#savemarsaskala A marina in Marsaskala will cause the bay much harm which will include but may not be not be limited to:
• Significant visual change because of the huge boats and masts taking up the entire marina.
• Degradation of natural coastal landscape due to the change to the natural shapes, forms and processes within the bay itself such as the addition of pontoons and walkways gates and work stations etc.
Extensive Damage to the Marine Ecosystems
• Direct loss of the bay's natural habitat due to eutrophication due to the disruption of wave energy, currents and natural water flow.
• It will disturb the sensitive ecosystems and transition zones between the bay and il -Maghluq as well as the bay itself and the open sea resulting in damage to the natural habitat of fish and other sea creatures.
• The areas of shade from the sun caused by the boats and other structures on the water will result in the long term damage of any marine plant life that might have survived the dredging of the bay. This would also mean permanent loss of slow growing, sensitive species which would be unable to recover
• Dredging can also cause the release of metals, chemicals, and dioxins (Dioxins are highly toxic and can cause reproductive and developmental problems, damage to the immune system, and hormones and also cause cancer) into the marine environment which will further damage the health and viability of marine species in the surrounding area not excluding fish farms which are quite close to the bay.
Degradation of water and sediment quality.
• The bay will also suffer from pollutants in the water which can cause sedimentation and contamination of the wider marine environment which can be due to a huge increase of rubbish, sewage, oil and antifoul paints entering the water, through increased use in area.
Loss of public access and amenity
• A marina in the bay will of course bring restrictions for the residents due to the exclusion of public access to all parts of the bay’s coastal environment. Only those paying to berth their boats and boat employees will be allowed access into the bay/marina
• The whole village will suffer from increased noise, light and constant boat traffic within the bay itself.
This does not begin to list the damages incurred by the village itself an important point would be large amount of land lost for the parking area (for marina residents not locals since it will be privately owned) and for other projects such as the part infront of grabiel for the lifting cranes which will be forever lost for residents.
