The canon just makes everything worse. Is it an unhealthy way of interacting with a story??? Hell yes. Does it keep my mind peaceful and not thinking about all the terrible shit done to this ip??? Rose lives in a massive house with its own observatory in New York State. Not to mention the fact that this wealth came with technology and you could argue that it made them very qualified to learning suburb’s mechanics and excelling at the game (Karkat fucking up their universe not-withstanding).

porrim comes from a society in which culling means the complete opposite. to cull on beforus means to be a literal caretaker, to be in charge of helping those below you. culling is still deeply fucked up and ableist, but on beforus, it’s much more like mothering. this is why porrim sees this type of work as demeaning and sexist— it’s much closer to a mirror of earthly gender roles.

I think i saw someone point this out (though they didnt bring up the Dirkjake angst part). At the time i wasn't so sure, but then i thought about how often in Meat and Candy how Jane is usually being framed by Jake and how her actions are meant to reflect on him and his choices. Brain Ghost pretty much exists to tell Jake that he's being a beta cuck by not doing anything about Jane i guess jake is her minder and not anyone else named Roxy? and him finally deciding to do something about her is basically the crux of his character arc in Candy. In Meat things just kind of fizzle out and Jake instead goes into a crisis about endorsing her, but most of the conflict is about how Jake feels bad for not being able to stand by Jane but also thinking more about how Dirk will look at him afterword. Or maybe i remembered that wrong. Really, it's been a while and Meat was the more boring of the two parts.

Jane realizes she actually kinda hates being a business woman because all the things she liked about it were more the communal aspect of sharing and the accomplishment of hard work then the being in control and micromanaging stuff, however she still likes sharing recipes and making sure people get good quality ingredients and also its her family legacy and just lots of complex stuff.

So Dave who had previously swooped in as the local finances guy to help her crunch numbers and come up with business plans helps her brainstorm and one of his stupid rambles gives Jane the idea to instead start a baking college instead, where not only people can learn to bake and obtain these ingredients and learn about quality, at a certain level of qualification they can choose to help make goods that are sold through the college, they are of course paid for this and even get some extra credit.

Then upon graduating the student can decide if they want to leave to do their own thing, or stay and continue making products and goods for the college on a more official hired basis. A form of a way to both help get out quality goods to consumers, embrace the community aspect of baking Jane loves, and letting Jane still be able to make things to sell like cookbooks or inventions she comes up with while not taking up all her time with all the stuff she doesn't like or forcing her to be more profit over people.

IMO, the primary difference between the two is that Jax is made from the ground up to be a repressed trans woman and his various toxic behaviors, insecurities, etc. are all born out of his inability to get past himself and open up; both to others and himself. The subtext may be heavily implied until the finale where it becomes text, but it's still something that drives the core of his character arc.
