oh, mike wheeler definitely has villain / “bad guy” / serial killer subtext—even if not in a traditional, extreme, literal or “aware” sense.
in fact i even predict mike to catch obsessive stalker accusations in s5, both in-universe and from the audience lmfao. the ST stalker symbolism goes crazy.
and we do know his love for Will definitely borders on obsessive. he’s constantly on the lookout for will & very suspicious/possessive/jealous too, that might lead to some uncomfortable situations next season.

I was talking to my mom about the finale, and she said to me "I can't believe they sent Will to Milwaukee in the Dahmer era". And so I had to go back and rewatch Mike's epilogue for Will myself.
Sure enough:
Vallaki, with the same syllable stresses as Milwaukee. I can see why the two sounded interchangeable to someone who doesn't know anything about DnD.
However, I looked a little closer at the scenery in the bar:
That's 100% the Pabst logo.
From what I can tell, they fucking sent Will Byers to Milwaukee circa 1990-1991, when Jeffrey Dahmer was most active.
And on top of this (which is news to me, because I'm not a true crime girlie):

Stranger Things Finale and Byler
None of us are wrong. The Duffer Brothers, Shawn Levy, Netflix are wrong. This was the most elaborate queerbait in media history. The responsibility is on them. Don't ever forget that.
All the evidence is that Mike is not straight, has feelings for Will, and is grieving over the loss of his first love.
And El's imagined happy ending did not include a romantic future with Mike.
BYLER IS REAL.
They stoked in us a hope and fire that will not burn out. The subtext was ABSOLUTELY planted and is there. They just didn't deliver. No network corporate execs have the right or the ABILITY to quell our fire to want want to be human and free.
They absolutely knew we exist and who we are when they played David Bowie's "Heroes" during the credits. They gave a nod to heroism, but weren't heroic themselves. What some corporate suits and the Duffer Brothers do does not dictate what WE do.
EDIT: The fact that Will's coming-out journey played NO role in the finale is bad writing. I said it. Like wtf.
EDIT 2: After seeing comments, I rewatched Mike putting his D&D book next to Will's. Mike shows the most emotion he has all season, looking at Will's book which takes up half the frame, and breaks down when placing his own book next to it. It was a nod to Byler. The Duffers never ruled out Byler; Will's painting is on his wall. It was cowardly, but the writers made Byler live on in subtext.
If Byler were canon, it would have been a fictional story after all. What would have mattered is what we did with it after. And for us, BYLER WILL ALWAYS BE REAL.

I think the most blatant and inexcusable example of queerbaiting was keeping Mike and El from kissing or confirming their relationship all season. Because even after all the shit the writers pulled in season 4 (and earlier), they could have used season 5 to show us that Mike actually does love El and they're happy together now and communicating and have a supportive relationship for once so their ending could have been genuinely moving. But instead, they sacrificed the emotional impact of their finale climax to keep queer fans watching the show because if Mike and El kissed and actually acted like a couple, it would have been obvious Byler wasn't happening and they would have lost viewers. There is NO explanation for making the couple whose big scene takes place during the climax WORSE except for queerbaiting. I do not believe that the entire team of writers is actually that incompetent.
With the crazy amount of back editing they've been doing, what are the chances of them uploading a whole new finale without saying anything just like they did all the other changes?

We never get to see what Vecna showed Will.
We never get to see the painting conversation between Mike and Will.
We never get to see the full party together again.
We will never get a beautiful queer relationship with accurate and wonderful representation in mainstream media.
If it was never true then why play into it? Why not change course before the end or at least ice out what was heating up? Why do all this elaborate shit that never has any ties to anything and ends up being there just because? Even if scenes or lines got cut, what was left could have still been cohesive. It could've still been something. And seeing there's nothing now makes me wonder if there was anything at all.

I don't even want a fix it fic, I want literal hellfire of consequences for people who do this shit to their audiences. They teased a fucking avalanche of snowballs and then literally left us out to dry because there wasn't even any fucking snow. I don't want to see anyone talking about how it's not queerbating, that's insane. It's weird AF to center a queer character who is getting advice from another queer character about whether or not someone could want to date them and then it all turns to dust. I hope their fucking careers turn to dust.
They really had Will give a love confession as El to save Mike and El's relationship. Framed it as a moment of growth.

“Byler wasn’t queerbait” mfs when I pull up receipts
This is what bothers me most about byler not being canon. Netflix was feeding into it and encouraging speculation. Plus, the parallels to other shows/movies they used in the show for Mike and Will were of couples. Every little detail in the show is a reference to something else, so why wouldn’t we take the Mike/Will parallels at face value?
in hindsight i'm not questioning anymore why two thirds of the acting performances this season feel half hearted and flat. the script was butchering all of their characters i wouldn't give a fuck anymore either
I really don't understand how "without getting kudos or comments a fanfiction author is going to assume that people who clicked their fic didn't like it" became a controversial take.
I don't know why some people think an author should imagine, or guess that people who click their fic enjoyed it it when nobody is telling them that.
If you're re-reading a fic constantly, or leaving it up in your tab so that it re-loads every day for a hundred days the author is not going to know that unless you tell them. They'd love to hear it. It would make their day.
And if you don't tell them you liked their fic, there's no reason for them to assume you did.
I once discontinued a fic because it was getting a few hits but hardly any kudos and no comments. This went on for several updates until I got so discouraged that I discontinued the fic and shelved it.
Only to have like a dozen people chime in telling me how disappointed they were and asking me why I stopped.
Because you didn't tell me you were enjoying it and I am not a mind-reader. I felt like I was shouting into the void. And by the time they told me, I had lost all enthusiasm for the fic.
