Penelope unsurprisingly was treated like a non existent character and when she had character she was shouting at her son for some fucking reason???? The writing made her seem completely inactive and rather unintelligent compared to her original. But hey, they gave telemetry more attention than some adaptations might…misogyny…

Telemarketer being played by Tom Holland was such an odd choice. He has this extremely specific air to him that just does not work here. Also no shade to him but he looks so so so not Greek. (Pen too)

They basically made Elliot’s character more important to Ody’s character and feelings than his friend, brother in law and right hand Eurylocus (can’t spell it). Which wouldn’t be bad if it serves some sort of character arc.

Antinous was not intimidating enough. Sure he was slimy and rude but he didn’t really feel like a leader or a threat, just the suitor we happened to focus on.

The moments from the story they kept cut and changed felt very odd and the time spent on each part more so. The movie is 3 hours and yet some scenes that felt quite important were rushed and scenes like the men turning to pigs was entirely too drawn out. I did not need to see each person individually turned to and from pigs thanks.

Also correct me if I’m wrong as I’ve never fully read through the odyssey (yet) but isn’t Circi very much meant to be this attractive younger witch that is tempting to men?

Then there was the strange philosophical moments where the story stopped to spout nonsense that didn’t add to the plot. Most of the time it was something that had already been shown to us in the previous scenes.

Calypso’s island and the whole telling the story ass backwards felt odd. Personally I’m quite fond of Epic the musical’s approach of saving our proper introduction to Pen and Tele till far into the story after they’ve been built up, but that’s my preference. This movie instead decided to basically introduce Telephone first and then introduce Odysseus.

Ody wasn’t short enough, he’s supposed to be short. He also wasn’t ruthless or empathetic enough to earn an arc in either direction and his story consisted of

Start: break Zeus’ rules

Middle: break Zeus’ rules

End: you guessed it, break his god damn rules!

He doesn’t have a character that changes or grows from his struggles at sea.

The ending, the ending felt far too Hollywood. With things from the beginning and the story beats. Also I know I already mentioned Penelope but something about her just REALLY didn’t sit right with me, I can’t figure out if it was actor, direction, writing or what but it left her feeling weird.

The fight against the suitors and the challenge with the bow felt very poorly executed. Ody the incredible tactician…locked himself in a room with people who want him dead… sure he had a bow but there’s a lot of suitors? Like what was his plan? There’s no clever trick or specific knowledge of the palace, no way to split them up and pick them off. He just…solos like a hundred dudes because… because he’s Odysseus I guess?!

The mutiny/ growing distrust his crew have of Ody is just… really not done well. In this movie he actively chooses to defy the gods or whatever to get his men home, yet he’s still labelled some sort of liability or something? And Eurylocus figuring out he knew about Scylla was such an ass pull.

People have talked about this already so I’ll make it brief. Why are the gods not here? Zeus stricken them down yet in that scene they don’t even have lightning strike the ship or anything?

And yes, I don’t care what bigots say, some of the non white actors looked far more Greek than Tom Holland ever will, sue me.

I could go on but id really rather not so my last comment is the music. It wasn’t bad music but it never felt fitting for the story it was in. It was like it Iowa’s focusing more on being “exotic” and “mystical” than it was with sounding like actual music from the area or something fitting of the story. It was all rather bland honestly.

But one piece of music. One piece.

Akita, I miss her and Lloyd being all silly and arguing about stupid stuff. I think Akita would be a big fan of flowers as decoration because during the ice emperor reign they didn’t have much green stuff and pretty plants.

I love Akita, she’s such an unimportant character in the grand scheme of the show but she still feels super important to Lloyd’s character. Plus sora looks exactly like what you’d get if her and Lloyd had a daughter so.

I like to think after the merge things were even better for her and the other formlings. There were more new things and they could trade with other places. I wonder if Akita ever would have thought about looking for Lloyd. Maybe she wanted to but I think after being alone so long before the ninja helped, she probably didn’t want to set off alone in new weird realms. After all, she’d only really just gotten them back.

Been busy with studying but recently I’ve been thinking about a certain terrible ai “show” and it reminded me how something simple like fruit can give inspiration to those with actual creativity.

Pomegranate always makes me think of the Greek myth about Persephone eating pomegranate seeds and being forced to live there half the year. Also the leaves reminded me of laurel crowns.

Pomegranate originates from northern India and Iran (according to google) so I decided to try make her look northern Indian.
