How had he come to this point? Simon couldn't remember anymore. All he knew now was present situation, forced to stare at a single candle in a dark, windowless room. He wasn't even sure at what point the candle burned out and now what he was seeing was just in his mind. It flickered and danced, shifting only with his steady breathing. He sat cross-legged on the stone cold, stone floor, hunched over the dwindling flame before him. Minutes, hours, or simply moments passed without any indication.
He didn't move when the chamber door opened, barely aware of the figure standing over him now. But, he did flinch at the sudden clang of metal beside him as a bag was tossed on the ground. The sudden breeze blew out the candle, and Simon blinked back to the world around him, to the empty chamber, and the cold eyes standing over him.
"Return to your kingdom, to the Golden Fortress," the voice commanded, "Your king needs you, knight."
Simon raised his eyes to the man over him, slowly adjusting to the dark now that the light was gone. That was when the recognition started to set in. His master, the one he was meant to follow, the one who gave him this mission, the most important for the Red Kingdom. The success of his King's reign depended on it. And he wasn't going to let him down. He nodded to the man, shifting up to his knees as he bowed his head.
Diverting his eyes, he pulled the bag closer to see what he had been brought. It was armor, a Knight's armor. Even in the dark he could make out the gold decals, symbols of the Golden Kingdom. Muscle memory took over as he began to put the armor on, fitting perfectly into each piece like it was made for him. Once he was finished, he stood to his feet. The man before him held out a sword. Simon took it, sheathing it at his hip.
"Come," the man simply turned and started to walk, Simon following behind him. The hall they walked was empty, dark, lit only by the occasional torch on the wall, "You will work your way up in your ranks to Prince Callum. Insist yourself be at his side. Learn everything he has to hide, find weaknesses, and report them back here to me. Do you understand?"
"Yes, of course," Simon answered right away. The instructions were clear enough. The rest of the walk was silent until they reached the stables. The man went no further, a clear look of disgust on his face as he looked over the creatures. He was careful not to get close to anything that would get dirt on any part of his all black attire.
"The white one. Take it and be on your way. I expect to hear you arrived in a few days time."
Simon approached the horse, already saddled and packed with enough supplies for the trip. Everything was prepared for him already. The only thing left to do was to leave. He took a breath, focusing himself, before climbing up and directing his steed out into the evening air. The world around him, now out in the open, was far brighter than he remembered. A smile found its way onto his face as he rode, long forgetting the time spent in that dark room and the man watching over him. Now, he was free. Conditionally, but free still.
The Red Keep shrank behind him in no time, leaving only the open roads before him. Trees and mountains in the distance. Idly he wondered what it would be like to see the world, to travel on his own meeting all sorts of people. It was almost exciting, the aspect of true escape, flying off where no one could find him again.
Return to the Golden Fortress. Do not disappoint.
The voice in his head returned to take the smile from his face. He returned to a focused state of mind, his mission clear in his mind. He would not disappoint.
