some of my friends said that me being so nice about herobrine makes them happy because of how often he's portrayed as malicious and evil (and how i at times portray him as misunderstood because of this) really just. had me thinking.
modern minecraft horror, especially those horror videos or args / etc that feature herobrine, entirely miss the point of the 'horror of herobrine'. SO often do they make him extrmely evil, like entity 303 style, and have him out to Get You so he can kill you/otherwise harm you.
but... the horror of herobrine? it was never about him being malicious, or evil, or out to get you, or destroy something you made or kill your pets, or take your stuff. the point, and why he was scary, was that his existence was impossible, that it should be impossible for something else, especially something player-like, to alter your singleplayer world.
that's what was scary about him. it was that he was doing something that was impossible, and back when his myth started, it made sense too โ a glitch where blocks didn't line up correctly and would occasionally have eye-like white lines between them existed, and because people knew so little about the game (as compared to now, where we have people who know the ins and outs of minecraft's code and mechanics (shoutout scicraft), it was super easy to assign that to the myth of herobrine (or as it started, the 'white eyes' myth, which later morphed into herobrine) to various glitches, especially the one where white eye-like shapes would appear in the dark and deep fog.
and that's not to mention, everything he ever did? it wasn't something that largely affected you. quoting from the original 4chan post; "as i expanded the world i saw things that seemed out of place for the random map generator to make; 2x2 tunnels in the rocks, small perfect pyramids made of sand in the ocean, and groves of trees with all their leaves cut off."
he dug random tunnels, built small sand pyramids in the ocean, and deleafed trees. funnily enough redstone torches weren't even mentioned once! they weren't actually associated with herobrine until a server pluggin called "iLoveYou." was created (and that's also when the summoning altar is from too!), where he'd have the same behaviours as the oriignal creepypasta, including new behaviours, which were placing redstone torches, teleporting behind players, building underground dungeons and luring players into traps (the latter three you don't really see in more faithful herorbrine retellings). of course there's been many other abilities given to herobrine through other mods and plugins, but we won't be delving into those (other than an offhanded mention in these parenthesis that one of the actual mods let him use tools, because i thought that was interesting). it's really interesting how, despite the first original incarnations of herobrine had no association with redstone torches, and yet it's iconic to him nowadays.
all the malice and intent to harm you was introduced in later fan-made interpretations, but in the sources largely considered original? he just existed, maybe chilled in your house a little or floated above some lava (brocraft streams), dug some tunnels, built some pyramids, observed you from the borders of the deep fog, and deleafed some forests (original 4chan post).
that was the horror. the scare was that his existence and actions were supposed to be impossible, because it shouldnt be possible for a non-existent player to exist in your world, and alter or change it like you could. it wasn't that he was evil. it wasn't that he wanted to kill you. it was that he was just like you, and that it shouldn't be possible for him to be like you.
barely any modern minecraft horror projects portray him like this. it's all malice and evil intent and wanting to kill you. and that entirely misses the point of herobrine, and the horror of having him in your world.
and honestly, if the way people have talked about herobrine in the tags of my mc art series, and how they wanted to be his friend even way back when he was new, and still extremely scary tells me anything, its that if herobrine can be loved, so can you.
