Solo

A US court just recently ruled that employers can now discriminate against dreadlocks. This gave me the desire to read more about the discrimination people of color face in the workplace. POC hair is usually seen as ‘unprofessional’ and generally not suitable for the work place. We’re told we have to straighten our hair in order for it to look presentable. For my final project, I wanted to photograph the various different hair styles that POC have. I used four of my friends as models because I know they take special pride in taking care of their hair. They feel like it’s an extended part of their personality, and I’m glad I got the opportunity to photograph them

The last image is a victory jump after completing her run.

Raven is into music, so I told her to pretend like she was listening to her favorite song. I wanted to capture how music really makes her feel. I used black and white because I didn’t want colors to be distracting.
