I see comments like this all the time and I’m so tired of this argument. It’s frustrating that people like this act like this era didn’t have more issues than it did and continue to use 13s era as an escape goat to dismiss any flaws. Here's the all the mistakes and questionable decisions.
1. The 60ths are not actually anniversary specials but a mid legendary sequels to series 4 to make some of the worst of the fandom happy.
2. The Christmas special is fine, all pretty standard stuff, but the lack of effort is a problem. They knew this would be the episode people would use to judge if the new series is worth signing back up for or not. It should have been better than serviceable.
3. Coming back with a horrible off-putting opener, Space babies! making it less likely people would sign back up.
4. Having some good stories right in a row but they are all experimental eps. This is all before they even lay the basic groundwork first.
5. Barely developing the characters' relationships, in some cases with side characters not at all.
6. Not accommodating for having less episodes but and still using the same story format that needs far more eps to work properly.
7. Having the main arc (I hate saying this) makes ZERO sense under ANY scrutiny, especially with everything else that was set up through out the season.
8. And yes, one of the if not the worst finales in the series. Also, the endings for both seasons take the largest amount of time out of the season. If the longest part of your story is also the poorest part people have a right to make a deal about that.
8. Praising itself as a great starting point, yet has the most ridiculous villains and arcs connected from the past and classic era. They are obscure even if you watched all of the new and classic era.
9. All while not using any of iconic villains people love and cherish.
10. Yes, S15/S2 does falls closer to this criteria of a mostly good series with a bad finale but even it doesn’t escape some this problems like the broken format because of the reduce ep count, reliance's on 2008 nostalgia with a Midnight sequel and Billie (more on that later) and more obscure classic villains storylines, while iconic ones still being ignored. And of course a terrible arc with a companion that gets one the worst endings in the show.
As for Billie while I’m on more on her side because she never actually got to play the Doctor unlike David Tennant this still 2000s nostalgia attention grab. Only reason this isn’t going down as well despite being a more interesting decision they underestimated the fandoms misogyny. This era has a good Doctor, some good eps, some great moments, and Belinda being a strong companion until the end but the core of is still broken and these issues are new to be addressed if the show comes back.
