âIt comes in waves, I close my eyes, hold my breath and let it bury me. Iâm not OK and itâs not all rightâ
â BMTH - ,Drownâ
Lately Iâve been remembering the time of my life Iâve been struggling with terror, and I remember it being the most frightening and hard-to-survive experience of my life. I havenât written much about it before because even just thinking about it is hard, it feels like if I thought about it too hard it might all come back. I am going to write out symptoms for the sake of others who might have experienced them as well.
constant anxiety, rising up with any sound, inability to tolerate any noise
feeling my stomach was frozen with fear and experiencing constant stomach pain, to the point of quitting food because digesting it hurt too much to bear
being oversensitive to everyoneâs emotions, feeling them as my own, not being able to control it, causing extreme rises in anxiety, pain, stress, and exhaustion from emotions
feeling physical pain from emotions, feeling organs inside me hurt as if they were stabbed
constant shaking, sometimes very violent
inability to take deep breaths, only shallow breathing was allowed, if i were to take a conscious breath i would hyperventilate immediately and my breathing would turn erratic or into sobs
collapsing on the floor randomly
losing control over my limbs, inability to walk, legs turning off, falling down the stairs a lot
paralyzing and inability to move even a finger for hours sometimes
paralyzing in one spot and being unable to get up even if i could move my hands
not being able to tolerate presence of another human being, needing extreme isolation
registering any person as a death threat and expecting people to try to kill me any second
feeling exhaustion so extreme iâm always seconds from passing out
feeling pain over entire body so harsh iâm unable to move out of bed
feeling like iâm watching death in the face and will be dead any second
feeling like iâm going insane
unable to tell if i am alive or if i have been dead all along, feeling like a dead body or a ghost, unable to tell if I exist
complete detachment from body, not recognizing my own limbs or face
doing anything to lessen the fear, including insane exercise to the point of collapsing, self harm, jumping into cold water to get adrenaline rise, eating extreme foods to get my body to gag and feel alive for a second, provoking abusers to attack me so i wouldnât always have to be expecting it
having painful intrusive memories and thoughts and screaming at them to stop, to leave me alone, to let me be, not being able to bear the shame and guilt of it
hearing constant screaming in my head, seeing myself dead or dying or being killed when i close my eyes, seeing visions of my death, wondering if i had already been killed
nightmares so intense i would wake up in pool of sweat or shaking so violently it would take days to gain recollection, constant thirst, throat on fire, not being able to help it with water
strong feeling of not being allowed to exist, believing my existence will be found out and erased and that i am risking being caught and killed anytime iâm around people
feeling extremely distressed over how am i possibly going to handle living in such a state and deciding there has to be an end to it because itâs impossible to live like this, i would not live like this
These are all results of living in abusive and violent environment where I was constantly under death threats and threats of violence. I can only write them down now because most of these have gone away, or lessened to the point where I can tolerate them. If youâre struggling with these intense symptoms you are not insane, and yes there will be an end to it. Itâs also completely okay to avoid anything that makes you feel these things, if possible. Doing things isnât worth it if this is the result.
the worst type of panic attack is the one that starts with an âoff feelingâ and continues growing for hours, if not days, giving you no breaks, no pauses. a silent scream inside your head that keeps getting louder without stopping to breathe in even once. your body twisting and shaking, nails digging into the skin in a laughable attempt to scrape out the insects crawling underneath. knowing very well that your brain has made the insects up, but cutting yourself open anyway. it lasts, and lasts, and as it grows, it makes you kick and scream, and suffocates you with a rope woven from twitches, trembles and intrusive thoughts. itâs chronic pain, it doesnât go away; youâre bleeding already but there is so much more for it to take from you⌠you lose your consciousness from exhaustion but seconds later you wake up into the same torture chamber made out of your own flesh. no closure. no sleep. no numbness. no blackout. it lasts. it lasts. it lasts - until your heart gives up at last.
can we PLEASE stop throwing around the phrase âpanic attack.â panic attacks are not feelings of stress. they are intense bursts of anxiety and fear that cause severe physical symptoms. i am aware that everyone experiences panic attacks differently and some are certainly not as bad as others, but do. not. use. that. phrase. to. describe. slight. internal. anxiety. panic attacks are much much worse than that and can even be traumatizing and cause physical illness. stop!!! throwing!!! the!!! phrase!!! around!!!!!! it is highly insensitive and invalidates peopleâs experiences who struggle with panic attacks and/or have panic disorder.
me: *gets a panic attack out of nowhere for no apparent reason*
me at myself: what? what is it? everything's fine?
my anxiety: oh it's nothing just a casual reminder that you have a panic disorder

Quick Anxiety Self-Check, Part 2
Can you feel your heartbeat in your ears?
Can you take the kind of deep breath that happens when you yawn, or does it feel like it stops short? Like youâre wearing something tight around your chest and your lungs wonât fill up properly. Focus on slow, rhythmic breathing; try to get that satisfying deep breath. Try to yawn on purpose.
Is your body temperature fluctuating rapidly (a petty fight back and forth between hot flashes and cold sweats)? Cool your body down. Wet waschloth on forehead. Drink water. Staying comfortable is pivotal.
Are your hands shaking?
Do you have shivers or tingling sensations in your head or along your spine? (Your nervous system is in overdrive).
Are you suddenly, inexplicably irritable or impatient?
Are your thoughts looping? Give your brain a break. Watch TV or something else that is mind-numbing â distraction isnât always a bad thing.Your brain needs rest, too.
Is there a sudden increase in restlessness or fidgeting? Donât try and force yourself still. You fidget for a reason. Your body needs an outlet for the influx of tension and energy.
Trust your body. Listen to it. Itâs on your side.
Thanks brain đ

I'm not sure if I should ask you or scriptmedic about this, but what are the do's and don't's of calming someone who's having a panic/anxiety attack?
Courtesy of @scriptautistic:
Things not to do:
Donât : Yell at them. Especially not to calm down. This is the exact opposite of helpful.Â
Donât : Tell them to stop crying/shaking/hyperventilating. They canât help it.Â
Donât : Start panicking as well (if possible).Â
Donât : Touch them or move them without permission.Â
Donât : Ask too many questions without giving them time to answer. Ask open questions which require lot of reflection or open answers.
Donât: Force them to do anything they donât want to do.
Donât : Leave them alone before they have calmed down completely and told you so. If itâs not their first attack, they probably know how they behave.Â
Things to do:
Do: Speak as calmly as possible. Have calm gestures. Try to appear as non-threatening, calm, collected and reassuring as possible. Â
Do : Ask if you can do anything specific to help. Ask if they have medication and if they want to take it. Ask if they want help getting away from a stressor. Once these basics are covered, you can offer them something cold/warm to drink and a hug if youâre comfortable with giving them one.Â
Do : Try and help them breathe more regularly if they are hyperventilating. You can help them by saying âbreathe inâŚbreathe outâ in a regular, slow rhythm, or, while hugging them or with their hand on your chest, by telling them to follow your rhythm.Â
Do : Reassure them if they apologize, feel guilty or are ashamed to be seen like this.Â
Do: Gently but firmly keep them from hurting themselves.Â
Do : Once they have calmed down a bit, try to distract them to stop them from getting back into the attack or having another one. You can chat with them, tell them about your day, offer them to play a game, have a walk together, or do anything nice, soothing, and that they like. Comfort food is nice. Warm blankets are nice.Â
Do: Give them a way to keep in touch with you if you have to go shortly afterwards, or a way to contact someone else/ a hotline which can help.Â
