Magical? No. 

It was mildly amusing at best.

Do people really care that much about appearing smart? 

Of course they do. There's this conception that the way to impress others is to show off talents, positive traits, or what people believe to be "cool". Appearing to be smart is one way to do that. Obviously, the person is sizing you up, thinking that the smarter they are the better they'll be in your book. Or they're trying to match up to you. Finding your intelligence intimidating. 

You can’t possibly be complaining about it, you wouldn’t be if you tried it.

I wouldn't be able to stand the smell to even attempt to take a bite.

No mortal is able to keep a secret. If his lips are silent, his fingertips will speak. The lie will show itself anyway

Why do people even bother to use words that they don’t know the definitions of?

Everyone wants to appear smarter than what they really are. Most of the time they don't expect you to know the true definition.
