/character analysis (ă
´ Ë `)
I DO think itâs a bit funny when people try to make the leech twins out to be these cold sociopathic type of characters because likeâŚ.you fell for it!! You fell for the characterâs facade that is supposed to be dismantled by the viewer!!
People sometimes forget that weâve got emotional suppression OLYMPICS going on at NRC (and god knows thatâs the only thing those boys are winning at) so no character can be taken at face value. Itâs easier to look at the overblotters for that, since we literally take a peek inside their mind in the game, but the same is true for all the other characters.
I could make a whole post about the importance of ârolesâ in twisted wonderland, and how trying to fulfill a role or escape one is what drives most boys mad, but since the Tweels are todayâs topic, iâll just point out scenes that display a side to them i donât see much of the fandom discussing.
Jade: Azulâs dream. Specifically, his scene with dream Jade. I think itâs pretty clear from it that Jade can, in fact, feel significant emotional distress, and that is not OOC for himâ as he himself doesnât point out anything wrong with dream Jadeâs behavior, itâs just that heâs very polite with his distress.
His reaction to being beaten down and forced to undergo his own signature spell is literally a âplease, donât do thatâ. Then, he gets significantly more distressed, asking again, before his distress shifts into anger. I think itâs important that we donât see his sprite when that happensâ the reason probably being that there simply isnât one that accurately portrays jade like that, losing his composure.
Point is, Jade can and will get upset at things, itâs just harder to notice because of his insistence in staying composed, unless heâs literally pushed to his breaking point. This also confirms that composure isnât Jade naturalâs state, but a front he puts up in order to keep control of situations. It only breaks when heâs completely at someone elseâs mercy.
Itâs likely there are moments in the game where Jade was significantly upset and his front tricked the audience into believing that he actually didnât care that much, but i canât think of any examples off the top of my head besides Azulâs overblot.
(We would drop Azul the instant he became boring to usâ said the LIARS!!!)
Floyd: Post Azulâs overblot and Post Azul awakening. I actually have a harder time with Floyd than i do with Jade, which i believe is a bit unusual among TWST fans. I think itâs because maybe weâre kinda similar, so i donât really get what is there to misunderstand about his character.
Many people believe that Floyd is brutally honest, but that is a bit untrue. I wouldnât go as far as to say that heâs a liar, but I would say that heâs a pretty unreliable narrator, as heâs absolutely terrible at understanding his own emotions, something that his brother also is.
Except that Floyd yaps, so many times, so he ends up saying things that arenât exactly true, but how he perceives them to be. Jade doesnât do that as often, so itâs harder pattern to notice with him (though his dream makes itâs pretty evident. But Floydâ Heâs the one that says that they would drop Azul if he ever became uninterestingâ and then literally goes on to make an effort to turn Azul âinterestingâ again when he overblots. If what Floyd said had been true, they wouldâve simply left once Azul started tweaking.
But no, they persisted. Floyd, even with his described âunpredictabilityâ, Floyd goes on to do the most predictable thing of all and attempt to save his childhood friend.
And there is the center of the matter. Floyd isnât unpredictable, he never was. His moods have specific triggers to them, he just doesnât recognize them. So, we end up with a character that âflips around all of a suddenâ when itâs actually not all of a sudden. There are things leading up to his moods, he just wonât say it, because heâs terrible at introspection.
This again, is a trait Jade shares with his supposed âfleeting interestsâ, where itâs actually something very normal (loving something for a while then just growing out of it with time) described in the weirdest way possible. âHe drops things at the drop of a hat!!â no he doesnât. Heâs lying to you. Just look at both of them desperately trying to hold onto Azul after he woke up from his dream. If Jade can really just drop things like he claims he can, why didnât he just to that then. It would have definitely been easier.
âOh, but they dropped him right afterâ, yes, because they were sure that it was safe. I often see people speculating that Floyd would be the type of guy to hurt his loved ones, or put his needs above othersââŚ.and yes, Floydâs needs are definitely important to him, but i will tell you that while Floyd definitely wasnât stoked to pull up both Azul and Jade, he still did itâ because heâs willing to do things he doesnât want to or compromise on things when it really comes down to it. He says it himself, that he doesnât want Azul to âbite the big oneâ. By all accounts, they are friends, and Floyd does care about Azul. He just wonât admit it.
Part of it is the fact that he himself may not notice it, and the other half is explained by the fact that Floyd doesnât want to be seen as someone with a weakness. He puts on a show of being this big bad intimidating guy at times, and thatâs cannot be explained as an accident. Both tweels put on these extreme masks as a sort of test, a sort of shield, probably a defense mechanism they developed from their (implied) quite convoluted childhood.
I think Floyd is waay easier to understand by putting him in comparison with Ace. If you understand Ace, then you definitely understand Floyd. You just donât know it yet, because Floyd is under the super useful life hack of doing absolutely ZERO introspection and acting like he understands himself. No you donât you stupid eel. You donât think about yourself for more than two seconds!!
