you reluctantly entered into biology class; you just wanted to go home and sleep after having not being able to the whole night before. rain pattered a gentle rhythm against the windows, soothing your mind to sleep. today was no different in form to any other day in forks: shrouded by clouds, thick fog, and the smell of wet rain lifting from the tarmac. it was dark outside, inclining you even more to just dump your head onto the desk and let the sound of your teachers voice fade out. his dull voice dragged on, he was covering the topic of the circulatory system, and how blood flows through you. you struggled to keep your eyes open, taking very long blinks whilst you worked to stay conscious. just get through this, you hopelessly encouraged yourself. you only had… 45 minutes left of this battle in your mind between attempting to stay awake, attempting to pay attention or letting your brain soldier away and rest at ease. the way your teacher spoke: expressionless, no inflection his voice, felt like a torture method. you effortlessly scribbled notes down into your book, unphased by the illegible presentation you had facing in front of you.
in your peripheral vision, even though your eyes were fighting to close, you felt like someone had their attention directed to you. were you dragging attention to yourself? did your exhaustion really make you stand out among your peers at this moment in time? you began to think of different possibilities frantically. god, now another thing to worry about. probably stalking to make sure you don’t drop to sleep. discretely, you turned your head around to see whose eyes were burning into your back, and it sent a wave of nerves through your stagnant body. amber eyes met yours. your eyes managed to stay open slightly better now, out of curiosity. or fear.
his marble face stood out against everyone else in that room, he looked like he was carefully carved by the gods. he looked like a statue, created to perfection and formed with excellent precision. he was alluring, somebody you would accidentally stare at for too long.
nothing about his stare felt casual, it felt invasive, trying to decode something, he wasn’t even trying to hide it. why would someone as beautiful as him have his attention set on someone, like you, who basically blends in with everyone else, no where near as appealing to gawp at like people tended to with edward. yourself included. it didn’t help his eyes were intently watching you, as if he was expecting something. he clenched his sharp jaw, almost like a reflex, almost guilty that he had been caught, yet his eyes still felt intrusive.
confusion flooded your body and outweighed the fatigue. you quickly shoved your head around back towards the board, feeling awkward as you’d basically just had a staring contest, suddenly hyper-focused and extremely interested on what was going on in front of you. although you were technically free from his captivating gaze, you still felt trapped. you stopped breathing, almost like a survival instinct, like prey trying to hide from its predator. his eyes were piercing into your back. your mind panicked, struggling to come to a conclusion of why he would be staring at you. you rewinded back and tried to recall your previous encounters with edward cullen, most of them just sharp, casual conversation about homework. nothing major, he usually kept to himself and his siblings. you paused on a specific moment. perhaps you couldn’t class it as a moment, but more a figment of your imagination.
oh. now you remember why you barely slept.
the night previously, your mind never really shut off. it still wondered and fixated and stayed in a purgatory, between slumber and consciousness. your dreams felt more vivid than usual, it was peculiar.
you immediately recognised that same set of piercing, almost degrading eyes, which matched with the ones currently directed towards you. your slightly fractured memory of your dream began to slide together like pieces of a puzzle. everything felt clear now.
you were in your room, peaceful with your own company until you noticed the uninvited guest stood in the corner, shrouded by the shadows of the night, but the most prominent features highlighted by the moonlight. you were bewildered of course, and your heart beat quickened as he crept away from the seclusion of the corner of your bedroom.
his marble stature towered above your feeble body which sat on your bed, yourself convinced you were being greeted by an angel or some other beautiful creature. he knelt down to your level now, his face less blurred and clearer to depict in your memory. his onyx eyes carefully traced along the details of your face. your body eased, comforted by his gentle demeanour. he looked at you like you were the most important thing in the world, like he had to protect you at all costs and would allow you to be his burden. his thumb, frigid against your flushed cheek, grazed along its foundation. he moved along, finding your plush lips and caressing his thumb over them. he made you feel sacred, like he was worshiping your being.
you gazed at his features, forcing yourself to take your attention away from his intent eyes, and fixated onto his lips. cautiously, he held your jaw in his marble hand, as if he was afraid he would break you. he slowly leaned in towards you like you had some magnetic pull which lured him closer. his eyes were pleading now, desperate and longing. your body relaxed and awaited him, eager. gradually, he closed the gap between you both and pressed his lips to yours. he was very tender and still treated you like you were something precious, and which he could not afford to lose. you came even closer, pushing your proximity to the limit, and worked with the steady but gentle rhythm against his lips. you touched his cold neck and moved your hands higher into his soft, chestnut locks, like it was the only thing which supported you against him. your legs felt weak and your insides fluttered. your heart raced rapidly, your hands grasped tighter to him, afraid of his departure. you pulled away briefly, attempting to catch your breath, feeling slightly overwhelmed. he began to pepper kisses along your jaw, causing a gasp to leave your agape mouth. he moved lower, kissing compassionately along the column of your throat, making you breath even heavier.
“edward,” you murmured, with a hint of confusion but also pleasure. you enjoyed this too much, you began to wonder when the facade would be over. his breath ghosted over your cheek, making you shiver.
he kissed your cheek once more and then he hovered by your ear. you could hear him breathing, sounding intoxicated by the intimacy and proximity of it all. he whispered almost seductively into your ear,
you burst out of your cloud of imagination, suddenly remembering your surroundings.
“y/n, how about you answer this one?” your teacher lulled, appearing particularly unamused. your face went pink out of embarrassment, now everyone’s eyes were boring into you. you spat out some random answer, the first thing that came off the top of your head. he gave you a scolding, disappointed look and went on to explain the correct answer. “that is why we pay attention.”
what a humiliation ritual. you exhaled, relieved the horror was over, but you still felt alert. you peered behind you, to see edward, chuckling to himself. now, you were certainly awake.
