Bombalurina and Demeter during the Macavity number, frustrated at being bested but not granted any lyrics. Munkustrap is gone and he literally doesn't know what to say about it. He's so full of himself and doesn't have his own song because he doesn't know what he would sing about. Does he have too many qualities to be proud of? Too few??? I don't know but neither does he. He can't make up his mind.

The third word being bravado really brings it all together. The showrunners fully acknowledge that this guy is putting up a front and showing off.
