That's what happens on Eid day - you take your truck and make a majlis out of it for your whole family. You dress up the kids in fancy clothes and warn them to be on their best behavior. Then starts the journey of going and visiting their extended family, the younger cousins visiting the older ones and their parents. The kids will wait in line to get "Eidi" (an amount of money given as blessing). Oddly, these kids weren't too happy that day. Or perhaps I scared them going up to them head to toe wearing a black burqa (location was too conservative to wear anything else) I probably looked like a giant foreigner ninja. They sit around with their oversized backpacks and little "tiffin" baskets (lunch baskets) waiting for someone to pick them up from school. I remember once my mom picked me up really late from school and I couldn't stop crying as I saw the school ground empty, everyone got picked up except me. I thought something happened to her and no one was going to come get me.

When the school is done for the day, these AutoRickshaws come by the school to pick up the kids and drop them off to their nearby village settlements or huts. This is their school bus per se. Nearly 15 of them jam into this one auto and dance along the music the driver plays for them. "bye bye miss" , they stretch their hands out for a mini high-five. Home-time is the best time .."Bye Bye!" (at Koovathur)

At one of the Eureka Education Centers in Chennai. Kids come here after school to get lessons in English, Tamil, and Math through the funding of AID INDIA (the NGO I'm working with). A lot of kids here are from underprivileged families, some of them are from the slums where alcoholism amongst men is common. Despite all that that, these kids are the most diligent and respectful. While speaking to them, I learnt about their dreams to climb out of the life they were born to and become something that not only acts as a career but also help the greater community. I remember the first time I saw the beach by the Caribbean waters. Bright Turquoise straight out of the color wheel swatch. Never had I seen a water so blue before. This is the same feeling I had upon visiting the fields of south India. When your eyes meet a new color for the first time. Bright lime green glaring at you behind all the "regular green."
