While homosexuality may have been a part of human nature, it was not invented in Mexico until the night of November 17th, 1901. Or more so, homosexuality was not something that was commonly spoken about until the raid on what we now call The Dance of the 41.

The scandal that brought the topic of homosexuality to be written about in the Mexican Press began with its presumed organizers, Ignacio de la Torre y Mier (the then son-in-law of the then-President Porfirio Diaz) and his friend Antonio Adalid, two members of high society at the time.

41 Men (thought it was rumored that there were 42 with the 42nd being Ignacio de la Torre y Mier) many of whom were dressed in women's gowns, wigs, earrings, make up, were arrested leading to news presses having a field day in spite of the governments efforts to keep it hushed, seeing as how many of the attendees were part of then high society.

It is absolutely worth mentioning that there was a similar raid on a group of Lesbians in Santa Maria on December 4th of the same year, but it did not receive as much press attention. It was also said by prominent writer Carlos Monsivais that it was "the invention of homosexuality in Mexico" due to it being the first time homosexuality was openly spoken about in the Mexican media.

The event would later be immortalized on TV, Film, Satirical Verses, taken in by a good number of the Mexican Queer Community, and was even given an exhibit in the Museum of the City of Mexico after the 100th anniversary of the event with the museum hosting a dance in its honor.

Mexican Hot Chocolate Panna Cotta

Ingredients

4 Cups Milk

1 Tablet of Mexican Hot Chocolate (3.1oz/90g)

2 Packets of Gelatin (4oz/14g)

In a pot, dissolve tablet in 3 cups of milk and bring to a simmer.

In a separate bowl or cup, mix gelatin with 1 cup until dissolved.

Once the Hot Chocolate has come to a simmer, add cold milk and gelatin mixture and bring back to a simmer.
