Ok ok so I’m only half way through season 2 now (wonderful, absolutely beautiful btw) and so far it’s just:
But anyway I drew them yaaaay :)))))
guns don’t kill people, horses kill people
guess again
“I confront [white guilt] every year, about a month into my course on racism, among [white] students who come to me in tears because they cannot deal with the racism that goes on in their families or their home towns or their student residences. Their tears are the result of genuine anguish, care, and a desire to learn and to change. I confront similar attitudes among my colleagues, and I am similarly gratified by their concern. But those who experience white guilt need to learn three things: 1) People of colour are generally not moved by their tears, and may even see those tears as a self-indulgent expression of white privilege. It is after all a great privilege to be able to express one’s emotion openly and to be confident that one is in a cultural context where one’s feelings will be understood. 2) Guilt is paralysing. It serves no purposes; it does no good. It is not a substitute for activism. 3) White guilt is often patronizing if it leads to pity for those of colour. Pity gets in the way of sincere and meaningful human relationships, and it forestalls the frankness that meaningful relationships demand. White guilt will not change the racialized environment; it will only make the guilty feel better.”
— “Women of Colour in Canadian Academia,” Audrey Kobayashi (via lamaracuya) (via hagereseb)
1) is probably the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. Whomst the fuck has the privilege of having your tears always understood.
Wait no 2) just took the spot. Guilt has no purpose? Jesus Christ lady, your degrees are in the arts and in gender studies, please read literally An Article outside your own field please, may I suggest Psychology, Game Theory or Philosophy*
3) You’re supposed to feel pity for people who have it bad you relentless psychopath!
*A good start is “Guilt in Games,” Battigalli & Dufwenberg, 2005.
“My class makes white people feel bad, which is a problem for People of Color” Jesus Christ have you heard yourself talk.
Nowhere on this post does it say those feelings are wrong. They ask people who feel this way to UNDERSTAND the implications of feeling that way.
1) There are many reasons your feelings may be invalidated by others. However, black people can have all of those reasons plus just being black. There are many situations where black people feel they cannot express themselves the way a white person could. So yes, self indulgence in your feelings can be seen as a privilege. That does not make it wrong, that makes it a privilege and if you think that is wrong then we need to work more towards equality.
2) Reading comprehension and psychology? “It is not a substitute for activism…. White guilt will not change the racialized environment; it will only make the guilty feel better.”
3) Pity is not the same as empathy or compassion. Acknowledging that and why people find it insulting doesn’t make someone a psychopath.
If you feel personally attacked by this post may I suggest trying to actually understand it?
