SKYTECH HELICOPTERS
These three impressive Russian helicopters have been on Belgian territory for quite some time. They are the result of a partnership between the Belgian company Skytech International and the Russian helicopter manufacturer MIL (now Russian Helicopters) with the aim of offering international heavy helicopter transport. The MI-26T aircrafts were built in the mid-1990s by Rostverol in Rostov-on-Don. With a length of 40 meters and a weight of more than 36 tons, they are not only the largest and heaviest, but also the most powerful helicopters ever built. The aircrafts, of which a total of 316 were built, were used for international humanitarian missions of the UN and NATO.
As the helicopters were no longer suitable for flying in European airspace, they were sold privately. The Dutch owner hoped to find an African buyer for them, but his efforts were unsuccessful. In the meantime, the machines had languished for years, suddenly disappeared from view and reappeared just as suddenly, albeit in a particularly pitiful condition. Many parts had been demolished or were lying disassembled in the hold of the helicopters. Previously made agreements to return them to the Rostov-on-Don factory fell through. After all, it would cost a lot of money to make the aircrafts ready to fly again. Since the costs of stocking them started to increase, an intensive search was made for an alternative which now seems to have been found: some aviation museums are interested in including the special helicopters in their collections. However, the final decision on this has yet to be made…
USINE VERRE VERT
The Belgian glass industry reached great heights in the 19th century. At that time, Belgium was the largest exporter of glass in the world. This glass factory was founded during the height of that glass industry in 1868 as the “S.A. des Glaces et Verreries du Hainaut”. The company quickly flourished, thanks in part to the technological progress of engineers such as Martin André Opperman, who remained at the forefront of technology. In 1875, the young German engineer installed a basin furnace here, of which he was one of the inventors.
In 1920, several glass factories in the region came together to form the “Union Commerciale des Glaceries Belges”, which would later become “Les Glaces de Charleroi”. About ten years later, in 1930, the “Union des Verreries Mécaniques de Belgique - UNIVERBEL” was born. Other mergers took place and it was in 1961 that the major Belgian glass producers joined forces under the name “Glace et Verre de Belgique - GLAVERBEL”. In 1981, the Japanese giant of the glass industry Asahi Glass Group (AGC) bought the GLAVERBEL. At this site, the company focused its activities on the production of glass for solar panels, but the company increasingly faced competition from China, ultimately losing out to AGC and closing its doors for good in 2014.
Currently, the 27-hectare site is owned by a private company that intends to convert the buildings into a village for SMEs, where several companies can establish themselves.

CABINE D’AIGUILLAGE
Small but sweet… A signal box was a small building where railway officials regulated rail traffic, by operating signals and switches, among other things. During the time that this signal box was active, a manageable number of switches and signals were operated from here. This particular signal box was part of a large railway yard, which mainly served goods transports from the nearby industrial city. The railway yard is still active today, but nowadays the train traffic of the entire area is served from one place. Since 2006, Belgian railway manager Infrabel has been working on a concentration plan at a national level, with one traffic control center. From 2005, the number of signal boxes was systematically reduced from 368 to 31. This signal box was one of many such signal boxes that was abandoned as a result of this concentration plan.

MOLD HOUSE 2.0
I don’t usually visit private houses. For some reason it always feels like invading someone’s privacy, even though the place may have been abandoned for many years… When I do on occasion visit and photograph a house like that, I always try to focus on the decay and not so much on personal items, still lying around. I don’t know anything about the background or history of this house. The upstairs was full of junk, but the downstairs had some nice rooms with lots of mold and decay.
