t is believed that Solitude was born as a result of her mother being raped by a white sailor while she was being transported on a slave ship from Africa. She was sold into slavery in Guadeloupe.

–Solitude was called “La Mulâtresse” (Female Mulatto). Mulatto is an offensive spanish term used to refer to mixed race people (white and black)

-She was initially a slave but freed after abolition of slavery in the French colonies in 1794 after the Haitian Revolution, then in 1802 Napoleon wanted to reintroduce slavery so Solitude, now pregnant, joined the rebellion led by mulatto leader Louis Delgrès with her followers.

-Plantation owners had become desperate trying to find workers for the fields. They appealed for help to the French Head of State, Napoleon Bonaparte, who responded by sending a large military expeditionary force to reimpose slavery on the island.

-Despite being pregnant, she fearlessly fought all the way to the final defeat when they got outnumbered by french troops though for one.

-The last bow for freedom, a suicide mission, once the troops had gained in on their territory, the rebels blew up the troop’s gunpowder blowing them up killing them and some of the rebels though Solitude was among the survivors.

-Solitude was imprisoned by the French and because she was pregnant at the time, she was not to be hanged until November 29 in 1802, one day after giving birth. Rest in Power!

-On May 10, 2022 she became the very first statue of a Black woman inaugurated in Paris.

When Jennine Labuzan, an African American mom of 7, uncovered records showing that her great-grandfather held an interest in more than 1,300 acres in rural Mississippi, she began researching land patents and filed to protect what she believed was her family’s generational claim.

However, the current landowners argued that her great grandfather sold his interest in the property in the 1840s, and the federal court ruled against her claim.

As part of the litigation, the court ordered her to sign a quitclaim deed, which would relinquish any interest she claimed in the land.

Naturally, she refused to sign despite multiple court orders and so the judge found her in civil contempt and ordered the U.S. Marshals to take her into custody in an effort to compel compliance. She spent about 18 days in federal custody.

“I’ve never had more than a speeding ticket, let alone jail,” she said after spending two weeks in federal custody. “It was very disheartening, but God finally gave me peace, like this is a door you had to walk through.”

She was an indentured servant in Mary Pickersgill’s home, working alongside an enslaved Black woman whose name history never bothered to record. Together, they stitched their place into the foundation of this country.

Yet when the story got told, only one name made it to the history books. Only one woman got remembered. Only one got the credit.

“When we talk about maximizing the intelligence of Black children we are speaking not just in terms of their ability to go through school to get better reading and writing averages and go to the right college. We are concerned about enhancing their intelligence so that it can serve as a means for maintaining the actual physical survival of Black people. We are now at the crossroads. We are in a pathetic situation as far as the world is concerned. We are in a situation that is exceedingly dangerous, where we are questioning whether Afrikan people can survive the next century. And consequently, it’s going to take a different kind of style, a different systems of values, and a different approach to human relations to get us out of this quandary that we are in today; the quandary the European has put us in. And it’s going to require a different kind of education than what is available today.
