For example, I think it's a huge missed opportunity that they didn't show Daemon's relationship with his daughters. Yes, they show Rhaena's deep trauma over not having a dragon and feeling like her father is disappointed in her. But that's it. We have no idea what Daemon actually feels about his daughters. What does he feel about Baela — a true dragonrider who chooses war and battle, turning down her grandfather's offer to inherit Driftmark?

Speaking of Corlys — his relationships with his granddaughters and grandsons are completely unclear. We're just supposed to believe that these people on screen, who seem like strangers to each other, actually feel something for one another.

8 episodes isn't a lot, sure. But honestly?

That's exactly what screenwriting is: making choices about where to invest your limited minutes to build characters, motivations, and relationships that feel real. You cut the filler, you cut back on the big flashy action scenes, and you focus on what makes the story matter — the people in it.

Plenty of shows with even fewer episodes manage to make you feel the weight of every connection. It's not about quantity of screentime; it's about using it wisely. The writers chose to spend time on other things, and that's a creative decision, not a necessity.

The show often mistakes confusion for complexity, throwing wave after wave of superficially written characters at the audience without giving them real depth. The showrunners clearly prioritised spectacle over character work.

Even in the first season, key emotional moments were skipped over — like Rhaenyra's reaction to Alicent's marriage. That's not a time issue; it's a priority issue. When a major battle scene feels hollow, it's because we don't care about the people in it — they're just pawns in a game we've barely been made to understand.
