So sad that if you donât know your rights they will abuse their power, fucking disgraceful
JOHNNY STORM IS OFFICIALLY BI/PAN/POLY
Marjorie Liu, who wrote Johnny briefly during his appearance in Daken: Dark Wolverine #4, confirmed on twitter very recently that Johnny and Daken had a sexual relationship.Â
Johnnyâs bi/pan/polysexuality is canon now, although, probably because of the Fantastic Fourâs current lack of popularity, not one sound was made about it in the media or in the Marvel fandom.
Itâs not as if thereâs nothing in canon itself to back up Liuâs statement. In 2005â˛s Spectacular Spider-Man #21, Johnny openly admits to having slept with at least one nonbinary alien:Â
In Fantastic Four #563, we even find out that thereâs an alternate universe version of Johnny â in which heâs the older of the Storm siblings â where he is the one who is married to Reed Richards, not Sue:
In The New Mutants: Superheroes and the Radical Imagination of American Comics, comics scholar Ramzi Fawaz traces Johnnyâs history as a queer figure all the way back to his initial appearance Fantastic Four #1, so Johnny is not only currently queer, he has always implicitly been written that way.
Sometimes the hints were subtle, like in his Fantastic Four #309 trip to Fire Island, which was, at the time it was published, a notorious gay vacation spot.
And sometimes the hints were more overt:
Maybe itâs just me, but I think that the fact that Johnny Storm, part of Marvelâs First Family and one of the founding members of the Fantastic Four, the team that is responsible for making the Marvel universe what it is today and which was once Marvelâs most popular and influential property, is officially bi/pan/poly IS A BIG DEAL.Â
JOHNNY STORM, FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE FANTASTIC FOUR AND MARVELâS FIRST FAMILY, IS OFFICIALLY BI/PAN/POLY. ITâS IMPORTANT.

New Avengers #6 -Â âHappy Ever Afterâ (2016)
written by Al Ewing art by Gerardo Sandoval, Dono Sanchez Almara, Phil Noto, Mark Bagley, & Scott Hanna,
Simon: Did you know?
Emily: I knew you had a secret. But when you were little you were so carefree. But these last few years more and more itâs almost like I can feel you holding your breath. I wanted to ask you about it, but I didnât want to pry. Maybe I made a mistake.
Simon: No. No mom, you didnât make a mistake.
Emily: Being gay is your thing. There are parts of it you have to go through alone. I hate that. As soon as you came out you said, âMom, Iâm still me.â I need you to hear this: You are still you, Simon. You are still the same son who I love to tease and who your father depends on for just about everything. And your the same brother who always compliments his sister on her food, even when it sucks. You get to exhale now, Simon. You get to be more you than you have been in, in a very long time. You deserve everything you want.
Moving forward
I remember how scared I used to be, 21 years old and coming out to people for the first time, wondering if Iâd ever find my place in the world. I particularly remember feeling so stuck - amongst straight people, amongst straight couples and their relationship highs and lows, moving from wedding to wedding basically without much hope in my heart.
And yet somehow over the years time has changed everything. My home country launched a plebiscite which saw the majority vote in favour of gay marriage and 18 months ago it became legal. Sydney, the city known colloquially as âthe one with all the Asians and gaysâ became even more liberal with its celebrations of love in all shapes and forms. Yet I was still nervous in certain parts of town to show any side of me that could be deemed as being âtoo gayâ.
I then discovered ACON, and what a blessing that was! Hordes of people just like me, a young gay Asian professional with a keen interest in activism, some of whom have now become my closest friends - what more could I ask for?
But the move to Canada has opened my eyes as to what a city should be like. From my point of view, whilst Sydney is âgay-acceptingâ, Toronto is definitely deserving of the term âgay-friendlyâ. My workplace has anti-discrimination posters everywhere, my older male boss didnât bat an eyelid when I referred to my male partner, and people of all genders and sexualities walk around the city holding hands, free of judgement.
The best part now though is what I see in the new friends Iâve made - almost all the gay friends I have here are in loving, long-term committed relationships and basically donât have to tiptoe around anyone in their community (aside from parents in some cases- but I feel like thatâs unavoidable with Asians) and the ones that are single are probably so because theyâre still in their early 20s.
Visiting an old Tumblr friend @migo-holic this weekend in Philadelphia, seeing his great new life, meeting his husband (heâs the first of my gay friends to have married) and two dogs seems to have driven it home - regardless of sexuality, itâs possible to live life as normally as you want, without having to apologise for anything.
I know Iâve only mentioned very liberal, open-minded places but itâs fascinating to see the nuances that differ between societies that can shift oneâs mindset about how comfortable they are about showing themselves. I canât say that I know many examples of long-term gay couples in Sydney and thus the vision of a family unit has never really felt âavailableâ - but after seeing all these people around me, you know what? I can now say that Iâm proud to be a gay man of colour, and as mundane as it may seem to some, I deserve to have the family life I want.
You deserve all the good things coming your way, Lawrence; normal, routine, loving family life and all. I'm so honored to call you a friend, and our Philly home is always open if you want another cheesesteak or a picture with Rocky đâ¤
