“Y’know just when I was starting to forget about you here you come waltzing through my door like clockwork.”
You still remember the last time you saw smoke. Like it was yesterday in fact. He had shown up to your ranch unannounced and all fidgety. Couldn’t keep his hands still for nothin’. Like he was itching to confess his sins to you.
“You goin’ where now?” You turned to face him, cigarette in hand.
“Chicago. Stack says there’s a lotta snobby rich people up there, people to rob. Mobs and shit to work for.” You scoff. Here he go spewing that gansta bullshit again.
You both sat under the big oak tree in your backyard. This was your usual hangout spot whenever the twins stopped by. Usually just you and Smoke though. You’d sit there and just talk for hours. Sometimes you’d get drunk. Sometimes Smoke would tell you stories about him and Stack growing up together. Never about his father though. There was one time you managed to get him drunk enough to slip up just a bit. That was the first and last time you ever saw him cry.
He made you promise to never bring it up again.
“You know how it is y/n. We just following the money.” There was silence after that. The breeze shook the leaves from the tree as he waited for your response.
“How long you gon’ be gone for?” You watched the mother bird feed her babies above your heads. Their greedy mouths open, screeching to be the first one fed. He sighs.
“However long it takes.” he shrugs.
“The hell does that mean?”
“Until we make enough.” he clarified. The sharpness in his voice giving away his irritation, despite the lack of emotion in his features.
“Enough for what Smoke?” You scoff again. This man don’t make no damn sense. What they got in Chicago that he can’t get here? Ain’t this place enough for him? They’ve already made a name for themselves. The infamous SmokeStack twins. Ready to shoot, kill, or rob whoever gets in the way.
"Don't worry about it." He shakes his head.
"Don't do that. Just tell me what the hell you two have planned! What's so important that you have to move all the way to Chicago for?" You stub out your cigarette in the dirt.
"You. And everyone else I care about." You both went silent after that. A while passes as the breezes shakes the leaves off the trees onto the two of you. He lets out a noise and gets up on his feet.
"Goodbye y/n." He nods at you one last time before turning on his heel and walking away for the last time. You watch him get smaller and smaller with each step he took into the distance.
And that was that. Smoke was gone and you didn't think you'd ever see him again. You tried to pretend like it didn't mean anything to you. He didn't care enough to stick around? That was fine. Him and his brother can go fuck themselves.
Or at least that was what you told yourself to help soothe the ache in your chest. But the bottle did that better than any remedy you'd ever come across. And it stayed that way for seven long years.
It was any other day for you. The southern sun was beaming down on the ranch. Your quaint little house quiet and peaceful. The horses were all behaving nicely. The breeze carried the faint smell of summer and cigarettes as it blew through the fields. But something was off. Despite the tranquility of it all, it was almost too perfect. Like the calm before the storm. Or more accurately, the smoke.
You had been tending to Maybelle’s new foal. She had just given birth to a beautiful red filly. You decided to name her Spice. Fitting for the attitude she’s taken from her mother. You heard the car pull up as you set down the last stack of hay. Then the sound of the door shutting and footsteps walking up the pavement.
Now, you weren’t expecting any company. And nobody ever traveled up to the ranch for no reason. So who the hell was this knocking on your front door?
You cautiously exit the stables. Your hand comes up to block the harsh rays from the sun to see the stranger better. He had his back to you. He was tall, nicely dressed too. Blue scally cap. Grey stripped vest with matching trousers. And a white button up. He hadn’t noticed you.
“Can I help you sir?” You called out to him.
He stiffened at your booming voice but didn’t turn around. He just lowered his head and dropped his cigarette, stomping it into the old wood of your porch.
“Sir.” You put a little more weight into your voice in a sorry attempt at intimidation. You didn’t know who this man was or what he wanted, but either way you could just sense the trouble coming off him in waves. Whether he was here to rob you, or something else, you’d protect this ranch with your life.
“Nah,” you paused. The familiar twang in voice settling in your bones.
“’m just here to see an old friend.” He finally turned around. He put his hands in his pocket and squared his shoulders. He lifted his hat slightly to reveal his features more clearly.
Smoke.

You stared at each other for what felt like forever.
“Well?” His hand gestures to nothing.
“Well what?” You squawk.
“You happy to see me?” His voice is unsure. It sounds odd coming from him. Smoke was always sure in everything he did.
“Being unsure leaves rooms for mistakes you can’t afford to make.” He always said, mainly to Stack of course.
Instead of answering, you stab your pitchfork into the dirt. He watches closely as you make your way from the stable over to the porch. You walk up the steps until you're standing in front of him. Face to face. For the first time in years. You can see how much the Chicago air has aged him.
“Y’know, just when I was starting to forget about you here you come waltzing through my door like clockwork.” You scoff. He didn’t say anything.
Smoke watches as you brush passed him and enter the home. He doesn’t move so you look back over your shoulder.
“You comin’? Or are you just gon’ stand there lookin’ stupid?” His feet drag him inside and he closes the door behind him.
By the time he looks up, you’ve already made your way to the kitchen.
“Drink?” You pull out two glasses and a bottle of whiskey, which just so happened to be his favorite brand.
“Always.” He makes his way over to you and takes a seat at the dining table. After pouring, you pass him the glass.
“Here’s to old friends.” You toast before downing the whole glass in one gulp. He does the same. There’s silence for a few moments. You’re both waiting for the other to speak. This wasn’t how either of you imagined your reunion to be honest. It’s almost like there’s a stranger sitting in front of you that you’ve never met before.
“Where’s Stack?” You figured that’d be a good place to start. It wasn’t often you’d see one twin without the other. He sighs.
“In town. Doing business.” You actually laugh at that. Duh. Always business with these two.
“Of course he is. What kinda business? If you don’t mind me asking.” He always got defensive when you’d ask about the things they’d get into. You don’t blame him really. You knew he was just trying to protect you from that stuff. You weren’t too keen on being in on whatever the hell they got up to most of the time anyways.
“We uh… we just opened up a new place not too far from here. A Juke Joint. He out there gettin' it ready for the grand opening tonight. Dancing, drinks, and allat. That’s why I’m here actually, wanted you to come.” Now that’s surprising.
“A Juke Joint? Ha!” he nods stiffly, “, never saw you as the dancing type. Hell, I’ve never seen you in a crowd that wasn’t all armed to their teeth with guns.” You laugh as you pour yourself another glass. You gesture for his glass and he slides it over.
“Lemme guess,” you’re full on howling now, “Stacks idea?”
“Yup” he actually smirks a little bit, but tries to hide it with his glass.
“HA! Juke Joint…” you mutter as you try to at least pretend you’re not laughing in his face right now, “Y’know what? Hell yeah. I’ll come. Drinks are on you tho’.”
Now if you were any other man, he’d tell you to fuck right off. Might’ve even smacked you around a bit for even suggesting such a thing. Just the thought of it pisses him off. Free drinks? At his joint? Not in a million years.
But you weren’t any other man. So, he’d let you have as many as you’d like. Even if he ended up losing a couple bucks in the process.
