“I thought we’d already agreed that I’d be paying for this trip of ours?” he asked, “Or had I forgotten to give you that detail? Silly me. Head like a sieve, really.” He was being playful– his tone of voice, his smile, everything was in good nature. But he was serious, too; he intended to pay for this, and any other trip he and Charlie decided to take… if ever they did so. It was a little known fact, considering how few good friends he had, that he enjoyed to splurge on them– not just because the charges were all going through his dad. He’d been raised to see a huge spend of money as the ultimate show of affection, and though he was more down to earth now than he’d ever been at any of his snobby private schools… old habits were hard to break. Besides, the entire thing had been a lot of his idea. If she was willing to show him her town, spend time with him, be his friend– he wanted to show her that it meant a lot to him, anyway he knew how, “You just let me know when you want to head out. I’ll make sure everything’s sorted.”
She gave him a look she gave him wasn’t a definite confirmation by any stretch, lips pursing as she cocked her head to the side. “Max, I never agreed to that. You said you’d pay for London. I’m payin’ for this. It’s only fair.” If Charlie knew Max at all--and she liked to think she did, at least a little--she knew that he’d fight her on this. And maybe he had a right to; as far as she could tell, London didn’t hold half the meaning to him that Middle of Nowhere, Texas did to her. But that was okay--it wasn’t about that. Not everyone was fortune enough to grow up in a town that raised you, that loved you. Casually, she set her hand over his, further emphasizing her point and sharpening her look. “I can’t let you pay for this.”
