beidou (北斗) : her name is the big dipper of the constellation ursa major. it’s only fitting that our favorite, best captain is named after one all seafarers’ favorite, best aids for navigation at sea :>

ningguang’s (凝光) title, 天权 (tian quan) can be taken to mean something like ‘right of the sky/heavens’. as an actual word, tianquan is the dimmest star of the seven in the big dipper, megrez. ningguang’s name itself can be literally understood as ‘congealing light’
