              ❝  whatever  the  hell  it  is  that  i  want  .  ❞  vera’s  fingers  hovered  over  the  spot  right  between  his  legs  ,  contemplating  for  a  moment  if  it  was  worth  the  tease  ,  but  vera’s  always  judged  quentin  to  be  the  living  opposite  of  the  maxim  ‘big  things  come  in  small  packages  .  ’  in  her  derisive,  prejudiced  mind,  he  was  a  big  thing  with  a  small  package  .  so  she  decided  against  the  teasing  a  second  later  ,  retracting  her  hand  just  enough  to  grab  the  arm  of  his  chair  and  spin  him  around  to  face  her  .  ❝  i  wanted  your  attention  ,  and  here  you  are  giving  me  exactly  that  .  so  i’d  say  being  a  menace  pays  off  .  you  should  try  it  some  time  .  might  actually  get  you  laid  .  ❞  she  was  well-aware  how  unnecessarily  maiming  her  words  were,  but  even  in  this  state  she  couldn’t  help  her  own  mouth  .  ❝  or  at  least  out  on  a  real  friday  night  than  rotting  in  this  god-forsaken  office.  jesus,  quentin,  we’ve  been  here  longer  than  i’ve  been  dead  !  are  you  not  learning  anything  from  this  at  all  ?    ❞  

              the  benevolent  thing  to  say  was  she  was  concerned  for  quentin’s  social  life  ,  but  vera  knew  her  agitation  came  from  her  own  selfish  needs  .  part  of  her  felt  like  she  was  wasting  time  doing  nothing,  and  a  larger  part  of  her  just  carried  the  pathological  need  to  have  fun  .  both  of  which  seemed  absurd  given  her  circumstance  ,  but  she  was  beginning  to  learn  she  was  nothing  if  not  unabashedly  herself  .  but  despite  her  self  -  assurance  ,  vera  hardly  had  any  idea  about  the  life  she  lived  or  the  kind  of  person  she  was  .  all  she  knew  was  that  her  name  was  vera  ,  and  it  appeared  that  she  was  unapologetically  sharp  -  tongued  ,  ill  -  willed  ,  and  short  -  tempered  .    most  days  she  blamed  her  wicked  ways  for  her  current  predicament  —  the  idea  that  not  even  hell  had  a  place  for  someone  as  despicable  as  her  ,  both  amusing  her  and  breaking  her  heart  at  the  same  time .  but  on  days  like  this  one  ,  she  blamed  quentin’s  presence  for  bringing  out  the  villain  in  her  ,  for  no  other  reason  than  her  finding  him  insanely  annoying  .    crossing  her  arms  to  her  chest  ,  vera  let  out  a  sigh  .  ❝  how  much  longer  are  we  staying  here  ?    ❞

               ❀｡               Ꮺ               quentin’s   breath   hitches   when   her   barely   translucent   hand   hovers   over   his   crotch   .    for   someone   who’s   supposed   to   be   unalive    ,    she   has   way   too   much   power   over   everything   .    both   to   the   things   and   the   living—    which   is   him   .    because   everyone   knows   that   if   there’s   someone   who   can   help   lost   souls   find   their   way   to   the   light    ,    it’s   not   quentin   .    it   should   be   kiyong   .    which   is   why    ,    he’s   so   dumbfounded   by   his   own   self   for   even   agreeing   to   help   her   out   .    so   why   did   he    ?    knowing   for   a   fact   that   he’s   someone   who’ll   pass   out   when   he’s   face   to   face   with   an   apparition   .    at   this   point    ,    he   feels   like   she   casted   some   sort   of   spell   on   him   to   make   him   obey   everything   she   wants   .      “    you   shouldn’t   be   saying   that   to   someone   who’s   only   trying   to   help   you   cross   the   other   side   .    my   sex   life   isn’t   your   concern   .    if   you’re   so   concerned   by   it    ,    maybe   set   me   up   with   someone   who’s   alive   .    ”      maybe   her   curiosity   about   his   intimate   relationships   has   a   connection   with   her   past   life    ?    quentin   really   hasn’t   connected   the   dots   yet   .    it’s   so   difficult   when   she   gives   him   nothing   but   hard   time   .      “    i   wouldn’t   leave   this   office   until   i’m   done   so   stop   bothering   me   .    it   might   make   my   work   faster   .    ”

              claire’s  eyes  shone  with  excitement  ,  partly  over  the  food  milo  brought  over  ,  but  mostly  for  the  amazing  things  happening  to  her  best  friend’s  career  .  with  the  rise  of  his  popularity  ,  a  lot  of  people  would  easily  claim  to  be  his  number  one  fan  ,  but  claire  beat  them  to  the  spot  two  decades  early  .  despite  the  constant  batter  and  endless  teasing,  she  has  always  believed  he  was  capable  of  doing  great  things  and  achieving  whatever  it  is  his  heart  desired  .  and  even  before  his  fame  ,  there  were  moments  she  caught  herself  looking  at  him  ,  and  her  heart  would  swell  with  such  pride  and  admiration  .  sometimes  it  hurt  to  breathe  just  looking  at  him  ,  really  .  but  claire  guessed  that  was  something  else  entirely.  anxiety.  fatigue.  an  unchecked  heart  condition.  sweet  death  finally  coming  for  her,  maybe.  she  would  have  showered  him  with  praise  and  buttered  him  up  with  compliments  like  she  knew  he  would  enjoy  immensely  ,  had  the  teasing  not  blundered  out  of  his  mouth  first  .  ❝  or  maybe  i  could  actually  find  a  date  to  take  home  and  we’d  have  a  little  fun  in  your  room  while  you’re  away  .  who  knows  ?  maybe  i’ll  hardly  miss  you  at  all  !    ❞    the  words  slipped  off  her  tongue  so  easily  that  it  could’ve  been  anything  but  a  lie  ,  but  if  claire’s  nervous  laughter  didn’t  give  the  bluff  away  ,  then  the  furious  burning  of  her  cheeks  would  have  .  she  could  hardly  imagine  holding  someone’s  hand  ,  much  less  spending  a  night  with  them  .  despite  having  spent  half  her  years  in  the  renowned  city  of  love  ,  what  ever  it  is  they  called  love  -  making  was  beyond  her  .    ❝  music  festival  ?  ❞  claire  lit  up  with  excitement,  and  her  wild  enthusiasm  to  go  with  him  would  have  burst  out  of  her  had  her  intrusive  thoughts  not  stopped  her  short  and  extinguished  the  flame  to  nothing  but  a  dull  ember  .    ❝  are  you  sure  it’s  me  you  want  to  go  with,  and  not  marriage  proposal  number  seven  from  last  week  ?  ❞

              at  milo’s  agreement  ,  she  was  surprised  to  find  herself  feeling  disappointed  .  it  was  confusing  ,  to  say  the  least  ,  that  she  felt  that  way  ,  and  claire  wished  she  knew  exactly  why  she  felt  disappointed  .  her  best  friend  was  only  being  supportive  .  she  should  be  thankful  for  his  bolstering  .  trying  not  to  let  her  displeasure  show  ,  she  took  a  bite  of  the  food  to  make  herself  feel  better  .  ❝  that’s  impossibly  high  standards  for  casual  dating  you  have  there  ,  mr.  love  guru  .  i  mean  ,  i’m  looking  for  a  distraction  ,  not  a  husband  .  aren’t  distractions  supposed  to  be  ,  at  most  ,  attractive  ,  entertaining  ,  and  easily  -  available  ?  ❞  despite  her  inexperience  and  naivety  ,  the  criteria  milo  set  seemed  far  too  good  to  be  true  ,  like  something  out  of  the  books  she’s  read  in  her  youth  .  ❝  but  hey,  what  do  i  know  ?  you’re  the  one  who  gives  love  advice  here  .  ❞  she  paused,  a  sudden  curiosity  blooming  in  her  thoughts  .  with  hesitation  heavy  on  her  tongue  ,    she  was  quiet  for  a  moment  ,  thinking  carefully  how  to  tread  the  subject  without  making  it  weird  .    ❝  is  that  —    ❞  why  was  her  heart  thrashing  ?    ❝  is  that  what  you  look  for  in  —  in  dates  ?  ❞  oh  god,  i  made  it  weird  .  she  felt  her  head  spinning  and  the  bile  rising  to  her  throat  as  soon  as  the  words  were  out  and  she  couldn’t  even  stop  the  next  words  from  tumbling  out  of  her  mouth  .  ❝  no  wonder  you’re  still  single  !  ❞  

               ❀｡               Ꮺ               while   milo   is   truly   excited   for   his   career   suddenly   blooming   beautifully   for   him    ,     with   all   opportunities   literally   laid   out   on   the   table   for   him   to   take    ,    just   one   words   from   claire’s   teasing   could   end   it   all   .    suddenly    ,    he   feels   sick   to   his   stomach   .    just   imagining   the   fact   that   he’ll   be   away   for   the   weekend   and   with   claire   bringing   someone   over   over   to   his   house    ,    makes   him   lose   his   appetite   .    is   it   worth   it   to   screw   up   his   stomach   over    ?    probably   .    but   his   career    ?    not   at   all   .    but   the   energy   he’s   supposed   to   have   on   that   event   will   no   doubt    ,    unmatch   his   energy   on   his   show   due   to   the   fact   that   his   thoughts   will   be   here   instead   of   there   .    while   there’s   excitement   in   her   tone    ,    milo   is   visibly   upset   .    at   least   for   him   .    he’s   pretty   sure   claire   will   hardly   notice   the   corner   of   his   lip   that’s   curled   down   into   a   half   frown    ,    or   that   he’s   just   playing   and   barely   touching   his   food   at   this   point   when   he   mentioned   an   hour   before   that   he   was   starving   .    yet   who   is   he   to   feel   this   kind   of   emotion    ?    they’re   not   dating   .    they’re   best   friends   .    claire   can   see   someone   else   whoever   and   whenever   she   likes   .    it’s   not   like   milo   can   stop   her   anyway   .    he   needs   to   stop   being   a   coward   .      “    well    ,    ”      he   takes   a   deep   breath   as   he   collects   himself    ,    popping   the   meat   and   rice   into   his   mouth   as   he   chews   and   swallows   them   slowly   .      “    try   not   to   make   such   a   huge   mess   while   i’m   gone   and   please    ,    just   do   takeouts   and   try   not   to   burn   down   my   house    ?    ”      he   half   begs   her    ,    hoping   to   drop   the   stupid   date   topic   he   carelessly   brought   up   .    milo   looks   up   to   meet   her   gaze   and   forces   up   a   smile   along   his   lips   .      “    i’m   sure   it’s   you   who   i   want   to   go   with   .    i   don’t   think   i   would’ve   enjoyed   it   with   somebody   else’s   company   .    besides    ,    i   really   need   to   get   rid   of   them   .    i   already   said   i’m   not   interested   but   they   still   keep   hanging   around   like   flies   .    ”

‘well, we can get both then. you get your fries and i will go with a salt popcorn, sounds like heaven!’ she chuckled and stretched her arms before slipping the tickets in her pockets to not worry about them later. ‘mh, the whole package it is! we shall see where the evening’s going to carry us and adapt as we feel for it. the perfect evening no matter which road it takes!’ reo was more than happy to be all spontaneous., it was more fun if there was less pressure to follow a tight schedule.

‘you only ever invite me to lunch when you want something so spill it. what’s up?’

                  ━━        it  was  impressive  where  the  two  of  them  had  gotten  from  the  life  they  had  before   ,   and  sun  was  pretty  sure  it  was  all  thanks  to  moon’s  efforts   .   he  just  wanted  to  stay  by  his  friend’s  side   .     “    i  mean   ,   if  we’re  honest  i  would  have  probably  just  been  following  you  around  still  but  with  a  shitty  job   .   you  and  me  go  hand  in  hand  though   ,   right   ?   we’re  stuck  together  but  at  least  we’ve  got  something  so  good  going  for  us  on  top  of  that   .    ”

                   ━━      unfortunately   ,   she  couldn’t  hide  the  hint  of  disappointment  on  her  face   .   she  told  herself  she’d  wait  for  him  always  but  it  was  hard  to  deny  that  it  took  a  toll  on  her  sometimes   .   she  had  her  own  needs  and  the  biggest  one  was  being  able  to  share  her  moments  with  someone  she  loved   .      “    is  there  not  something  else  we  can  do  in  the  mean  time   ?   or  do  i  just  have  to   …   accept  it  like  this   ?    ”      she  tries  her  best  to  hold  back  the  tears  that  begin  stinging  her  eyes   ,   not  wanting  to  make  him  feel  any  worse  even  in  this  moment   .

     “ right, no mercy and all that, i get it. i’m not complaining though ‘cause you scold so cutely, ” he snickers but it was anything but a lie. “ i don’t think i can sleep now that you’re here. ” not that it’s a bad thing, maybe zara’s presence alone is enough to give them good energy, as cheesy as that sounds. “ i’ll wrap myself in a blanket and watch some murder mystery movies in the living room, maybe that’ll make me feel better, ” blue says half - jokingly as they grab a glass of water with them. “ call out for me if you need anything. ”

                           “   this   is   my   safe   space   ,   do   you   understand   that   ?   i   don’t   know   how   you   got   the   idea   that   my   brother   could   have   any   authority   over   that   ,   but   i   certainly   don’t   have   a   problem   kicking   the   both   of   you   out   .   ”

                              despite  being  an  overnight  expert  in  practically  everything  she’s  done  in  life ,  vera  hasn’t  really  gotten  this  whole  ghost  thing  down  even  if  it  felt  like  she’s  been  this  way  for  an  eternity .  she  wasn’t  even  sure  exactly  how  long  she’s  been  in  this  state .  but  one  thing  was  for  certain  —  she  was  starting  to  lose  her  patience .  and  it  didn’t  help  that  the  only  person  who  has  kept  her  company  recently  was  purposefully  ignoring  her .  or  so  she  believed .  in  most  of  their  time  together ,  quentin  has  always  seen  her  right  as  she  materialized  around  his  presence .  but  it  seemed  today  was  different ,  as  she’s  been  walking  around  this  particularly  uninteresting  office  for  what  seemed  like  hours  and  her  presence  has  gone  unnoticed .  or  if  her  companion  has  noticed ,  he’s  made  no  effort  to  acknowledge  her .  vera  didn’t  care  which  one  was  true .  all  she  knew  was  she  wanted  attention ,  and  that  was  exactly  what  she  was  going  to  get .

                              with  a  devilish  smirk  playing  along  her  lips ,  vera  stalked  towards  the  empty  spot  beside  quentin’s  and  let  her  ghostly  fingers  glide  across  the  smooth  table ,  before  stopping  just  to  flick  a  pen  off  the  surface ,  then  moved  to  another  deserted  table  within  his  line  of  sight  to  knock  over  a  pen  holder ,  flip  a  notebook  open ,  and  spin  the  swivel  chair  around .  that  was  sure  to  get  his  attention .  but  vera  was  hardly  contented .  so  she  came  back  around  to  where  he  sat ,  and  ran  a  gentle  hand  through  his  hair  before  letting  a  single  slender  finger  trace  the  side  of  his  face ,  following  the  curve  of  his  ear  down  to  the  crook  of  his  neck .  ❝  if  you  keep  ignoring  me ,  i’m  going  to  touch  you  in  places  you  won’t  be  able  to  ignore ,  ❞  she  whispered ,  leaning  very  close  to  his  ear ;  her  hand  drifting  lower  down  his  body  to  brush  his  leg  teasingly .    

               ❀｡               Ꮺ               if   it   weren’t   for   vera’s   constant   need   of   attention   coming   from   quentin    ,    he   wouldn’t   had   to   spend   overtime   in   their   office   .    around   this   time    ,    he’ll   probably   be   lounging   on   his   bed    ,    binge   -   watching   shows   he   missed   during   the   days   he   and   his   partner   went   out   for   ghost   hunting   .    with   vera   around   more   everywhere   he   goes    ,    it’s   harder   for   him   to   concentrate   on   anything   .    which   is   why   the   normal   eight   hours   of   work   tend   to   extend   up   until   midnight   .    while   he’s   mostly   known   as   the   coward   who   believes   on   the   supernatural   on   their   ghostly   adventures    ,    he   does   video   editing   aside   from   that   .    quentin   is   very   skilled   on   this   field   and   he   makes   sure   that   his   works   are   perfect   up   to   every   single   detail   in   it   .    that   being   the   case    ,    he   makes   it   his   mission   to   ignore   vera   the   whole   day   .    reasons   became   even   more   valid   when   she   started   acting   up   this   morning   .    as   much   as   he   tries   to   be   helpful   towards   her    ,    finding   answers   for   her   unfinished   business    ,    there   are   simply   times   wherein   he   needs   a   pause   from   all   of   it   .

               at  the  mention  of  dropping  out ,  claire  felt  a  giant  boulder  plunge  down  her  gut ,  and  all  she  could  do  to  keep  from  completely  disintegrating  was  to  clench  her  fists  and  let  out  a  nervous  chuckle .  the  remark  didn’t  help  her  sanity  at  all .  she  wanted  nothing  more  than  to  smack  him  right  this  very  moment .  or  maybe  fall  apart  in   his  arms  and  tell  him  she  just  wanted  out  of  this  whole  thing .  but  then ,  the  second  option  didn’t  help  her  sanity  either .  so  she  resorted  to  taking  a  deep  breath  instead  to  snuff  out  the  sudden  wildfire  in  her  chest .  ❝ fine ,  fine ,  ❞  she  agreed  with  disdain ,  remembering  the  clear  green   bottles  of  liquor  stacked  in  the  fridge  .  if  there  was  anything  she  needed  tonight  ( apart  from  hitting  milo  and / or  diving  into  his  arms  for  refuge  ) ,  it’s  to  get  hammered ,  and  just  forget  how  to  feel  for  at  least  a  few  hours .  ❝ i’m  sorry  for  desecrating  our  precious  friday  night  with  my obsessive  need  to  pass  this  class , ❞  she  said  as  she  took  her  seat  and  topped  his  bowl  of  rice  with  kimchi .  ❝ you  have  my  full  attention  now ,  my  dear  sweet  milo .  wanna  tell  me  about  your  week ? ❞  claire  straightened  herself  up ,  shaking  off  the  hood  from  her  head  and  fixing  her  hair ,  and  set  her  gaze  onto  him ,  fully  intent  on  listening  to  what  he  had  to  say .  oftentimes ,  she  wondered  why ,  despite  the  hordes  and  hordes  of  women  throwing  themselves  at  him ,  milo  seemed  determined  to  stay  single .  any  girl  would  be  lucky  to  have  someone  as  warm  and  safe  and  kind  as  he  was .  that  was  certainly  how  she  felt  —  lucky .  but  most  days  it  felt  like  a  crime  to  have  been  the  object  of  his  warmth  all  this  time ,  despite  being  nothing  more  than  his  best  friend .  and  some  days  she  even  questioned  if  she  was  holding  him  back  from  deeper  connections  with  others  just  by  being  here . 

                she’s  about  to  bite  into  his  teasing  and  argue back ,  but  stops  herself  short  at  the  thought of  dating . ❝ huh ,  now  that’s  an  idea .  you  think  so ? ❞  a  thoughtful  look  passed  over  her features .  her  disposition  on  dating  constantly  fluctuated  between  expecting   romance  and  the  lightheaded  feeling  of  being  in  love  she’s  read  in  books ,  and  expecting  the  outright  desolation  of  betrayal  and  abandonment  like  she  imagined  her  own  mother  experienced .  dating ,  claire  believed ,  always  involved  feeling  the  extremes .  and  she  would  rather  not  experience  the  highs  at  all ,  if  it  meant  she won’t  get  sucker  punched  with  another  devastating  low .   but  milo’s  words  have  stirred  something  in  her .  maybe  dating  didn’t  have  to  involve  feelings  at  all .  maybe ,  if  she  found  just  another  thing  to  distract  her ,  then  getting  through  this  degree  would  be  more  bearable  and  the  need  to  throw  herself  into  oncoming  traffic  would  be  lesser . ❝ do  you  really  think  it’s  a  good  idea  for  me  to  date ?  just  for  distraction ?  ❞  and  maybe  then ,   she’d  feel  less  like  she’s  holding  him  back  from  finding  love  and  being  happy .

               ❀｡               Ꮺ               sometimes    ,    no   matter   how   much   you   claim   to   know   someone    ,    you   can’t   always   tell   what’s   going   on   inside   their   head   .    milo   knows   for   one    ,    that   claire   has   no   interest   in   law   .    the   reason   why   she   took   it    ?    he   has   no   idea   why   and   he   doesn’t   want   to   ask   her   to   unless   she   tells   him   herself   as   he   doesn’t   want   to   cross   her   boundaries   .    most   of   the   time    ,    he   finds   himself   walking   on   eggshells   whenever   the   topic   is   about   her   studies   and   music    ,    which   is   why   they   try—    or   at   least    ,    he   does    ,    not   to   talk   about   it   on   their   friday   night   .    yet   tonight    ,    he   couldn’t   hold   back   his   tongue   .    if   ian   is   here   with   them    ,    he   would’ve   smacked   milo   already   for   talking   so   much   and   joking   about   things   so   easily   .    sadly    ,    he’s   not    ,    and   his   mouth   runs   freely   without   a   thought   .    however    ,    he   decides   to   stop   when   she   finally   gives   in   .    perhaps   he   should’ve   gone   easy   on   her   with   his   teasing   .    it   was   so   much   easier   when   they   were   all   younger   .    no   one   got   hurt   with   careless   words   like   the   ones   they   spew   as   an   adult   now   .    after   everything   that   happened    ,    he   couldn’t   blame   that   his   best   friend   changed   .      “    well    ,    thank   you   so   much   for   finally   giving   me   your   full   attention   .    ”      he   starts   as   he   lays   out   the   food   and   side   dishes   on   the   bench   before   them   .      “    thanks   for   asking   me    ,    my   sweet   darling    ,    claire   .    i   have   some   really   good   news   .    they   invited   me   to   host   an   event   out   of   town   so   i   might   not   be   around   for   the   next   few   weeks    ,    i   know   how   much   you’ll   miss   me   when   i’m   gone   .    and   second    ,    they   gave   me   free   vip   tickets   for   the   music   festival   next   month   featuring   rising   and   famous   western   artists   .    ”      while   this   is   milo’s   chance   to   ask   anybody   out   on   a   date   and   to   attend   the   music   festival   with   him    ,    he   instead    ,    thinks   and   prioritizes   claire   .      “    do   you   want   to   come   with   me    ?    ”      the   question   comes   so   casually   he   hopes   he   look   like   he   wasn’t   about   to   throw   up   .
