i don't think a lot of people realize how bad celiac is as someone who developed celiac less than a year ago and thought it was just bread until then.
i can develop cancers from eating stuff i shouldn't. it's not like lactose intolerance, because in that you're missing an evolved enzyme (it's actually natural; humans are not supposed to drink milk past "weaning" age).
celiac is an autoimmune overresponse to gluten, because it's not a natural protein and the immune system mistakes it for a threat. it attacks the small intestine's villi, which absorb nutrients. this can lead to malabsorption, resulting in a lack of nutrients like fat, vitamins, minerals, etc.
the reason why is because gluten (and a lot of people don't realize it's found in rye and barley additionally to wheat) contains gliadin, which is resistant to digestion. gliadin peptides cross the intestinal barrier due to increased permeability ("leaky gut") and activate an immune response.
this response is autoantibodies. which destroy the body's tissues, because the AAB (^) want to get rid of the threat at all costs to not risk much else. this damages the intestinal lining further, and can lead to systemic symptoms (like skin rashes, joint pain, neurological issues, etc)
celiac is not just a gut thing or a digestive disorder. it can cause dermatitis herpetiformis (very, very itchy skin rash boo), neuropathy (nerve damage outside the brain and spinal cord, feels like your limbs falling asleep), ataxia (impairment of voluntary muscle movement mostly in gait and speech), brain fog, thyroid disorders or diabetes, infertility or miscarriages, osteoporosis (causes bones to become weak due to lack of calcium absorption), and probably more that i don't experience.
celiac can also be triggered by environmental factors like infections (been there done that) and surgeries (i had two under the age of five nearly back-to-back), or stress.
celiac has no cure nor no medication. the only way to "treat" it is by maintaining "the world's most impossibly strict diet for the rest of your life," -punko. and she's not wrong, unless it's miraculously cured by like. pregnancy cravings or something in some people (has happened before), but i think that's just an allergy or intolerance to gluten and not a straight up disease.
anyway, i'm malnourished because my villi are damaged. there's other autoimmune diseases i could get (like diabetes), or i could get cancer of my intestines. it's also genetic in my family (thanks great grandpa!), so i'm probably nerfed regardless. again with neurological disorders like ataxia, which i kind of have. it's not extreme, so i'm chilling.
celiac can be diagnosed with blood and genetic tests. you could also get an endoscopy, which is where they stick a camera down your throat, nose, or up your ass to look at your upper intestine. they prefer endoscopy because they can see it.
you can take supplements for nutritional support. iron helps me a lot, and i should probably take it now. bye chat
