Hi, friends! It’s become more apparent to me lately that we’ve got a lot of new people entering the fandom and not a lot of people know about plot resetting. Got an ask about how I got my villagers placed around my paths, and I couldn’t do justice explaining it in the limited characters in my reply so for anyone who hasn’t heard of plot resetting I’ll explain it!
1. First things first, you have to know that someone is moving to your town and what day they will be moving in on. Usually if you invite a villager from someone else’s town they will plot their house the next day. Campers, on the other hand usually take two days before they will plot their house, so not the day after you invite them, but the next day after that. For example, if I invited a villager from my camp today (June 16), they wouldn’t place their ropes until June 18.
2. Once you get to the day you know the villager is moving in on DO NOT LOAD ONE OF YOUR CHARACTERS. This includes your mayor and any characters that already have a tent/house plotted in your town. Instead choose to create a new character. This character doesn’t matter at all so name them whatever you want, I usually just hit buttons randomly. Speed through the train sequence again as this character doesn’t matter until you get off and can move around freely.
3. Once you get off the train and can walk around town, go find the villagers ropes. If they are in a spot you don’t like simply turn the game off without saving and try again. Keep selecting the new character option on the main screen and going through the train sequence. DO NOT LOAD ONE OF YOUR CHARACTERS.
4. You can continue with this new character reset method until they situate themselves in a spot you like. If you like the spot the villager is in simply go through the rest of the motions to create this new character. (visit town hall, set up your house spot, etc)
5. Once you finish creating the character and can save quit, do so.
6. Since this new character is a throw away character when you make it back to the start screen you can select them as if you were going to load them up again. However, when Isabelle asks if there’s anything you need to do before loading select the option that you need help with something then choose to delete the new character’s house. After Isabelle deletes them, they’re gone! :D
7. Now you can load up one of your characters/your mayor and enter your town normally. The villager will be in the same spot you left them and won’t be in your path. :)
Helpful tip: This process can take a long time if you have one specific spot in mind for that particular villager. My suggestion to you is to place public works projects around your town in places you definitely don’t want villager houses to pop up. You can always delete them later if you don’t want them. I suggest fountains because they’re big and good at deterring.

Another helpful tid-bit: If you pick up a villager from someone and don’t want to wait to move them in, simply have Isabelle set your clock time to before 6AM on the day the villager is supposed to move in. Example: I pick up super-ultra dreamie and want them moved in right away. Invitation date: June 16. I tell Isabelle upon start-up that the time is actually June 17 5:58AM. When you exit your house in game immediately save quit again. DO NOT LET IT PASS 6AM WHILE YOU ARE LOADED ON A CHARACTER. Once you are safely back at the start screen wait a couple minutes for the time to pass 6AM in game and then proceed with step 2. ^^
